Just a reminder. "Turn of the century" now means the year 2001. If you're referring to 1901 use the term "Turn of the last century."
Nah, it still works. This century is pre millennial and post millennial.
@@driller7714 You make no sense. The 21st Century began on January 1st, 2001.
@@seanmiller7187 The new millennia began on January 1st 2000.
So did the 21st century.
2001 began on January 1st 2001.
@@driller7714 So you literally don't understand how math works?
@@seanmiller7187 Apparently you do not. 2001 ehh?
If the title doesn’t contain Rolex, is the video even worth uploading? 🤔
Rolex is the only watch brand
@@wertj3977I'm sick of it too, but as far as TH-cam's algorithm goes, yeah it probably is.
Rolex represents success, but there are watches that is worth more and is better quality
Sadly the r word is needed to get the necessary view quantity
R = tacky
I can’t wait until top hats and pocket watches come back into fashion 😊
I feel like you’re gonna be waiting for a while lol
Walking canes and pimp coats
The problem is that the majority of the type of people waiting for that style to come back would definitely not look good wearing it.
That watch was so lovely my monocle popped out! 🧐😲
This was one of my favorite videos. My wife has an Omega gold pocket watch that she wanted for her sewing room.
I have my great grandfather's gold Illinois pocket watch that I wear from time to time. I like the way a pocket watch forces one to slow down for a moment and pause during a busy day.
It's interesting that, when modern manufacturers go to great lengths to seal a watch, most pocket watch backs can be snapped open to admire (and show off) the beautifully finished movements inside.
I was considering a Patek pocket watch a few years ago. Same as the one in the video. Will check them out again.
Picked up a mint full minute repeater pocket watch with historical significance a few months ago. It's incredible... I'd never be able to buy one without it. I'm gonna add a clear dial and expose the mechanism. 😊
Lovely watches, even lovelier movements. Thanks for putting this up.
Great content. Thank you for sharing new expansive routes of the rabbit hole. For me heut horology is more than any trends. It's about the mechanisms, innovative ideas of an era, appreciation of the attention to detail, and inventive ways of accessing mesmerising works of art with the enjoyment of finding ways to add minute repeaters, quarter repeaters, enamelled dials, or historic masterpieces, without having to bore any holes in Hatton Gardens' walls to afford them.
Decided to switch from wrist to pocket watches. Aim to build collection of top tier brands - bang for buck pocket watches are the best route and wearing one is so much nicer with added benefit that no one knows what you have until you pull it out of the pocket
Really interesting! Quite tempting and there are plenty of good pocket watches much cheaper than this. A renaissance?
Great History lesson. Beautiful pieces.!
Now there's an interesting watch video!
9:40 That gong was so rich that I thought something was ringing in my home 😅
One thing more. For the most part pocket watches are as likely to be worn as the high end Rolexes, which are too tempting to theives to wear in public.
All very interesting. Love pocket watches. Aim to have one in my collection in the next couple of years. I’ll have to run it past the minister of finance.
Great show.
Damn, all this over a company that doesn’t and haven’t make a damn thing but markets only it’s name sake. Oh and buying up your suppliers doesn’t cut it either.
Another advantage of a pocket watch is that you don't need to whip out the magnifying glass to appreciate the finishing on the movement.
Instant minute change on the Longines 😳
Very interesting video, thanks
After initially dismissing the pocket watch idea at the start, I’m a convert to the notion. Something truly different unique can be had with these horological masterpieces for a reasonable amount of coin. I’m somewhat tired of the sea of Rolex on peoples wrists to the point of them being almost gaudy.
Lovely examples until the last. The Audemar Freres is a decent watch but it's a plunge repeater and these are second rate. You can get a first class slide repeater for about the same money made by Louis Audemars (who made a lot of watches for Patek Philippe), Marius LeCoultre, C H Meylan or Henry Capt. For that matter you can get a nice AP minute repeater for less than a steel Rolex Submariner.
Not a huge fan of pocket watches, for me, one is enough. It USED to be my daily 'wear' watch while working in the funeral industry. Personally I believe that for an occasion such as a funeral, a pocket watch is FAR more appropriate, dignified and classy than even a good dress watch or even worse....Looking at your phone! The movement of that Patek that you showed at the start of the vid reminded me very much of the A Lange & Sohne movement of a Vintage Luftwaffe B-Uhr, a watch which carries incredible history (Probably), and can be obtained in fairly good condition for less than the price of a Rolex Sub in stainless steel too! I KNOW that many people would see the 'political' link with that sort of watch and immediately cross it off their buying list, but certainly NOT me!! At some point in the future when I have £8K spare, I'm 100% in the market for one!
Pocket watches are some of my favorites
Great Video
you've watched a 11min long video in 3 minutes?
Oh there are MANY amazing watches for the price of a sub... or much less.... the issue with beautiful elegant gold watches for example, is how fragile they can be. The great thing about Rolex and other modern sport watches, is how durable they are. But you certainly don't need a Rolex, and to spend Rolex money, to do a very similar job
So many good value watches from Oris...
I like the idea of a pocket watch, especially a minute repeater
love pocket watches. A couple of years ago I inherited my great grandfather’s 1871 solid gold Elgin. Spectacular.
Just bought a Timex Easy Reader day date. The best watch decision ever. It's 35mm and fits just like a Patek. You either buy a Timex, or you buy a Rolex.
Do you wear a pocket watch or carry one?
"A good amount of it" is indeed preferable to a few grams but I have to say that the prices of watches made from precious metals are a total rip off, particularly in platinum. Platinum is less than £750 an ounce today, less than half the price of gold. However we've been getting conned for years into thinking that Platinum is rarer & more valuable than gold. It may be more difficult to work with but when a Platinum wedding band is priced at 40% higher than the gold equivalent, you know it's a rouse. Watches in Platinum are nothing but a con with gold not too far behind them.
I’d buy them all
i own the V and C Pocket Watch, It was my Dads Dads... I think they dropped the And around 1928 ?
At first glance I thought the VC was a Breguet.
They’re about as large as most modern wrist watch to begin with
people in datejusts stitting here like 👀
As you said it's a museum piece. I am absolutely delighted that such amazing pocket watches exist, but let's be honest no one would ever wear one. To keep this locked up at home to gloat over once a month is wrong. Put it in a museum so that we can all appreciate it and protect it for the future. Incidentally Andrew's books are actually rather good. Just read Vessel - excellent.
Omega........
So much so that the only watch you really crave is a Rolex, Andrew! 😂
In addition, given today's conditions, it is perhaps smarter not to wear a watch (or a swatch) on your wrist and to have the good one in your pocket ;) Very nice pieces, thank you !
If you live somewhere that dangerous you shouldn’t be buying expensive watches. You should be saving up so you can move.
I predict pocket watches will make a comeback
They won’t
I hate rolex at this point
I wear a lot of joggy B’s so if I was to have a pocket watch it wouldn’t be long before it slipped out of my pocket and shattered into loads of pieces… I’ll pass thanks!
Everyone complaining about the clickbaity title after clicking the clickbaity title
Yes, stop the "rolex" titles bait like people that really know watches even care. Is not a benchmark for people that know some about watches! Don't ruin even more your video playlist
There are no pocket watches for sale on Watchfinder. What gives?
Stop writing Rolex in every title, nobody cares about them, and it doesn’t serve as a clickbait.
👍🏽
The rolex click bait is getting old guys. Love the channel, but c'mon.
Ahhhhh. Click bait. I love watches, but unless I wear a suit every day, the time keeper in my pocket will be my phone. Pocket watches are too outdated for my jeans.
Earlier today I tried to name all of the watch brands I know but all I could come up with was Rolex. Are there others? Is Nolex right?
Fauxlex
Durex?
Tackyex
Here’s one, name the watchmakers and name the one watch seller who has a history of not making a damn thing.
Unfortunately wearing a pocket watch on a daily basis isn't really a realistic option for most people. At least not if one doesn't want to come off as a bit of an eccentric.
a very weird title for this video. so scared of declaring you're showing pocket watches?
There are other watches you know.
There are. But few beat Rolex, let’s be honest.
@@KeepingWatchUKfor the price, most watches beat Rolex. They’re great watches, but very overpriced for what they are.
@@KeepingWatchUK 🤔
@@Jake-bt3fc 👍🏻
@@Jake-bt3fcAt face value maybe. But overall the opposite is true. You buy a Rolex at rrp & your spend is safe. Depreciation is low or not at all; some models even appreciate. Buy most other watches & you lose 10-50% out the door. Now tell me which brand offers better ‘value’!?
If it is not a rolex, it impresses noone becuase regular people have no idea what it is.
You just very simply explained why Rolex are really nothing very special!... They spent effort money and lots of promotion on creating a Brand rather than anything ground breaking in movement design
As is for Rolls Royce, very little ground breaking engineering and there are many vehicles that are way more advanced and in general a better car but the Rolls is still the BRAND by which all others are judged despite the fact they really are just average!
Lots of comments about being eccentric to wear a pocket watch. I see it as people who war pocket watches are independent thinkers who have the balls to do something differently.
Stop being sheep and wear a pocket watch 😂
Just buy the Rolex and get it over with!
Welding some lugs to those pocket watches would be a great way to make them more useful.
Yeeaaaah.... beautiful objects, but I don't have any money to burn on a beautiful pocket watch that will stay in the drawer
Petition for the hands to be back!
If the title doesn’t contain “Rolex” it’s not a WF video. So goddamn sick of this channel. Enough!
Beautiful timepieces... but anyone who pulls out a pocketwatch to tell the time in this day and age is being absurdly performative.
Rolex, Rolex, Rolex, come save us Rolex, we need help Rolex, we need views Rolex, we need to use your title in every video Rolex. It's all about Rolex even though we bash your brand in every video but we love you secretly Rolex. Marry me Rolex, Spend a night with me Rolex. Be my forever and ever Rolex. Come and dance with me Rolex.
My 1966 GMT is still going strong... 56yrs on my father's wrist & mine.
Go ahead and name ANY other useful and personal Mechanical, precision device that's over 50yrs old, and still 100% serviceable, ...by the original Manufacturer, Anywhere in the World.... 🤔
@@georgehofgren6123 any old Seiko model, and many other swiss watches other than Rolex
And the best part, you can have a master jeweller attach lugs, and have a solid gold wristwatch by Breguet that is of a size not intended for a toddler.
Still at a price lower than an entry level watch worn by a drug-dealing used cars salesman.
The click baiting has to stop, you can’t compare a wrist watch to a pocket watch please don’t stoop so low watch finder
Pocket watches. Disliked.
Meanwhile back in 2023
As beautiful as these are, unless you wear a suit or a waistcoat every day, they aren't in any way practical.
100 years ago they were daily wear for everyone. You can get belt chain, jeans have ready made pocket for a pocket watch.
People without watches pull their phone out of their pocket and almost everyone does this
@@jamesmartin3004 Not sure how stating the very obvious is relevant but hey. As for fitting most pocket watches into the tiny jeans pocket, they wouldn't fit, and would you really want to be stuffing something as expensive as these into your jeans? Not to mention the damage you could do to the crown when you sit down.
The comparison with a modern phone is beyond irrelevant.
