  • Recently we got a new showcase for Dragon's Dogma 2. This showed us new Dragon's Dogma 2 Gameplay, Monsters, Vocations & Mechanics. Here's my full analysis and thoughts!

    I Like how they are not running away from "Dragon's Dogma 2 is the same story but in another universe" Because thats lore acturate but also, they can make changes with almost total freedom

      That and it helps free up newcomers to the game that haven’t played the first. Even though the first is amazing and I highly recommend it, I can see why people haven’t tried the first or weren’t able to finish the game

      Im pretty much considering DD2 to be the first reimagined, with the budget to finally make it a dream come true, Capcom has been smart in recent years, and the RE engine is spectacular, cant wait for this!

      @@tommyllama4558 functionally their doesn’t seem to be much different. Same sort of setting, same basic concepts including Pawns, Arisen and the Dragons, the only difference is that they’re probably actually able to finish making the game this time. The landscape they showed of the land around Vermund looks almost like Gransys including the coliseum. Easy enough place to start off because I’m certain the scant lore points they had in the first game will be brought up in the second game. It’s basically the Dragons Dogma we should have had in the first place

      @@Broomer52we also know the map is 4x larger meaning there will fs be more stuff to discover, most likely the remaining content that got cut out from the first, like elves, the race and the elven cities along with all the quests for them will be in dd2

      These games were the first dark souls, as far as endurance goes. The battles can last for 30 minutes lol

    If the Talos fight looks already this insane just imagine the Dragon fight. Grigori was by far the coolest set piece in the original. I can't fathom how cool a fight like this is gonna look now.

      I'm more excited about the Endgame Content that DD2 has to offer later..yes grigori was an epic fight, but not the strongest enemy naturally in the game, the true endgame content was in the end the Daemon in BBI and the Primal Dragon that you had literally to defeat together with all players online, with you never knowing, if your fight will be the one, that just gets to kill it, or of you just fight a battle that cant be won, cause he flees has he has soo much health that you literally cant never beat it just alone ^^
      i find it very interestign, that the Trickster has his own color scheme, its purple/rose, which suggests, that its not some kind of classic hybrid class, that is like red/blue,. or red/yellow combinations , that we know about from DD1.
      DD1 had only 3 Base Classes, now with DD2 they increased it to minimum 4, but I still hope, they increase that from 4 to 6, by adding the Protector and the Merchant, so that theres also a defensive front fighter that can evolve into some kind of Paladin/mystic knight the way we know it from DD1, because mystic Spearhand is nothing liek the mystic knight from DD1. Dragosn Dogma online had already classes, that Id hope we will see in DD2 again, which woudl be only possible, if the Base Classes get expanded from 4 to 6, which then would explain adding basically the colors Purple and Rose/Pink, which would allow with a Merchant Class to bring back for example the Alchemist from DDO

    Not many people are talking about it but can we just appreciate the euphoria like ragdoll physics? I can't wait to role play the Generic infantry NPC and hold my shield up during a cyclops club swing and get smacked into tree trunks like a pinball 😁 it really brings a whole new level of immersion 👌

    To everyone skeptical of the leveling system, if you play all the way to level 100 as a sorcerer and decide to switch to a warrior, the exact opposite, you can still play the game successfully and have a great time. It does not in any way lock you out of a vocation or play style. It’s simply for maxing out stat gains and to make builds precisely. Otherwise it can almost be ignored

      It’s really if you want to min max. I would have preferred is leveling was flat no matter the vocation but it’s not game breaking like some like act to like it is.

      That happens because most of the characters damage atributes were tied to their weapons.

      Doesn't change the fact that it's probably one of the dumber game design decisions I've seen.
      So many other ways to handle it. Let your stats completely swap when you change vocations (as if you leveled the new class for all your levels). Or let you place your stat points and respec like every other good RPG. Or Have a flat stat progression with class playing no role in those numbers but gear being the main source of big stat boosts.
      Why would they choose a clearly stupid leveling stystem?

    It occurred to me watching the Talos fight that I would give damn near anything for the advanced vocation of the archer to be like a beast master ranger in dnd who's able to take control of different monsters and turn them to help the party. Imagine using that power to make a harpy grab you and fly up in the air while you rain arrows from above

    22:55 In the first DD you could grab a harpy or small flier and control the direction you fly in. I’ve been working on my 2nd play through of the first one. Definitely worth the $5.

    The showcase (rather, the post-showcase interviews with Itsuno) went into a bit of details about the standing on top of monsters mechanic. It's a completely new addition: it doesn't consume stamina, but the risk is that you'll immediately drop when the monster shakes you. Loving how they're making the climbing part much more interesting and tactical than the previous game!

      By the way, in the same interview, Itsuno said the food is rendered in-game. The interviewers specifically said the same thing you did ("it's gotta be real, right!?") hahaha

    The npc at 17:12 is known as The Dragonforged in the previous game. He has lived for over 1000 years, as to why is still speculated. One being that due to his distrust of people he couldn't form a Pact(because he didn't have anyone) and became mortally injured having to fight the Dragon barehanded due to his weapon breaking thus the "Dragonforged" moniker, so he decided to guide following generations of Arisen.

    Baldurs Gate 3 was a nice experience, spent a good 90 hours on that game. I have a feeling I'm going to spend hundreds on DD2

    The top of Talos' head is puffing with red mist
    At first I thought because it's the source of the brine
    But then I think it's more likely that Talos is a statue controlled by the brine
    So you break the plug and leak the water to defeat it
    There's probably more to it, though
    It would be nice if the purple/pink are new base vocations you can unlock for the new game pluses
    maybe for buff/de-buff focus, or even item-focus or unarmed-focus
    It probably won't happen, but one can dream,...

      Someone brought up pink and purple might be associated with the beastren. Either that it since unarmed combat has been significantly expanded on, maybe unarmed is treated as its own vocation.

      @@DANCERcow I thought it's connected to the false Arisen and their purple-reddish pendant, it shares the same colors as the crystals on Talos and the reason why Brine isn't affecting it is because it's just a doll / puppet being controlled not a living thing. To me it wouldn't make much sense that Brine would send or controll someone / something to kill the Arisen or whoever ^^

    One aspect Rurikhan forgot to mention is that certain enemies are weak to different elements. For example, when fighting wolves in the wild, your pawn may suggest that you use fire to because it does more damage. Other examples are flying enemies like harpies are weak to thunder and undead are weak to holy. Holy also recovers health when you attack. The more I remember about this game the more awesome it is.

      You should use fire on flying enemies, actually.
      Because enemies that are burning can't fly. If you can keep a gryphon burning, for instance, it can't flee to the blue tower.
      Really big monsters, like Elder Ogres and Cyclops, are *very* vulnerable to lightning.
      Undead are usually vulnerable to fire as well as holy.
      Holy is just useful in general because only two enemies in the whole game are resistant to it.
      Physical damage types *also* matter. Slashing is pretty good in general, but skeletons and golems are more vulnerable to bashing damage- This is especially notable on the golems because they are rather durable.
      And *do not* sleep on status effects. Even the humble wet status can make a big difference, granting significant resistance to fire and massive weakness to both Lightning and Cold.

    24:09 Archery in the first game was super useful. And kinda OP if you were willing to just pour your money on the ground for explosive arrows. Every enemy had "strong" and "weak" points- Archery made it convenient to continually strike those weakpoints, whereas you often had to climb the monster or knock it down to reach those points with a melee character.
    They wanted elves and beastren in the original- but like a lot of other stuff, it had to be cut. Budget and time constraints.
    I can understand the convenience of having your pawns manage your inventory, but tbh I'd rather do it myself. Because I'm a picky fucker and I want to know exactly who has what at any given time. Especially because pawns can use healing items on their own volition. What specific items I'm willing to give them for their own use matters.
    They made Saurian tails *really* long. Like, they are definitely much longer than they were before.
    38:58 You absolutely could not stand on monsters in the first game.
    It's Sync casting. And it's *really* strong since it let's you just skip most of the charge up to a spell. And I'm having DeJa'Vu of the bad kind watching that animation. The Difference between Bolide and it's higher forms is more meteors, *However* only two meteors in a casting can hit a single target unless RNG really, really loves you or you have grand bolide which hits three times- meaning that a max cast of High Bolide was a waste unless there at least 3-5 enemies, and Grand Bolide was a waste unless you had five or more enemies (and since you needed to use a ring slot to use grand bolide, I often didn't bother. There are more generally useful things you could put in that slot.) The thing is, the cast time is really quite long and can be interrupted easily- in most cases, it makes a lot more sense to just chain cast first tier bolide if the enemy count is low since you can cast it twice in the same amount of time you can cast grand bolide once. One cheesy thing to note is that multi-headed enemies- like hydras or chimera's- counts as multiple enemies for the spell, making bolide *very* nice to use against them.
    Of course, your pawn *always* max casts. No matter what. A lot of the time the battle would be basically over, or they'd get nervous and cancel/move before they could manage a grand bolide- but they definitely could have gotten in a regular bolide if they bothered. Basically? Time is the most important factor for a spellcaster. Always. To get the most out of being a caster, every second counts.
    Yeah, I spent a lot of time playing casters. And Mystic knight. A little sad to see mystic knight being removed- but it was also kind of half baked. I mean, a counter specialty class without a taunt? What? The self enchantments on your sword/mace were generally not that great (exception being abyssal anguish) and you were better off just countering if you couldn't cheese with Ruinous Sigil and Grand Cannon- which, let me just say, is *crazy* cheesy if you set it up right. Mystic spearhand looks pretty cool- quick and powerful.
    BTW, the there are two ice spells that leave ice behind- one was an ice spike that comes from below (called Frigor. REALLY nice for fighting fire dragons and also makes blocks you can use as a stepping stone) and the other (glicel) made ice spears- these could block enemy movement for a moment, but also contained a physical component to the damage they did- this matters because some enemies, like golems, are more or less immune to magic damage- also you can blind cyclopes with it.
    If they do like last time and have one combination vocation for every possible combination, we're looking at a total of at least fourteen vocations. And whatever the hell trickster is. If there are more basic vocations, this number will grow fast.

    Heavy agree with the particle FX point at 38:20 , but just want to chime in with some clarification of causation vs. correlation for Unreal Engine being specifically the culprit of overblown Particles. It's 100% down to the game designer's choices of how they've built the particles. The actual specific effects are rather system agnostic, and could be done in any modern engine (with varying degrees of difficulty to achieve one effect or another, per Engine ofc), it's simply down to art direction and how "heavy-handed" the FX Artists are with how many particles they are spawning. The same overuse sometimes seen in modern Unreal Games could 100% happen in a RE:Engine game, it's just down to smart art direction and the devs of say, DD2 being gameplay-focused over throwing a ton of particles out for no real benefit.
    The reason we probably get these games made in UE with overblown FX is twofold: 1. Unreal Engine has a really robust and relatively easy to get going particle system (called Niagara if anyone cares) that comes with templates that spawn hundreds of particles. Great for sparks, rain, etc. It's extremely easy to get a particle system going that just sprays hundreds if not thousands of particles around. 2. Niagara Particles can handle a LOT of stuff. Like a lot. So often times designers will go crazy without regards to gameplay feel, or have built out an awesome over-the-top system in isolation and then they pass it on for use without time (or care/effort) for a second oversight pass for that gameplay feel.
    One UE game that springs to mind is Immortals of Aveum, which just spews big globs of thousands of colored emissive sparks for everything. Every hit reaction, every spell cast. It's bad. But to be clear, it doesn't need to be like that, and Unreal is more than capable of having well art-directed particle FX or even stylized hand-painted ones, it's just extremely easy to go overboard.

    33:30 I think you missunderstood what the automatic face generator was. It's not like what you have in Elden ring for instance. It's not repeat until you have something you like.
    Look at the top, 3 steps, the first having multiples pages of base templates, the second and the third changing specific details.
    For instance, the hair is changed on second step, the eyes on the third.
    I actually prefer that over the random repeat of Elden Ring that usually give poor result to me.
    Here it seems they made an effort in proposing things that is actually consistent, not completly random.

    I think when it came to the Talos boss fight, Talos is a god made of bronze so I think the exposed broken eye is attacked because the other looks like a gem encased in the bronze.

    The cool thing about the in games items is that you don't have to use them if you don't want to. I don't see the big deal. If you don't want them either sale them or leave them in your stash box.

    Im so stoked!! Im so torn between starting as an Archer or Thief! I LOVED strider in DD, so having to choose between my bow or my daggers is unfair!!

    Min/max'ing in Dragon's Dogma was a myth and resulted in most players not even having close to enough stamina to effectively play the vocations they wanted to, and spending WAY too much time playing vocations they had no interest in to do so.
    The results are differences in maybe a few hundred damage, usually well under 1000 actual damage dealt. WEAPONS ARE THE ULTIMATE FACTOR IN DAMAGE OUTPUT. Play what you want, when you want, and focus on upgrading your gear as much as possible.

    I think itsuno himself said that the food you see being made from camping is actual real footage of food cooking which is what makes it looks so good lol

      Capcom fucking loves food, in monster hunter world they have like 7 and a half minutes of footage dedicated to food preparation cut scenes, they're entirely unnecessary but someone at capcom cooks for sure and realised it adds to immersion

    I can't wait to play this. I might even actually wait on getting FF7 Rebirth just to avoid any crossover between those two games.
    Still no idea which Vocation I gonna start with. Since Trickster got this weird Purple/Pink as its colors I have still hope that my beloved Mystic Knight might return even though Mysitic Spearhand got the Red/Blue one Mystic Knight previously had.

      I think the new Mystic Knight will be a hybrid if Fighter/Cleric. Which opens up some intriguing possibilities. Trickster will likely be made from Alchemist/Cleric. I can't imagine what the other hybrids could be. Alchemist Ranger, Cleric Thief, Mage Cleric, Mage Alchemist etc could be wild

      @jahboidb 9 vocations sounds like a dumbest move on their part. There were 11 in the base game and 14 online. I expect at minimum somewhere in-between dd1 and ddo at maximum 27, and being reasonable possibly 18. They could be saving additional vocations for future reveals as well as the merch to go with it

    I really hope they have a way to redistribute stats when changing vocations. That was one of the most annoying parts of Dragon's Dogma, having to play dozens of levels of a particular vocation just to get the attributes you wanted.

    Minotaur is present in Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen - Bitterblack Isle, but not huge like they show in this trailer.

      The Eliminators are not actual minotaurs though; they're undead wearing a helmet.

    there is another good point of pawn taking items from you is good sine pawns do use healing items on themselves and other pawns as well as the arisen.

    I'm so excited for this game cause I hope that Capcom is sinking everything into this game, I know that we'll get a FULL COMPLETE GAME but the unfinished parts are gonna be pretty there but I'm afraid they're gonna sell us the unfinished parts to us like dark arisen

      Depends on the quest, some quests they give the exact location, others they leave it up to you.

    Regarding the character creator, you probably can't keep going iterating with the options they suggest. It actually said head 3/3 after that third generation. So probably that's it I guess

    Definitely was too easy to resurrect pawns, but when you have dragons that can instakill pawns it makes me hope that they rework some of the hindrances to using pawns on the second game

    I’m just waiting for Rurikhan to be in a battle and go to heal, but his pawn has taken his healing item for the 5th time. I see the Logistician specialization being interesting, but a lot of the pawn stuff in the first game ended up being kinda annoying.

    I really hope they change the stat growth, i like big damage but to min max i dont want to play Assasin till level 200 just to get max ATK or Sorcerer for magick attack.
    But according to the livestream it seems to be like the first one, i really hope they add a level reset mechanics, otherwise i have to use a mod/editor.

      @@DANCERcow well there is another problem with it thats really bad: switching from a non magic class to magic makes you extremly weak since you gained very low magick attack stats each level.
      So that means you have to make a new charakter and start from scratch. In the first game there were no multiple savegames so you had to overwrite your current save one. Fun isnt it?

      @@Ilidan9 no stats never mattered, people have shown off the differences in real-gameplay, and it makes no difference, What ACTUALLY matters was Weapons and Augments, base leveling stats did not matter.having Weapons and Augments bridged the difference almost instantly. And if you use Periapts, stats 100% didn't matter on top of that. You lose what....maybe 3-10 seconds on a boss kill with regular stats that aren't min maxed??? thats fucking laughable, and hilarious that so many people were touting how much stronger min maxed characters were.

      @@Tommyvang187 you are half right. Weapons close the gap of the damage issue, if you dont have good weapons, till then your core stats matter more.
      if we are talking about people committing to only a strenght focused vocation for example fighter->warrior, you will notice it on higher level if you switch to a sorcerer.
      Having a balanced distribution by switching every now is the way to go. Nothing is unbeatable but they can be minutes of differences if you compare it to the high end boss fights like UR (online) or dlc area bosses
      I dont want to advocate for minmaxing, just that it is a factor and sometimes a 20-50% dmg boost.
      I speedruned the game multiple times back in the days and i felt gimped when i switched my assasin lvl 150 to a sorcerer and tried the Dlc area, it was really tough.
      Edit: TLDR, it benefits everyone if the stats growth is balanced and if you unintentionally play a glass canon stat growth for too long it "will" hurt you, (health, stamina, defense, damage output in opposite class)

    At the character creator keep your eyes on the UI design. The intuitive character picker seems to only generate 3 phases deep.

    I don't think plot narrative was the focus of the original game. It was supposed to be emulating classical RPGs, thus the setting, and story was dressing for the gameplay. Capcom has never been the best or made story the greatest priority even when they try. They do best with gameplay and in the past, identifiable art/style, so they may be putting more emphasis on what was not a priority before. But again, it's hard to say as story is just not their strength (could have been for Breath of Fire, where that was crucial and it was getting there comparing BoF IV and Dragon Quarter to past games and any other IP they've done).

    so the talos looks like all it's weak points are old wounds that it was hit with something that destroyed it's armour and are still poking out so it's none weak eye is probs still armoured stone and invunrable
    if you can hit it with whatever made the weak points I wonder

      I promise it's more than that. In the original some of the layout was wack and you had to dig a bit for some of the options.

    Yep, you could steer harpies and other flying enemies in the original game, but it was only useful to get one macabre sculpture in bitterblack island.
    Also, I noticed that Talos is oozing something that looks like the Brine, and it comes from the ocean, so maybe it's its source? That'd be quite a nice solution to explain the existence that stupid monster.

    Knowing how little things in the character creator affect gameplay. I wouldn't be surprised if making your character look like an elf warrant a reaction from the elves themselves when they see you can't speak elvish. Wouldn't guarantee this but would be hilarious.

    When we hire another player's pawn, is the pawn's knowledge automatically updated as the player progresses in their world?

      DD:DA uploaded and downloaded pawn data whenever the player who owned and the player who hired Slept at an Inn.
      So it won't update in real time but close enough to it for the owner provided they sleep regularly in town.
      The one hiring had to send away, then re-hire said pawn if the Owner made changes such as vocations or even gear changes.
      It's likely to work the same way but there could be changes to the system.

      Well, Archer plus Thief will be Strider, Thief will lead to Rogue, Archer leads to Ranger.
      Trickster having 2 colors of unrevealed classes indicates there will be way more vocations. This demonstration is just a sampler of a few, but not all.

    I had bought the first game and left it in the pile of shame. I fired it up yesterday and it's got a lot of potential but I don't feel like it will keep me invested. I do plan on checking out 2 when it comes out though. As far as spoilers, I don't know that you can since this is supposed to be an entirely different world from the first game.

    trickster is weird, not just in how it works by using illusions of fuck with AI but if you look at its symbol you'll see something weird... unless color blindness, anyway it's a hybrid of purple and pink. neither of those colors existed for vocations in the original game. even if purple is somehow a mistake, meant to be blue so it's mage and pink, pink is entirely new for vocation colors. the base game only had 9 vocations, 6 of them being single colors of red, yellow, and blue and the last 3 were just the 3 possible pairings within those 3. having 2 or 3 new colors entirely is insane for the possibilities of vocation variety. before this showcase i was begging for something like the trickster but i thought it was going to be blue/green with the new thief, since that has no hybrids that we've seen as of yet. with this, there are at least 4 more vocations with some green in them but now maybe 6 if grean/purple and green/pink are in the mix. not to mention red, yellow and blue all mixed with either purple or pink. personally, i'm insanely hyped for the whole can of worms that this opens up with the sheer amount o vocations/play styles. the trickster looks fun, the original game was known for giving you a wide variety of active skills/spells to choose from so i'm looking forward to seeing all the new abilities for old and new vocations alike. the AI also has me very curious, with how confident they are in it and how there's an entire vocation for messing with it.
    the physics of the cyclopse getting stuck on the tree, amazing collision detection, proves that this engine will likely handle things like lagiacrus easily with current gen hardware. seeing this, i'd be shocked if the next Monster Hunter doesn't have lagiacrus and najarala. seems like the engine couldn't do its full potential on the Switch for Rise and that's the only reason we got some leviathans and not others.

      i meant the icon @@ouroboros3705 i was drawing attention to the colors, the weapon symbol itself is not relevant because it's unlikely any other vocation will use it. the original game had some more basic weapons that multiple vocations can use like daggers or a staff but in this game those seam to be more exclusive anyway and the sensor is a hybrid vocation weapon like the spellbow. this game is changing it so the fighter can use the mace that was formerly exclusive to the mystic knight vocation that seems to be gone.

    Ranger with tenfold arrow and blast arrows, you need quite a number of arrows, but you will kill pretty much anything pretty quick, this is a low level showcase for sure.

    I just hope the game world is more alive and wish they solved the travel problem. The original had so much untapped potential. Traveling on foot and constantly being ambushed was not fun. There is only a handful of portal crystals to place in the game world and you have to think through where to place them strategically in case you need to return (on foot) to the far side of the map again. Travelling shouldn't be a chore in any video game. This is not the real world and has nothing to do with "realism" in a game with harpies and cyclopses.

    What I would like to know is if this game can be played PG-friendly. One of the great things about so many of the JRPGs including Monster Hunter is that they are kid-friendly not counting online stuff. Western style games seem to always put in swearing, explicit Essex talk, and blood spatter you can’t turn off. Sometimes this is necessary for the story but usually not. Is this game going to at least let you put a PG filter on dialogue and turn off blood spatter? In 2024, with machine learning language models, there really isn’t any excuse to not have that sort of thing.
