Johnny Winter, 1971. It was a good year to rock and roll and he was just the man to do it. Last time I saw him he got me and one of my old buddies into his show for free. We showed up stoned and had no tickets. He said follow me fellows, so we walked in like we owned the place. Hootchie Koo!! I miss that guy.
Even though some comments are criticizing the bassist, he is holding the groove during Johnny’s solo section and never loses the One, despite not having a drummer and playing a flurry of 16th’s and funky offbeats, walking etc. I think it challenged Johnny as well, who did a remarkable job. In this room, the bass notes can clearly be heard whereas on stage it could have boomed like a sea of mud. Randy is playing a Dan Armstrong plexiglass body bass, which was in vogue during the early 70’s as Jack Bruce was using one, following his Cream years of a Gibson EB-3. I’m glad we have this vid up on TH-cam, it captures the time in Johnny Winter history.
What is so cool about his style , he could play the same song 10 times in a row , and play it with a diffrent style each time !

Johnny is so interesting in an informal setting. His speaking voice is just as alluring as his singing voice.

Wow, at the time of this gig, I was in 4th grade in US school. Since then I've seen Johnny live three times myself and he always played one or another Firebird. Finally got my own Firebird three weeks ago! Been searching one for many years, for obvious reasons.

This song always takes me back to the Mecca in Sunderland on a Friday night in the early 70s, when I had hair to throw around. I still have a copy of the 45rpm vinyl single and on CD. I still play it on a regular basis, the track is timeless.

Have a great true story. Saw him one night in Red Hook, NY. Because of a massive snowstorm, there were maybe 30 people at the bar, so my band and I got to stand 10 feet from him. He and his drummer and bassist played the full concert. As a guitarist, I watched his every move which was flawless. He didn't miss one note. Man, he is a genius. and he is (was) a machine about it too.

I saw Johnny at the Swing Auditorium in '74 ... the Loudest show I ever saw! My ears actually were ringing for 3 days afterwards.

I saw him in a small club in the ‘80s when I was about 15 or 16. I made my way right up to the front of the stage and was about as close to him as the bass player in this clip. He blew my mind and was a huge influence on my playing, and my ears are still ringing! Rock On, Johnny.
Kevy Nova Congratulations. Anybody who saw Johnny perform knows he put so much in his shows. This is a good clip. As you know, Johnny also played slide guitar.
In 1971 I was living out of a camper in Berkeley. A friend of mine, also from Austin, invited me over to his apt. to hear him and a friend jamming. The friend was JW. I was the sole audience member. Memorable, and perhaps the best playing I have ever seen!
PS Went on for about 4 hours. Johnny was looking for someone for his band. My friend didn't make it even tho he was also really good.

This is like getting a guitar lesson from the greatest teacher in the world.
Saw Johnny in concert at the U of Minnesota in 1970. What he did with that guitar and voice to the audience is something I will never forget. He literally blew everyone's mind (I know, old term). At the end of his amazing concert, people ran out of the auditorium screaming at the top of their lungs. The audience stood on the mall at the U of M just screaming with joy. Unfuckenreal.
Coconut Grove, Boardwalk, Santa Cruz ('78 or so). I had no clue who Johnny Winter was. Until then.
He made guitar playing look so easy and flawless.He had a unique way of playing his blues, but so captivating and hard to turn away from.Very cool dude. RIP Johnny🙏

Kind of strange that Rick Derringer wrote R&R Hoochie Koo in 1970 but didn't release it as his own single until 1973 (his only solo Top 40). Of course he had a Top 40 with The McCoys (Hang On Sloopy). Cool he gave it to Johnny for the JW And album, maybe it's not so strange since Rick was part of the JW And band (basically The McCoys). I'm sure he got his royalties.

So, so happy I saw Johnny Winter, early 2000's at legendary Antone's Blues Club. Austin, Texas.
Much like the "Pinball Wizard," he rested his hand on the shoulder of a roadie who lead him on stage - turned him toward the mic, plugged him in, and OFF HE WENT!
Great night of blue/rock. Would up meeting/speaking with Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes. They're were passing through town, found out JW was jamming, stopped in..Robinson was very cool with all, laid back and friendly. JW was masterful.

Hearing and seeing this makes me stoked beyond words because I will pick up my Firebird guitar next week...feels like a religious experience...I have wanted one so bad since I first heard Johnny...I pray he will somehow bless me as I try to channel that spirit he’s BLESSED me with for over 45 years...from the time I first heard him. Nobody like you, Johnny, never will be. I will have a Firebird in my hands. Happy beyond words.

Rick Derringer, in an interview, said he went to see Johnny Winter for the first time and, at first, thought “...well, he’s pretty good, but... Well, after a few songs he put on the bottleneck slide and started ripping it up and that’s when I got it!”

Thanks RitY for the upload! JW's feel for the blues is so unique. Other greats of his era would "milk" licks to build up tension, while Johnny smoothly moved from one phrasing to another. Great to see this loose jam duo and a Dan Armstrong Lucite Bass in action.

ahh, I remember those acrylic guitars and the ludwig clear drum set also. lol Very cool. That's the youngest image of him that I have ever seen. I was fortunate to mix monitors for him at a blues festival not long before he passed. Of course he was pretty old, had to sit the entire show. He played a lot of slide. It was a treat for me being a guitarist and listening to him and learning licks from his live album when I was a teenager and young adult. What a special person and so much a part on the 70's and 80's music scene along with a life playing the blues circuits for a living. A family it is indeed.

Johnny was a guest at my brother's wedding in '94. Somebody handed him an acoustic guitar and he launched into a quick rendition of "Lucille", which had the families chuckling ironically.

At 5:00 Johnny finally answered a question that had been bothering me for decades!! Kinda after this clip moreso and as he got older, I would hear him sing and I always wondered if he was just making noises because maybe he forgot the words, well I cant believe he just admitted it!!!
I would listen to him and say "Theres no way he is using words there, he is just mumbling and making noises!"
