When I was young and just starting to play, I was obsessed with Johnny Winter’s blues rock soloing prowess.
Fast forward to right now - 2019 - his brother Edgar Winter is coming over to my studio and having me record guitar parts on a Johnny Winter tribute record !!!!
Here’s the story, and a free TH-cam lesson on soloing in the style of Johnny
This free TH-cam lesson is an excerpt from a 9 video episode we just added to the Masterclass.
to take the free 14 day trial! The Masterclass, and your support, make it possible to keep doing these fun TH-cam videos.
    Thanks!

“possibly” hell. I think it’s the best song ever recorded. Pure, raw, unreal clean and emotional. I’m thrilled to hear you say it though. Not enough people know of his genius.
A gift from God. The Picasso of guitar playing

I played guitar with Edgar for a bunch of shows in the mid ‘80s, which was a joy. He’s a true genius and a sweetheart of a guy, and his songs are so fun to play!

Hi Tim. I am a Leelion who is a music producer in Korea. Today, the record of a musician named Shin Hae-cheol, who became a deceased person now in Korea, was released. He is a hero to me. I saw your name in the album credits. I am so happy to hear the music of two musicians whom I admire so much. Thank you for participating in this album.

Johnny Winter is an okay guitarist I guess... I mean I only started listening to him in '69 and have only seen him live 50 times. Hell I never drove more than three days to see him play. It's not like I have his entire discography... I don't own the one talked about here...yet. Okay, so I have one of his guitars but that's only because he gave it to me, it's not like I went out and bought the darn thing. Yeah, one of the walls in my music room is covered in Johnny Winter concert posters and memorabilia, but hey, what was I supposed to do? That wall looked empty and dull. That lady in Hollywood who sells rare and hard to find posters keeps selling JW stuff to me so I have to put it somewhere and the Rory Gallagher wall was taken. Sure he is always in my iPod... what am I supposed to do... listen to other Blues guitarists all day?

    • @awickedtribe
      @awickedtribe ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@TomKaszuba I saw him the year before he passed away... I was excited because I was taking my brother and his friend to see JW for their first time. I had talked him up for months and played them several JW albums, then took them both to see him.
When they announced him I was all jacked-up and excited... then he came out with s shuffling step, hand on a guys shoulder, being led to the stage. The guy took JW's hand off his shoulder, then went to set up his little chair. While he was doing this JW looked confused and started to walk off stage, but his guide got him and helped to his chair, then took up his guitar off the stand. I was sad thinking that this was going to be my bro's first Johnny Winter experience. and then the guy put that guitar in Johnny's hands... and for the next hour+ my brother and his friend had their ears pierced and the thier minds blown.
I knew Johnny in the 70s and had seen him at his worst, so I should have known he was going to shine! I had tickets to go see him when he died.... that was a sad freakin' day for me.

One of the coolest aspects of soloing over one chord is the freedom. As long as you know how to come back inside, you can get very interesting sounds by going outside of the harmony.

I learned to play guitar listening to "Still Alive And Well" by Johnny Winter. Wore several copies of that album out. Always preferred "Captured Live to "Johnny Winter And". Johnny's slide solo on the live version of "Highway 61 Revisited" from "Captured Live" is epic. Probably the greatest rock slide guitar performance ever.

Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix and Leslie West are my main influences growing up. Johnny was a unique guitar player for his time. He used a thumb pick and was a hard core Blues Guitarist that rocked the house. No one plays or sounds anything like Johnny. Jimi liked Johnny's guitar playing so much he would some times play bass when they jammed. Jimi also played bass on his early recordings. I don't think most people realize how good Johnny really was. I do. He was a killer guitar player!

Just heard a song from the JW And... live album this morning by way of my portable music player while on a dog walk. Johnny B. Good, specifically. Yep, you aren't the only one out there still listening to JW and Rick Derringer after all these years. That said, I might as well drop this story about you here: My neighbor is from a well known Hollywood family who often participates in various charity events in L.A. and Palm Springs. Recently after one such event in Palm Springs he made mention that he did a live comedy bit on stage in front of a crowd. The bit was him singing along to the Sinatra song, Something Stupid, duet style with someone singing Nancy Sinatra's part. He showed me the video on his phone. I asked who his singing partner was. "Oh, she's married to the long time guitarist of Rick Springf... and before he could finish his name, I said, "Tim Pierce." He looked at me stunned. "How could you possibly know that?" I had to remind him I know a thing or two about musicians. ;)

I "had" the Roadwork album on vinyl, and now have it on CD. I was introduced to it about... I'm thinking 1973 when I was 12 by my aunt. I'm thinking she was in high school. I took it to school(7th grade) on a music share day in choir class. This was when generic kiddie pop like "billy, don't be a hero" was harmlessly popular. When asked to share what I had brought... it lasted about 20 seconds. I don't recall which song I had chosen to share, but the teacher had a grimace on his face that suggest he thought my selection was hardly appropriate for kids my age. I still love the combining of rock, blues, r&b and a great horn section. Johnny Winter could be as visceral as a sonic baseball bat, or as soulful as need be. One of my favs is still "Please Come Home for Christmas" done by both of the Winter men off the "Hey, where' your Brother" CD. Truly epic musicians.

And then you mention Doug Rappaport (? spell) who is my favorite modern day guitarist/composer! Just listen to his compositions that he makes for his product demos. Just magnificent compositions and executions. Everyone is different and insane. I love that guy! Love the Mini Humbuckers - so much, that back in '71 or '72 I bought a LP Deluxe with mini's and I just love love it. It crunches but also gets real sweet when you need it. Would love to see your session(s) with Edgar, so the question is - are you gonna video and post it? Carry on with your great work! Alp

I've got to have that all star album
So when we hear this part we will know it's Tim Pierce
    I like that
Just like the old days where we'd chase around record shops for albums with people like Jeff Porcaro or Paul Jackson Jr in the credits

Johnny Winter And with Rick Derringer!!!!! Rock & Roll Hootchie-Koo, greatest rock song of all time! No, really.
Saw them live at Fillmore West and yes, burned out both albums.

The lick starting at 7:30 - for me it is a lot easier to play if I use my little finger on the 1st string and my 2nd and 3rd fingers together for the bend on the second string.
Johnny Winter has also been one of my top favorites ever since I first saw him on German Rockpalast in 1979. Before that I mostly listened to hard rock, discovering Johnny Winter basically started my lifelong passion for blues.

Been buying copies of Johnny Winter And Live since it was new. One of the few that I have in every format that I'm aware it's available in (Vinyl, 8-track, cassette, CD, streaming files). Bobby Caldwell on drums who also played on Rick Derringer's hit version of "Hoochie Koo", with Captain Beyond, and Armageddon (with Keith Relf).
