    More steps have to be taken to start an old locomotive like the SD40-2, from what I saw in the video. But after all the prep, oh, that wonderful rhythmic sound! That locomotive was the backbone of American railroading. A true workhorse of the rails.

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If this loco had sat out int he rain then you are right, it would need
      to have the pet cocks opened and engine turned over before trying
      to start, sure wish I had put that in the video. But this was kept in
      the warm shop all night so didn't need to do that videonut. Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend.

There's nothing like the sound of the locomotives throttling up as they are outbound from Columbus. The horns on the SD70ACes are by far my favorite. Those almost-antique locomotives took a lot of manual setting to start and operate. And some older big military aircraft used external starter units to start one engine that would start the other engines. Indeed prior to starter motors, automobiles had to be hand-cranked. And now there will be self-driving cars.

    What's really fun is coaxing one of these things into life outdoors in near freezing temperatures. Diesel doesn't like that and these don't have glow plugs like cars/trucks do.
    You crank and crank and then *whoof* one cylinder will kick, then *whoof whoof*, then three and so forth until all 16 rumble into life.
    Then you look up and the entire town is covered in a white haze.
