it was a steep learning curve, but i love my CNC, its use is only limited by your imagination. i must add that i think a drum sander like you have, is almost a must when signmaking, gets stock dead flat so you dont lose depth when carving, i found lots of prefinished boards can dip by a millimetre or two at corners and edges, my drum sander is smaller footprint and quieter than a planer, so i can use it on weekends. wish i had space for a larger machine but we work with what we have. cheers

You can also use a clearance tool within the v-carve toolpath window instead of doing a separate pocket toolpath. You can actually use multiple clearance tools if it’s a big area.
I sure like your videos. Also, having messed up my wrists but still interested in woodworking I can see the possibility of using CNC adaptions to get back into the craft/art again. I'll be watching thank you for getting my blood flowing a bit more than usual.

Great video thank you. I use a hand held router and cnc bits and do the same. You might want to look at Frisco brand stencil vinyl, it has a higher tack. I also use permanent vinyl 12x12 squares and on the rolls and it’s awesome.
I am working on a design where I would need a multiple square checker pattern painted in 2 different colors. Do you have any idea on how to go about getting this done??
I’m trying to cut letters out of 1/4” birch to use. Any idea the best bit. Some tighter areas. I’ve tried 1/16” endmill and it ends up messing up the letters even with tabs used

I recently bought the V-Carve Pro software and came across a VERY informative training program put out by Kyle Ely with Learn Your CNC. I bought into it and found it to be well worth the money. I am currently 'Breaking My Way' through learning a CNC. Mine is home built. I built a 1500 x 1500 for about $1500. As a test I dumped a 3d relief bmp in and setup a a roughing and two finishing cuts. Went from 1/4, to 1/8 to tapered ball nose. Problem was, the tapered ball nose cut was 14M lines of gcode. I had to disable the visual toolpath just so Mach3 woulld stop crashing. The Vectric estimator was 843 hours at 100mm per second. I thought it was lying so I launched it. Even after cranking Mach3 up to about 300% feed rate I thought it was just running the same line over and over.
It's me again. Re-watching your video for, I think, the 3rd time because it's very helpful. I have a question for you: Oramask application. Do you have a trick for applying that? Seems when I use it, it's so curled up, I end up getting dust\debris under it. Not a lot but enough to bug the he|| out of me. lol I'm half tempted to cut out a series of 10x12 sheets (for a 9x11 cut) and laying them out flat and putting weight on them. I'll have to try it on one sheet to see if that works. Thanks again!!
Aspire is like $3K US. It seems to be excellent software. VCarve/Pro is what, $700? I currently use grbl candle and gimp/inkscape. There's not much you can't do with those. In fact, there is much more that can be done with them than I have yet learned. Aspire does have a grbl post processor. It's an add on one must find and install. I'm guessing your setup was in the $10K range? For anyone wanting to make a business venture, it might be recommended to have a well thought out and researched plan to do that. I see a lot of people at craft fairs these days hawking the same product designs because they are not actually artists or designers. Spend enough time online and you will quickly see how many people buy these machines and snag the same designs to call their own. Anyway, nice video and kudos for sharing your knowledge.

I noticed that you set up your design in the center of your workpiece and zeroed XY from there and used the probe for Z. Is there any reason you don't use the probe on one of the corners and set your XY Z that way? I'm new to this and so far I have been zeroing from the center and used the probe for Z.. But I finally figure out how to use it, zeroing from the lower left corner, and it just seems a little easier to me. Can you please explain what's really the difference? Thank you so much.
I have played around with Vetric's software on a friends computer. Great software that simplifies CNC designing, but I can't justify the high cost to run my hobby grade machine.
I want to start making a few items and make it a little business, but this all seems overwhelming..... from learning how to use the software, positioning the wood in its proper spot and operating the machine.
One you tuber I watched used water based wood filler thinned and spread evenly on the surface to mask instead of oramask. Just sand off the wood filler after the carve and paint.
MDF? That is surprising to me. I manage a sign/wide-format department and almost never use MDF(only upon client insistence). It is always MDO(when I have my way) because it is much more durable and looks great. $30 bit? All the bits for my CNC cost $35-$80. Well, except for the 0.6mm bits. Those are petty cheap.

Use a 15° engrave bit for super sharp corners as a perimeter route, although a more common 25° bit works well too.

Carbide create has a nice advanced v carve where you can enable a separate bit along with your v bit to cut out those larger areas all in one go
