  • Gerald Finzi's "Five Bagatelles" - the "Prelude", "Romance", "Carol", "Forlana" and "Fughetta", are played here by Michael Collins on clarinet and Michael McHale on piano.
The pictures are by the English painter, designer, book illustrator, wood engraver and official war artist Eric Ravilious. Many of his works depict the countryside of the south east of England and seem to capture a sense of Englishness that existed between the First and Second World Wars.

The duo of the Finzi's bagatelles and the Ravilious pictures is an inspired combination. They both evoke something elusive--a feeling of sights, sounds and emotions that are at once so intensely personal, familiar--as if they were part of oneself--and yet far away, locked in a pristine past whose presence is yet still vivid and living--perhaps like childhood memories that are very dear and poignant. Impossible to describe; utterly beautiful. The performance is stunning.

I find these Bagatelles so compellingly reminiscent of my years in England. The country-side literally flows before you. My oldest son played Carol at the funeral of my then youngest son. Very moving. This recording is so elegantly played and sensitively understood. Finzi was a remarkably intuitive and unpretentious composer. Delightful. Thank you.

The carol is the perfect sound embodiment of Christmas morning to me. In early 2004 I made a deal with a clarinetist. If she would play the Finzi Carol ( which I accompanied) at our churches Christmas service in Baltimore, I would accompany her at her wedding a month later in Iowa.

So beautiful. Shades of some old English folk songs in the Prelude.. and then in the Romance section it's rather like a warm lazy late Summer's afternoon in the garden with a book. Insects buzzing, blue sky mind wandering... finishing with an urgent call from the house!!

So elegante, charming, reflective, ethereal et quintessentially melodic. There is passion, drama and emotion in Mr. Finzi's music. The accompanying art painted by Mr. Ravilious is breathtaking. Thank you Mr. Harris.

Lovely music and art works. Finzi's is always a joy. Eric Ravilious was sadly lost at sea near Iceland while undertaking his war artist duties. He was just 39. He lived for a time in Castle Hedingham, Essex and some of the village scenes shown here resemble parts of that village.

Ravilious' illustrations are a perfect complement to the angular sweetness of Finzi's music; reflective, wistful almost- a way of looking back that feels free of sentimentality. Have never heard the bagatelles performed with such clarity of tone and phrasing as here; the line never goes slack or falters. A truly marvellous recording. Thanks so much.

Maybe it's a matter of individual perception, but some of Finzi's more intimate music does not lend itself to a concert situation. It touches our innermost self at a very personal level, which cannot be shared except among kindred, understanding spirits. The wonderful paintings here also parallel the introspective aspects of forgotten dreams and memories, bringing them to the surface.
