In 1941, shortly before being drafted into the war effort, Finzi finished three pieces for clarinet, using ‘20-year-old bits and pieces’. With a fourth piece added, they were given their first performance in January 1943 at one of the famous National Gallery lunchtime concerts that went ahead daily during the war.
A Finale was added for publication in July 1945, and the Five Bagatelles immediately became Finzi’s most popular work. However, the composer dismissed the pieces as 'only trifles’ and ‘not worth much, but got better notices than my decent stuff’.

The spirited opening ‘Prelude’ is followed by a peaceful ‘Romance’, a tender 'Carol', the 'Forlana' and a zippy Finale which shows off all the versatility of the instrument.

I’m playing the whole song for a solo contest in March, and I’m in love with every note! I just started learning the 5th movement a week ago. It’s pretty hard but it’s nice to have a challenge! 😊

well in that case the clarinet part is easier than the piano - you wouldn't get any grade 6 piano students anywhere near it!

How in all my years of playing clarinet did I never hear of this piece? After 40 years of playing very infrequently I think I could actually learn some of these!

I remember playing the first movement, and third movement back in 7th grade for a solo competition. It was a class one, so it was a difficult solo, considering we only had 1-2 years of experience. Now as a freshman, it’s crazy to think our marching music is quite a bit harder than the two movement, and don’t even get me started on the regional etudes. I am now currently working on Viktor’s Tale by John Williams, which is also much more difficult than the two movements I played back in 7th grade. Good times, to anyone having to preform this, good luck.
I performed Viktors Tale by John Williams last semester for our clarinet studio recital. I am now on this piece. Alot easier, I have to agree.

I don't understand the 3/2 6/4 time signature at movement 3. Can someone explain me please?
The piece has 6 beats in a bar, but the grouping of those beats (melodically) are either 3 groups of 2 (like in the first 5 bars) or 2 groups of 3 (at bar 6). Part of the feel of the piece is the gentle alternation of these two groupings...sometimes even different between clarinet and piano (i.e. clarinet is doing 2 of 3, while piano is 3 of 2). It wouldn't make sense to change the time signature from 3/2 (when it's 3 of 2) to 6/4 (when it's 2 of 3) every few bars (in different parts). Putting both 'options' up front indicates that whichever is most appropriate is the 'option'. Remember music is fluid, like language, and the shift from 2 of 3 to 3 of 2 (and back again) is quite subtle - especially in a flowing and gentle movement like this. I hope this helps

It's marked (about) crotchet = 60 -- which is pretty well exactly what they're playing. Easy to check with a clock!
