I agree that a "cyberpunk" future as it was imagined 30 years ago is basically impossible now, as styles, politics and technology have changed in ways that cyberpunk authors could not have predicted 100% accurately. However, I think there are plenty of elements of the cyberpunk genre in the world today. Robotic prosthetic limbs that connect to your nervous system are starting to become commercially viable. I don't think the future will be as dystopian as cyberpunk is, but its still relevant.
We already live in a cyber punk world. Funny to keep reading all the comments about how they wouldn't want to live in one when they already are. Think about it. Over a hundred years ago around the turn of the century before cars, the telephone, recording devices. Imagine going back to tell some what the future is like with cars, Ipods, computers, and pollution, they would think you are crazy.
Except that we don't. Cyberpunk is far more shit than our current situation
China is pretty cyberpunk.

That being said, I still won't consider moving there for any reason.
To be honest, it doesn't matter if you WANT to live in a cyberpunk world. You already live in it.

Yes thats a very good and accurate comment. If we are to survive we must prevent such a future by uniting and stop seperating because of race, colour or creed. Lets all be freinds and help each other. That would be very cool but for some reason people crave destruction to feel better about themselves. Its a sick world!

Scanner darkly is a cyberpunk film and it is set 7 years from 2006 that makes it in 2013.
I have never seen that cyberpunk should be in 2040.

Bear in mind that most cyberpunk novels were written in 80's so 2012 = near future.

I played cyberpunk2020 with some friends last night! and this helped me a lot with the history ( I was the master) Thanks!!!.
The cyber age does'nt have to follow the exact ideas laid out by the genre. Cyberpunk is a series of interpretations describing a possible future. People spend the vast majority of their time in the web, on computers and phones so I say welcome to the Cyberpunk era :)

@1DarkMasK1 I get your point. No ou never said that, but I did. As you said, the novels are from the 80's and by that time ppl though it could be that way in 2010. but It didn't turned out that way. My definiton of cyberpunk consists of High Technology, Mega Corps and Hackers. and because of that, I don't consider our time as Cyberpunk since there is still a lot missing and thats way I said we're merely in the beginning. But since this isn't a discussion platform,we should leave it at this point

So true. I don't think any of us were born to early if we're here, now. At least we weren't Ben Franklin: "in a century too little advanced, and too near the infancy of science" to be seriously considering these things!
Nature is about adjustment. Nature will adjust to us as we have do to nature. Simple enough. Nature takes greater time to do it's changes but I guess it's fair if you think about we only living 60-70 years a generation.

I just read in Wikipedia that the cyberpunk era tends to be set in a near-future Earth, rather than the far-future settings... so.. you just have to wait.. I dont know a few decades or more? :)

When it comes to books, movies and video games I LOVE cyberpunk. In real life though I definitely would not want to live there. The kind of future I want is more like Asimov's galactic empire because I love space operas.

You are here for the time and every event in your life is a learning experience not meant to be attached or held onto. When your time is at hand than you will understand what great illusion "Life" has been.

@dharkbizkit I didn't thought the idea this way, you're right. Usually the heroes of Cyberpunk genre are against the system. But being part of it may be good in some ways, but still I think this world would be shitty to live in. Even if I love the genre and the "noir" thing about it.

That's awesome, bro! I'm going into neuroscience: brain-machine interfacing is my goal! Yeah, you know it's ridiculous seeing these shows like Star Trek etc, where fleshy humans travel the cosmos. All wrong. We'll be kickin' it in cyberspace on our long flight to who-knows-where.

I like cyberpunk but most of those stories are very dystopian. It's entertaining to read about but that isn't the kind of future I want for the planet. More along the lines of space operas like star trek or star wars would be good.

@1DarkMasK1 No, I don't because what I understand of Cyberpunk is a future like it would be in 2040, considering our current state of the (tech) art. You said robots, high tech weapons. I have to agree, but we are talking about different worlds. It's like comparing 1400 ad and 2012 because they had ships and boots already in 14th c. but you can't compare them. Let's just say we are in the very early begining of the real CP Era.

And AI will have significant impact - though not the best. AI is awesome until we lose control of it. Imagine the chaos a Vagrant AI could cause slipping in and out of networks. Or the hell that a Rogue AI could cause with launch codes.
People don't seem to grasp the concept of AI really well. Sentience means that there will be a point where our creations will act outside of our control on their own whims.

Yes it would be cool for a future like star wars or star trek, but cyberpunk is more realistic and the we won't be able to achieve that sort of future in space operas.
If been born to fucking early.. srsly.. screw this, is wish i lived in a world like this. you might say our time if great.. ok, but that time is even more great. I just feel it with every cell in my body that I belong in such a place.. but Iam stuck here... life kinda sucks sometimes :-/

@dharkbizkit I think you forgot that Cyberpunk is a dystopic world. In this one the human race has no more freedom and cyberpunks battle all their life against that. It seems exciting but it's not fun at all.

@ZakBlayde yeah indeed. It has it's major downsides. However, while most cyberpunkt "worlds" are those dystopian types, there are also the ones that are a bit brighter then others. for example Deus Ex, Ghost in the shell. While technologicly advanced, they still maintain a working society that i could live in. well from what i've seen ;)

But yes we are indeed in such a world limited freedom of speech, controlling corporation, monitored information and such. But the world has never experienced complete freedom of speech, and the world has never had more information available than now.

Real life African Cyberpunk City = Lagos, Johhanesbourgh, Cairo
Cyberpunk today? Where is cyberware. Where are corporates controlling the hole world? Where the fuck is cyberspace?! And why, WHY iphones doesnt look like stylish futuristic phone a la 1990th? Why modern computers arent stylish terminals of past days? Why the fashion is boring and sterile? Where do you see fucking cyberpunk nowdays? Even the cyberpunk future is impossible, because fashion has changed, tech hac changed, EVERYTHING's not like 30 years ago - at the age of cyberpunk literature.
i see people wishing they lived in a cyberpunk environment, which is weird. i suppose they are thinking of a utopian future environment, since cyberpunk is a life gloomy and poor, in a faceless city offering hi tech, low quality, and sometimes broken equipment.
