A few things to say about this video. 1. I'm not saying that the PS1 version is better overall. Both PS1 and PC are better than the other in a lot of different things and most of them are not really important. But that's the idea of this video : showing little detail which can be seen in one version but not on the other. Also, the next video will show things the PC version did better than the PS1 version. 2. As shown on the video some of the topics are personnal opinion and you can definitely not agree with me. In fact you can disagree with any topic if you want ! 3. This video will be the start of a little serie of videos similar to this one. Some of them to show what the PS1 did better and some other to show what the PC did better. I noted a lot of ideas but if you spotted things that should be in future videos tell me in the comments. :)
This is kind of related to my comment, but I think there should be a video comparing the playable vehicles between the PSX and PC versions, since some of the cars look quite different between versions.
Only player cars tho, everything else like traffic cars has more variety like. Its more of an issue with map looking worse and empty and some textures like headlight textures on civilian cars being worse and less coherent styticly with the game. Both are worth playing. I always liked pc OST too aswell as PS1 soundtrack. There was also Iphone remaster, but its lost to time now
4:32 It's "Hub caps", as in a cap over the hub of the wheel. 4:55 The difference in handling is because the NTSC version runs too fast - the PC version is capped at 50fps but the overall speed matches the PAL PS1 version. I never noticed the joggers on the PS1 version - very cool detail!
I also thought that the cars that Tanner is given to drive looked better in the PSX version. I wish that that version got a vehicle select once you beat Undercover, as there were some pretty neat cars that Tanner only got to drive once in the story. Like, how the ammo crate pickup truck in San Francisco resembles more of a rusty Chevy S-10 in the PSX instead of a two tone Dodge Ram in the PC version.
I always liked heavier feeling driving models. Its why i loved Driver as a kod, nfs most wanted and GTA IV. i miss games that had such feel to them in driving.
While their purpose is to be used in more emergencial situations, I guess, thinking about it, it can make some sense as separate options. Blinker meaning you intend on turning right on the next intersection, while hazard means you will stop soon to park. Or, as it tends to be the case around here, you're going to park in an active lane to talk to someone without having to find a place to park. There's a spot in my town where cars sometimes brake and turn very abruptly to park in that place, without even activating blinkers soon enough, they always do it very late. But with these rules, if they did use it sooner, it could be safer.
In Hungary, they use hazard lights when they park illegally (and they block the lane even partially) and leave the car temporarily. But to start parking on a designated parking space, people use blinkers. I don't know what is common in the USA.
@@DesterCalibra in the US, turn signals are used when a car is parking on the side of a street. But if somebody has to stop their car in a place where they'd be at risk of getting hit by an inattentive driver, like in the middle of the street or on the side of an expressway, that's usually when the hazard lights are used.
Hazards are called hazards for a reason - they are used to warn people around you that there is trouble. If you slow down early enough and use your blinkers, that's all you need to parallel park. Hazards don't indicate that you're going to park to the right, they would indicate that you're about to just stop in the lane where you are, legally or not.@@gamezonevideo282
feels like PS1/PS2 had the better grip on reflections and animations. reminds me a bit of basically no reflections on cars in GTA SA and some things aren't animated in cutscenes in GTA SA on PC (like the fish tank bubbles missing animation on PC in the cutscene of the mission "Fish in a Barrel")
PCs in the late 90s and early 2000s could definitely do all those things, they were superior to the PS1 with its hardware of 1994 and caught up to the PS2 in a year or 2, to me this seems like a lot of laziness from the devs, Rockstar made pretty poor PC ports too.
Two words: civvie pursuers. They work just fine in PS1, but in PC version they behave kinda like monster trucks and flip over constantly, sometimes when just CHANGING LANES while in pursuit! How did PC version manage to massacre them so badly? I'll never know.
the most important distinction for me is the soundtrack, it's dynamic on the ps1 version while on the pc you've got one track for the entire city you drive on, regardless of time of day or if you're in a pursuit
Another cool difference is the damage model. Talking about front and rear damage, the PC version seems to have a better model that depends also on which side you hit; so for example the hood may be more damaged on one side than on the other. In the PS1 version the damage is always the same.
I'm quite uncertain for this one. Once i played the PS1 version i assumed that the PS1 has better body deformation. But because i had to play the PC version for this video i tested it again and PC actually have better body deformation with some cars even tho the PS1 also have better body deformation for some cars as well. I think i need to test every cars possible.
I 100% agree with you on the handling. I got to play the PC version for the first time a few months back and I noticed that you can't make great turns without using the handbrake whereas in the PS1 version you can turn quickly and it makes cop chases easier.
I played both versions, no emulation and no pirating, Driver on the original Ps1, and I still own the instal disc for the PC version (the instal window uses Windows 98 assets and symbols, pretty funky lol) I love both versions, but the Ps1 version of Driver is a game that lives in my heart rent free.
The PS1 version is missing some traffic cars and cheats, so I always preferred the PC version, but still I felt there is something missing in PC, and never really dig in to find what. Good video!
PC version has a huge mistake unlike the PSX version. On PSX cops respawn delay was handled by gamemode but on PC it is handled by mission script and either they used PSX as a base for mission scripts or they forgot in general to add them. This makes it so you don’t want to get chased at all in the PC version when playing Undercover as you almost can not lose the cops once they start chasing you as they will always instantly respawn. This will make you want to constantly watch the speedometer when driving near cops and using cruise control constantly instead of constantly flooring it. On top of that they set max cops to 4. Which wouldn’t have been that big of an issue if it wasn’t for the previous reason. This issue carried over the the iOS version since they used PC as a base for that.
Agreed with all points. While the PC has a few advantages, like traffic variety, the rear view mirror and a speed gauge, overall PS1 version is far, far better. Other things PS1 did better: +Far more music variety, and unlike the PC version, the music is dynamic +Better camera, showing more of what's ahead of you rather than just behind your car which is useless +Better survival starting positions. This one is a big deal for me. The San Fransisco survival start spot in particular is legendary on PS1. On PC they just ruined it. +But the biggest problem of all on PC are those stupid, stupid concrete poles all over the sidewalk. They absolutely kill the game for me. Weaving in and out of the road is a pleasure on PS1. On PC it's a dice with death, as just clipping one of them brings massive damage and can trap you next to the road as the cop cars descend on you. PS1 is definitely the definitive version 👍
I never owned the PC version. But from what I can tell online, the one thing the PC version has over the PS1 version is an additional level in _The Mercy Mission_ (which explains the final cutscene better) and some additional cutscenes for _The Briefcase_ mission and the Ali ending.
FunFact: With GTA2 it’s the other way arround: The PC-version gots better graphics and higher details than the PS-version. For ex, on PS ain’t a train, even there’s a mission, starting at a trainstation.
Time for an obligatory 'Who would win?' said in Siri's old voice! _Who would win?_ _Several purpose-built hand assembled parts?_ *One wobbly boi?* [PlayStation 1 BIOS animation sound plays]
I like the ps1 version mainly because of the ost and the car models, but the pc version has advantages like greater draw distance and more fps, it would be interesting if they made a mod that ported all of this from ps1 to pc.
You know, I can not WAIT until OpenDriver2 has support for Driver 1 content. Will be interesting to see if it will support the PC versions environment with the PSX cars, or also PC cars. Maybe an option or mod to use either versions assets. Hoping we could also be able to get in and out of the cars now too and use the character models from PC version as they were very well modeled and animated even better than Tanner in Driver 2! So that is my dream. This game with best assets possible!
Using the blinker instead of hazard light while parking makes more sense but it's really subtle in the PC version. Overall it looks like the PS1 version is the winner, however, I prefer Tanner's car rear look in the PC version.
I prefer the handling on PC with an Xbox One controller. The higher framerate and smaller deadzone of the analog stick helps me be precise when driving. Really cool video though! It's awesome that people are still making Driver content.
I grew up with ps1 and ps2 but i don't have that much memory of ps2 apart from driv3r and gta games. To me ps1 will be always my fav console. Driver 1 and 2 is also one of my favorite game of all time.
i remember this game on ps1, it was great fun and challenging for a kiddo. and it looked great for its time. i also liked the second game, though it felt a bit more lacking.
For me, the only big complain I have with the PC version is the music. The score composed by Brimble, and the dinamic music system is a thing that I love from the classic Drivers (from 1 to 3). I even prefer (mostly) the car designs from PC version, in fact that Superfly Car is my favourite non licensed car from the entire series.
Since the game takes place in big urban centers, the PC version actually does night better than PSX, all big cities around the 80s were well iluminated as to make it safer to travel at night, yet still I prefer the PSX night mood because the sprite based lights are much more good looking than the real time based lights on the PC version. As for the blinkers, I disagree as in real life people only use their hazards for parking if they block the road, in a way to tell people they are parked blocking the road but they will soon leave, as for regular parking like in the footage you shown there, there is no need for hazard lights, its logical to use your blinkers to indicate you are stoping by the sidewalk. Anyways, still love the PSX version for its car models, idk why they felt the need to change it on pc...
I agree with everything but subjectively I like how the PC version looks at night more, even though I only ever played the PS1 ver. It's sad that the PC version was butchered so much because it could've been the ultimate edition.
I actually played Driver at night on the PC version a lot more and i really like it. But the night atmosphere, especially in Miami, is something else i find.
For #8, there's an option on the PS1 version where you can set the handling to either oversteer or understeer. Don't know if the PC version has that option.
I personally prefer the PC version, although that might just be because i grew up with the PC version. Though i think PS1 has better details like the ones shown in the video. Great video btw!

pc skybox looks better, the night sky on ps1 looks just like a day blue sky that's slightly darker and not it's own sky texture for day /night edit 4:54 it says Hudcaps instead of hubcaps
Hi, how did you manage to reach 60FPS in the Driver PS1 version? NOTE: Playing Driver PC version with steering wheel feels incredibly good, especially with force feedback, saludos!
For me PlayStation version wins. Decisively. Despite running on weaker hardware, even in 1999, it has better car design (f.e. that Chevelle a.k.a. the Miami car eats PC counterpart for breakfast - it has sharper textures and better UV mapping, for me it's iconic car), the hubcaps are better coded (on PC only those on drive axle's wheels could be lost, those on steering axle were cemented to rim, which was, and is, a bummer) and the soundtrack is more interesting and iconic (and unlike PC version, the PS1 version is diverse, with separate themes for day and night + police chases, courtesy of Allister Brimble) And speaking of iconic the most iconic track is New York at Night also used in the infamous tutorial mission at the parking lot.
PS1 always the best version forever!!! For every games (on my opinion of course) like the classics NFS games... PS1 always are the best. I never played the PC version from any game that I enjoyed on the past since I'm always a console player but even if I played a bit PC version I always will prefer console version. For Driver 1 here, I've saw already so many videos of PC and console versions and god has so much difference between them, even PC has the wonderful mods of course but console much more nostalgia and fun.
I guess it does make a bit of sence since there are not specific parking spot (in the Driver world they can drive over the white line) and they park for a very short time. I had this topic originally named just "Hazard Light" but i changed it since the parked car animation was the only time you'll see the hazard lights.
Can't agree - even when parking for a very short time. You use your right blinker to indicate that you're parking, then if you're in a bad spot and need to tell people you're not there for long, you turn on your hazards. J'espère que tu ne conduis pas!@@Weylmes

I get that on a technical level that the PC version is better looking, but there's a grain and grit to the PlayStation version that gives it a whole vibe that is missing from PC which feels a little flat and soulless. Strong case for atmosphere over fidelity.

What emulator and settings are you using to get 60 FPS on PS1? I've used both Duckstation and Retroarch, and the game runs at like 15-20 FPS.
I don't have particular settings but the recorded footage goes into a frame interpolation.
Why did they remove certain content from the ps1 to PC?
pc skybox looks better, the night sky on ps1 looks just like a day blue sky that's slightly darker and not it's own sky texture for day /night
edit 4:54 it says Hudcaps instead of hubcaps
Hi, how did you manage to reach 60FPS in the Driver PS1 version? NOTE: Playing Driver PC version with steering wheel feels incredibly good, especially with force feedback, saludos!
Frame interpolation.
For me PlayStation version wins. Decisively. Despite running on weaker hardware, even in 1999, it has better car design (f.e. that Chevelle a.k.a. the Miami car eats PC counterpart for breakfast - it has sharper textures and better UV mapping, for me it's iconic car), the hubcaps are better coded (on PC only those on drive axle's wheels could be lost, those on steering axle were cemented to rim, which was, and is, a bummer) and the soundtrack is more interesting and iconic (and unlike PC version, the PS1 version is diverse, with separate themes for day and night + police chases, courtesy of Allister Brimble) And speaking of iconic the most iconic track is New York at Night also used in the infamous tutorial mission at the parking lot.
everything
Does the pc version has any advantage? I never knew that driver has a pc version but looks like I didn't miss too much xD
Whoa, is there a patch to run the PS1 game at 60 fps?
I'm using frame interpolation.
The hazard light thing doesn't make sense, I've never seen anyone do that to park. Just the indicators like the PC version.
The night lightning at PC version seems to be a broken feature, at 4:45 of this PC gameplay video, the night are equal to PS1 version: th-cam.com/video/cH_91J9Kx14/w-d-xo.html
You can adjust the general lighting on the PC version to make it darker or brighter.
@@Weylmes Oh, i don't know about that. Some old PC games from 90s can run with graphical bugs due of modern GPUs, Test Drive 5 its a example.
I get that on a technical level that the PC version is better looking, but there's a grain and grit to the PlayStation version that gives it a whole vibe that is missing from PC which feels a little flat and soulless. Strong case for atmosphere over fidelity.
how about the other way around?
Read the pinned comment. It's planned. :)
PS1 for the win
but this is an improved version of the PS1 game, right... playing the game on an old TV straight from the console was interesting but the graphical problems were big and noticeable.
It is yeah.
how come the graphics are so good on the ps 1 version?
emulator
The Miami PC car is so ugly. What were they thinking with those blurry textures?
I like the back of the car despite the bad textures. But the front of the car is really messed up.
Damn, the PC version looks like the ugly twin? 😂 Even the main car is ugly.
I prefer PC car cause they couldn't do a proper round taillights on the PS version 😅
4:46 Interesting how the car loses it's hubcaps and even the white walls come off too.. hehehe
5:24 So the PC version is like, the GTA IV of the first Driver game?
6:52 That's the most Minecraft Steve character I've ever seen that wasn't trying to rip-off Minecraft Steve. What's with this expanded universe shit? Minecraft Steve is a time traveler? Driver 2 Tanner was the driver on the PS1 version of Need for Speed High Stakes?
how do you run driver psx on 60 fps?
Frame interpolation.
you play on duckstation?@@Weylmes
No matter how much they jog, the NPCs still look obese
Driver to me will ALWAYS be better on Playstation.
hated driver couldnt get out of the car
For a second, I thought this video was going to argue that Driver on PSX was better than Driver: San Fransico on PS3. I was about to dislike and report the video for Promoting Terrorism but it ended up being a false alarm.
graphics better too
You forgot the most important one, the PS1 has a better soundtrack
There will be multiple videos. I can't get everything into one video.
The PS1 night is better IMO its to bright in the PC.
can we disagree with you on these topics?
Yes !
Never was a fan of the pc version ps1 is the best one
Man the cars look ugly in pc version too it looks like the pc version was an export from ps1 xD
pc version is a joke
