  • Catherine McAuley was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1778. In 1824 she used her inheritance from an Irish couple she had served for twenty years to build a large House of Mercy where she and other lay women would shelter homeless women, reach out to the sick and dying and educate poor girls. The House on Baggot Street opened in 1827. To give these efforts greater stability, Catherine and her co-workers founded a new religious congregation. On 12 December 1831, she and two others professed their vows as the first Sisters of Mercy. Before her death on 11 November 1841, Catherine founded convents and works of mercy throughout Ireland and England.

    I was taught by Sisters of Mercy from grades 2-8. They were wonderful and devoted nuns. I am now a Tibetan Buddhist nun.

    They taught in primary school at Our Lady of Mount Carmel & St Patrick's on Oldham England also had Convent in Werneth with Girls school which my sister attended. Sadly it seems now shut down with many Churches which used to have very large congregations . Now only St. Patrick's remains to serve the Catholic people of Oldham . I live in South Africa which in and around Jo'burg the congregations are strong .

    Not the Sisters of Mercy I know. The “ regenerated” order which began in Alma Michigan in the 1970’s is alive and doing well. They have apostolates in many Countries beside the USA: Australia, India, Ireland,Germany, Rome etc. they work in many fields- mainly health and education.
    They exude confidence and joy.

      There are many Institutes of Sisters of Mercy in the World. Sisters of Mercy in Alma Michigan is among them. They share the same Mercy spirit, Union and Charity, and the same Venerble Mother Foundress Catherine Mcauley who was born in Ireland. I fall in love with her and her legacy.

      The sisters of mercy of Alma are not a regenerated mercy group but a completely different order.

    NUNS ARE VERY BEAUTIFUL WHEN THEY WEAR THEIR HABITS I LOVE HOW THE VEIL COMES TO A POINT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE VEIL GOING DOWN HER BACK

      That's it, you're impressed by a pointed veil ? That's really uninspired, pointless and ridiculous !

    If the Sisters of Mercy still wore their traditional habit and lived their traditional life they would be flooded with vocations.

      If you joined because of a costume you would not last. Religious must change and work in the areas they are needed

    • @ryanscottlogan8459
      @ryanscottlogan8459 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@barryegan2692 It is not a costume.It is a holy habit that is blessed when given to a novice.A habit can be altered based on the job a nun is doing.For example a cotton habit instead of wool or eliminating the wimple.That does not mean walking around in lay clothes.

    Unfortunately, the RSM's in the United States are in sharp decline. From January 2023 to October 2023, 70 sisters have gone to their eternal reward. By December 2023, that number will be even higher, probably around 100. New vocations are scarce, almost non-existent. In the past 50 years, the number of women religious in the United States (all orders, not just the RSMs) has decreased 76%. The current average age of a sister is 80. Only a handful of orders of religious sisters are doing well, the more traditional orders which have maintained their structure and religious identity.

    Sisters of Mercy just about obsolete now in most countries. WW11 changed the Church many Nuns were murdered in Germany, France, Poland and treated terribly by Communists.
