Re 19:14, I think this is a device that not only allows the rails from the swing bridge to meet the terrestrial rails diagonally (and therefore more smoothly or quietly), but-perhaps more crucially-to keep the edge of the bridge from bearing too much of the tram's weight as the vehicle crosses the bridge. I welcome correction, of course.
