I stop at Chance's grave every time I travel through Dubois.... his family keeps a notebook beside the head stone for folks to sign... I leave a trinket of some kind every time I stop. Usually a new American flag for his grave.... I sign the book and tidy up and leave.... What a truely amazing story and young man... if only there were more kids like Chance, would have no more wars.... Thank you Chance for your service and sacrifice....

This movie kills me, Chance Phelps was with 3rd Batallion, 11th Marines when he passed. My husband is currently with 3/11 in Afghanistan, I can't tell you how hard I cried watching this movie. God bless our troops

From a former Marine to my brothers here. I have a hard time watching the movie about Chance, but it does bring me hope for the people of America. I have watched it many times, and, no doubt, will watch it many more times. LCpl Phelps, rest in peace. You've earned it. Col. Strobl, it's okay. We ALL miss him.

I've done that duty to bring home my lifelong best friend that was killed in Vietnam. Toughest duty I ever did. Being a US Army Special Forces veteran, I was rock-steady the entire trip until I met with his parents. When his mom began to weep, I became a pile of emotional mush.

The movie fills my old eyes with tears. The home videos at the end are a gut punch. You see Chance Phelps is about the age of my children. They both chose a different path. They both are respectful, aware of the sacrifice of men and women in the armed forces.

Omg.....R.I.P Chance and I know this is too late but I guess late better than not at all....🙏🙏 May your family be at peace....and THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE 💯🇺🇲👍🤝 I am from Riverton Wyoming and I remember when they brought him home and that was the saddest day I will always remember. I had a friend that was a U.S.M.C and I lost her but in a car accident on the Camp Pendleton..U S.M.C Base. The reason I'm writing this today is because I seen this movie on an ad. I was told about this movie"Taking Chance" and I started to watch it but couldn't watch more cuz this war hero is from my hometown and I cried. I'm so proud of him for taking his life to save his brothers in arms. I solute him as well as the Lt.

This story reminds me of a line I once was lucky enough to hear. " It is not the number of your days, it is the days that you number." Meaning, your life can be long or short, but, it matters most what you did in those days you had. Chance is but one of a myriad of men whose bravery shines alight. "All gave some, but, some gave all." It is in these moments we as Americans can appreciate the sacrifice whether or not we understand it. Therefore, let us remember and never forget the brave, honorable men that choose this path.

When I first read the journal of colonel Strobl I was reading through a web site about a ship I was stationed on in the early seventies. The USS Tulare LKA 212. A marine and cargo transport (Amphib Fleet).
The only other military journal that has given me that much emotion was reading the journal of Dr. Haynes. The medical officer and survivor of the USS Indianapolis after delivering the bombs that ended WW II. I was torpedoed and sunk in shark infested waters.

However, I did have the honor and the privilege of being the bunk right next to his in bootcamp in 2nd Bn, Fox Co., Platoon 2008, in the summer of 2003. Chance and I found every opportunity to put his practical joke skills to great use. Here it is, 19 years after his death, and I still feel like I've been gut punched on April 9th.
