George Romero (The Grandpa of Zombie flicks) liked this movie so much that he invited Simon and Edgar to be zombie extras for a day in Land of the Dead...and Romero pretty much hated most zombie flicks because he thought they weren't original enough.

True! Romero pretty much created the horror film zombie with Night of the Living Dead in 1968, and that film was also one of the first to have a black man as a main role

I just realised you can see the movie as an allegory for life. Shaun's life was already falling apart like a zombie apocalypse, and throughout the story (his life), his parents pass away, he loses touch with acquaintances that try to help him be better (his roommate becomes a zombie), and eventually has to let go of his friend that was holding him back (Ed) in order to finally come into his own

One of the jokes younger viewers miss is when Ed yells “we’re coming to get you Barbara!” When Shaun is on the phone to his mother. That line is a take on a line from the famous zombie film Night of the Living Dead.

My favourite thing is Martin Freeman's roles getting progressively bigger as this trilogy goes on as he was getting more famous 🤣 he's like an extra in this one but has been mates with Simon Pegg (Shaun) for ages 🤣. To be fair most people in these movies are pretty well known in the UK, especially now. I think they made a point to try and get as many people back for the 3rd one who'd been in the first 2 as possible 🤣

    • @wyterabitt2149
      @wyterabitt2149 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

He wasn't really getting any more famous in the UK to be fair, his big break fame wise was the Office which had gone through 3 series and finished by the time Shawn of the Dead came out, and he had done little else of note before Hot Fuzz came out. His next jump in fame did come between the 2nd and 3rd film though.

Simon Pegg is a PHENOMENAL actor. That scene in the bar where he's miserable, he literally looks like those crying cat memes. He looks like if a new Inside Out character came out and it was just pure misery. And later on when he's in the stand-off? Perfect. He is acting with his whole heart and soul, it's so real and so visceral

14:45-14:50 "Child Locks" are usually a switch that has to be moved while the door is already open. In the lock position, the handle inside the door cannot open the door. The purpose being to assure a child in the back seat cannot open the door, instead someone has to open the door from the outside (presumably a parent or other adult who was in the front of the car before parking. So to unlock the Child Locks, someone would have to get out of the car, open the door, and move the switching lever.

I think the reason the Cornetto Triology is so good is that, while each of the films is a parody of a genre, it is also a fantastic contribution to that genre in its own right. Shaun of the Dead clearly parodies many aspects of zombie movies, but at the same time is actually a genuinely great zombie.
Hot Fuzz is easily my favourite movie ever.

There are a lot of hidden things in the movie. Example, after the breakup when Ed tells their plan for the next day, he mentions bloody mary's, then the zombie in their garden is named Mary, and she gets bloody. The end of the plan was to stagger back to the Winchester for shots. They "staggered" while acting like zombies to the Winchester and shot the gun. I also heard something somewhere about how the characters' names rhyme with their fate by the end of the movie.

They actually got the idea to do a comedy zombie film together while filming an episode of Spaced.

While this is very much a comedy, it's still a legit zombie movie, paying a huge tribute to George Romero's work.
It turns out that Romero was actually a fan of what they did, and when he had a new movie in his series coming up (Land of the Dead), he gave Pegg and Wright cameo roles in the movie as a couple of featured zombies in the background in one of the scenes ("Take your picture with a zombie").
There's some really fun documentary footage about it. My favorite bit is them reminiscing about Romero coming by and giving them some very brief direction, with Pegg saying in full fanboy mode "We've just been directed by *George Romero*!"

Like this one. When Shaun and Ed escape the house in Pete's car, the shopkeeper zombie has his hand outstretched while none of the others do. Not in a threatening way, more "You owe me 15p, remember?"

A great comedy, and a bunch of great zombie pop culture Easter eggs. For example, there’s a reason that Fulci’s is “The Place That Does All The Fish”, and it involves a zombie fighting a shark.
To be fair to their obliviousness, when you’re used to encountering people on the way home from pubs late at night, some of them probably staggering and groaning, looking ill from having too much of a night out, that just seems like how normal life (rather than undeath) goes.

I'm not a fan of zombie movies in general, but I love this one. Simon Peg, Nic Frost, and Jessica Hynes (she's the one that Shaun speaks too a few time, and comes with the army at the end) all worked on a TV series called "Spaced", in fact a lot of the cast are all great friends that have known each other for year, anyway, the reason why I bring up the show "Spaced" is that it has a cult following in the UK, and a lot of the extras (aka zombies) are fans of the show.
Also, this movie has a lot of hidden references to other zombie films, and even Ed's monologue to what Shaun needs to do to get over Liz, resembles close to what they did during the attack.
Wake up to a bloody Mary (the woman zombie in the garden has a name tag...Mary)
A bite at the king's head (lots of UK kings were called Philip)
    Etc.
Even the place that does the fish, if you look at the advert in the phone books, it calls itself that too! 😂 So worth a 4th or 5th rewatch.

O.G zomcom? What on earth are you talking about? Have you never seen Return of the Living Dead (1985) or Braindead (1992)? Braindead (US title: Dead Alive) even managed to beat Shaun to be the first RomZomCom! 😃

I’m still new to your channel and I’m happy you reacted to this, my favorite part I bring up when I’m drunk to my friends is “there’s a girl in the garden!” And they automatically respond 😂

Edgar did a really nice breakdown of the 2 One-shot routines in SOTD and it's amazing that that scene was very nearly not shot for the movie, but they snuck it in and it's so iconic today

5:00 I don’t see a lot of people talking about her. Before the trilogy, this cast did a tv series called spaced and she is one of the main characters. One of the episodes inspired them to do a zombie movie, hence this.

This is one of my all time favorites, it’s so cool to see someone appreciate all of the cool choices made by the director and actors! It manages to be both scary and funny, kinda like one of my other faves Scream.

Just noticed that zombie Barbara wasn’t that hostile…..until David shouted “Do it!” And even then it looked like she was hissing at David rather than Shaun, implying that deep down, even she didn’t like him.

18:30 dont forget it was raining the night before so the bin probably filled up with water allowing the flowers to live another day, seems quite ironic with what comes after 😅

So, David!!! Yeah, the character is an absolute TWAT! However, the actor Dylan Moran is an Irish stand-up comedian who is absolutely hilarious. Another fun little fact, both Nick Frost and Simon Pegg had guest appearances in Dylan's, BBC comedy series, Black Books, his character is the exact opposite of David, highly recommend giving the short, sweet series a watch.

The quick cut editing montage is Edgar Wright style. He uses it often, like a signature style.

This movie was Nick Frost's (Ed) first movie! He got his first part in the British comedy series 'Spaced' with Simon Pegg (Shaun) after being flatmates (roommates) with him for a long time. That comedy was slightly based on Simon and Nick's time together that role. Simon actually asked Edgar Wright to cast Nick for the role of Ed as he felt no one else could pull off the chemistry of a longtime flatmate like him. Paid off in the execution completely. 😂 🙌

I can't remember the exact wording, but the scene the day before when they're discussing the "pub crawl" is them spelling out the rest of film. Like 'the little princess, the Kings head', all refer to people in their group, "and then back here for shots" - literally

9:06 The 'apocalypse' day was filmed before the 'normal' day; Simon naturally tripped on the kerb in the former so he had to act it again for the latter.
