    My 10 year old comet Goldie passed today, he was in the late stage of dropsy. 2 months ago, people would comment, how come he looks so plump and not knowing about dropsy I figured he had just gain weight. I wish I knew to treat him then. The last two weeks, it was obvious he had internal bleeding, it was heartbreaking to see him like that. I gave him a salt bath but I knew it was too late. He would swim at the top, almost upside down. He was a carnival goldie, he was tiny when I got him and grew up to be a foot long. I buried him 2 hours ago. God rest his soul.

    This is a wonderful video of a dedicated and humane fish fan. When my aged albino goldfish showed symptoms of dropsy, this video helped save her life. Alas, years later my fish is showing the same symptoms. (I suspect her albinism means that she is immunocompromised.) I looked up this vid again and with the help of this, plus "The Truth About Goldfish"- Meredith Clawson's excellent book on goldfish care, I'm crossing my fingers for the recovery of my fish.

      @@keniag5 despite my best endeavors Babyfish started to die. She was around 13 years old so she had, all things considered, a good life. When it became clear she was dying I euthanased her humanely ie anaesthetised her with a few drops of clove oil in tank water and while she was unconscious I added a couple of bottles of vodka to the container (1 would have sufficed I think) and she died without regaining consciousness. It was a very painful and difficult thing to do but for her it was a painless and easy death. Many thanks for asking. Brian

    • @brianmontague
      @brianmontague ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keniag5 Sorry for the tardy reply. My poor fish did not respond to treatment and so I was obliged to euthanise her. It was dreadful but she had as good a death as I good give her. It's all in Meredith's book but in short, make up a solution of clove oil and warm water, add it to a small vessel that you have carefully transferred your fish to and your fish will be anaesthetised. As soon as it is clear that s/he is unconscious add a bottle of vodka to the water and your fish will die painlessly while unconscious.

    Thank you for sharing these tips!
    Really, I cant praise you enough for this. It means a lot and is so helpful (as always). Informational videos like yours are relieving. Others dont often share what they have learned! I know it isnt easy to share trial/error (with the general public), so I really can NOT express my thanks enough.
    I remember, as a teenager (before I knew any better), I bought some fish from walmart. Both fish died within 72 hours of the purchase, one about 24 hours before the other. I do believe they had dropsy, I've suspected it for years, actually.
    Seeing your video confirms what I believed, as both had all of the symptoms. I was unequipped to deal with them (being 13 at the time and reliant on my poverty-stricken, single mom of 4).
    I am an advocate against walmart fish, and any pet store selling pets for the wrong reasons, for that matter.
    I do believe there needs to be some law in place that prevents commercial pet sales to the uninformed/unequipped (or atleast without the absence of an educated care-teaching professional).

    I'm a betta person. I've had to put many down from dropsey and I wish I would have had this video a long time ago!. I always tried to treat but I guess my patience and knowledge wasnt good enough then.
    I had 2 large Fancy goldfish recently that I rescued and just rehomed bc I realized I couldn't keep up with the 2x a week water changes in a 40 gal with spiking ammonia (I had to go to fish store for water bc tap is too harsh) and I was slowly killing them and it wasn't fair. They are now in a goldfish pond with other goldfish.
    So I'm sticking with betta and smaller tanks and my new found knowledge thanks to you.
    I'm glad to see shes in a nice big tank and maybe one day shell get a friend.. If they like friends lol. 🙃

    Thankyou so much for this. I’m going to do everything I can to help him. Ugh I can’t believe it though... I’ve been keeping an assortment of tropical fish for 2 years and I still have horrible foresight with diseases, always catch them once the most obvious symptom has set in, despite hours and hours of research. Really hoping my little fella will pull through. If the pineconing isn’t gone in 2 days of epsom salt treatment, I’ll be doing the double-tank technique. On my way to find some kanaplex for the water column too, and some organic peas in case he starts eating again. This video was super helpful, exactly what I was looking for.

    Very useful. I'm so worried about my betta. It's not a parasite issue but beyond that I'm not sure. It certainly looks like dropsy. I just am so wary of using meds as they are tough on fish and sick fish as well. I appreciate your dedication and just will try to react with the information you have earnestly compiled here. I'm afraid my fish's issue is due to my over feading as water parameters/quality is, by my tests, not the issue. His diet has never been an issue for any of my other bettas. Anyway feeling like this research I"m doing is grueling but it's the only way to at least attempt to save his life. Thanks for your efforts as they've been helpful.!

    What spurs me to treat is the behaviour of the fish. If the fish will eat and swim and seems like it wants to fight, then absolutely I will try to treat, but if it seems like the fish has given up and the dropsy is severe like this case, I may not want to treat. Anyway great work. She looks much better.

    Glad you are a thorough researcher but I noticed an aquarium in the background with a critter wheel inside. From one pet lover to another I wanted to say you should look into getting a cage with better air circulation (wire cages) because it can cause respiratory issues in small rodents being in aquariums.

    Treating mine today with tetracycline (I already have it). Wasn't sure what it was and wasn't too worried... but now it's been a few days and I'm finally realizing it's dropsy. I'll consider salt if she hangs in there. I used to keep my tank brackish and never had problems.

    I highly recommend this advice 👍 I had a goldfish on the way out with dropsy , and thought give it a go, I live in Australia so couldn’t source the medication in this clip, my aquarium shop recommended Aquaria-Cycline tablets which are antibiotic , I put him in a 10 litre tub with heater and 1 teaspoon of Epsom Salts, 1/2 a tablet and water ager , an air bubble stone to oxygenate the water ( not to vigorous as he was weak ) and crossed my fingers . Every morning I scooped him and a bit of his water into a bowl while I quickly tipped out his container and gave him all fresh again, repeating the preparation, then I put him back in for another day 🤞 You slowly notice the improvement, scales flattened and he began to eat , I couldn’t get any medicated food ,I did put mushed peas minus their shell ,but he ate his regular food, his poos went back to normal and I knew he was on the mend. Thank you for all your time and efforts into compiling this video and my little goldfish says ❤️

    Hi Lori! I lost my Betta fish yesterday to dropsy, on only day two of treatment. I believe I caught it too late because it was really bad. We had him for about 2 years and seven months, plus his life at the fish store, which I heard was about a year old. After we burry him, my dad thinks I should get a new one, but I don’t know. Is it too soon?

      I know it's been a while, but are you sure you used Epsom Salt? In this video Aquarium Salt was used, which is not Epsom salt. Aquarium salt is Sodium chloride which actually draws moisture into the body and will have devastating effects to a fish with Dropsy. Epsom salts is magnesium sulphate which is a natural laxative and draws fluid out of the body.

    • @victorceniceros5461
      @victorceniceros5461 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrGreFunky That is true so what is the right way to do it you are not supposed to let the fish in Epsom salt for more than 15 min

    • @MrGreFunky
      @MrGreFunky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@victorceniceros5461 This would depend on the type of fish you have, the severity of the symptoms and the dosage of Epsom salt.
      I recommend checking out some fish forums and asking the people there, as they will know much more than I do about the correct treatment methods for your exact setup.

    You did all the right things :) ruffle pinecone scales that are dropping off is a symptom of Costia (parasite) and secondary bacteria infection under the scales (skin is infected) is one of the major problems that causes Dropsy. You seem to be really invested. I suggest you get a microscope and do a scrap to be sure Costia is gone. It will come back if not kept in check and Costia can live out of water up to weeks even dried out it can come back to life. All equipment MUST be sterilized by boiling it. Do not use any equipment that was used before unless boiled. Did Butter Relapse? or still doing well? I suggest to check out Dr. Johnsons video on Dropsy and Costia.

    My goldfish is experiencing similar symptoms….I don’t have the space or resources to set up a whole separate hospital tank, I just have a bucket that I use for epsom salt baths. Can I dose kanaplex directly into his tank? He’s the only fish in there but I have a couple snails and 1 live plant. And it’s got some rocks and decorations. I always see people use just empty tanks for treatment but that’s not really feasible for me…

    I couldn’t find your choice of measurements with the kanaplex and metroplex. Did you do 1 full scoop of metro per every 10 gallons every SINGLE day and one full scoop of kanaplex per every 5 gallon a day? That’s not what the directions on the box say to do so I just need to be sure. BLESS YOU FOR DOING THIS! Hugs!

    Hey any tips for treating septicemia? I got my moor off my local pet store and she seemed fine at first (before putting her into my main tank, she was sitting at the bottom of the bag but I thought it was just from stress) She stays at the bottom of the tank sometimes and floats off sometimes but the main tank was also stressing her out from fish nipping and over crowing so I immediately changed her into another until I can get a bigger tank for my fish ( I have 3 goldfish including my moor) in a 10 gallon tank so yeah it was super over crowded even know with only 2 fish being there. I can’t tell because she’s black, orange, white and so many diff colors that I can’t tell if she has septicemia. She does eat and swim tho but I turned her to see her belly and by her mouth it just seemed really red but again idk if that’s her normal color but it looked a bit off. I separated her into a bucket (she’s tiny) (the bucket is 5 gallons) so she has space but this is just based off of what I think I know. I need tips or help I’m scared, I have kanaplex which saids it helps in what she has.

I'm worried now cause one of them is having big belly in comparison to other and pinecone scale (dropsy), other one having long white string coming out (constipation maybe)...they don't eat (mini pellets) and mostly swim on surface. The shopkeeper also given me Fish care for bacteria fungus & secondary infectuibs, and Anti chlorine remover and water cleaner. Will it help to cure them?... please help what should i do????
