    On the ending, I felt like the ambiguity and potential of it all going wrong again gave it an extra thrill - it was triumphant but with an edge

    Saw this last week at a preview screening. Whilst the trailer highlighted the fun times had by the characters, and made their downs seem slapstick, there were both real laughs, and contrasting dark moments in this film that made it so much more that you would guess from the advertising. Extremely well acted, it is heartily recommended. Do not let yourself be put off by the subtitles folks, it's well worth catching, albeit the close and personal nature of the performances mean that it shouldn't really lose too much in transition to home viewing.

      I agree. The trailer didn't do the film justice. I almost didn't see the movie based on the trailer.

    Both laughed and cried a lot. Very touching and heartwarming moments too seeing genuine chemistry between the group as they let go of themselves and become like kids again away from societal pressures of their roles they have to play.
    The ending felt simultaneously triumphant and melancholy all at once. I sense of false hope or promise, when in fact as is the way with intoxication, short lived

    Vinterberg said he liked to keep the ending open: 'Some people see him falling. But I see him flying. I see him getting another round. I see him getting another go with his wife. That’s my mathematics.'

    As someone who’s been to rehab twice, I see the end as him choosing drink over his life and when he falls, he’s falling into the pit of alcoholism.

    Great film and something anyone from Scotland/U.K. can identify with in regards to drinking culture.
    Can’t believe they’re already planning an American remake with Leo Dicaprio

    As much as I enjoy Robbie Collins' critical breakdown, I do find he tends to give away much more of the film than a traditional Kermode review, often leaving me with less intrigue.

    • @razmataz13drums

      yeah I agree certainly with this one, he spends most of the time describing plot.. when Mark loves a movie, he'll at least be lost in how he feels, Robbie does this less so.

    I wish there was a cinema near me playing Another Round, but due to it not being a blockbuster, The Odeon near me has chosen not to show the film, so I won't be able to see it on a big screen without travelling a fair distance

    i saw this film ages ago, and I remember enjoying it, but thinking it was fairly run of the mill- except for he dinner scene at the beginnign where Mads tells his friends his emotions. Then it was nominated, then won an oscar and now everyones raving about it. I've gotta say, i dont quite get it.. They just get pissed a lot, and im just like, looks like fun, if youre them, but much like being the only sober oen at a party, IM not having fun. And my initial viewing of the end was thinking it was negative.. Then when i turned around to my friends, I was like, oh there we go, and they were like, oh, we thought that was a hopeful ending. So maybe thats it, if you like the film, liking the peoples company then you think the ending is hopeful, and if like me you werent quite vibing with it, you also didnt vibe with the end, and thought it was bleak

    I think you're giving too much credit to Vinterberg (or too little) suggesting that he's playing a grand intellectual trick on the audience. I get it with Von trier, but Vinterberg has always been a bit vanilla to me and a bit simple and doesn't seem to have that deceptive nature in him. this is not a put down. I prefer when people speak directly from their heart instead of overintellectualizing everything because of vanity. though I gotta say that there was nothing in this movie that either surprised me or provoked me. Just a nice little feel good movie. Which is fine. It just surprises me that this is the movie he earns an academy award from and which gets this amount of hype when he's made so much thought provoking stuff.

    • @Jonatan606
      @Jonatan606 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That's where the ambiguity comes into play. It's morally wrong but it helped the student in the moment so you could argue from a perspective of utility that he instated happiness in the given moment.

      @@Jonatan606 Exactly. One could also argue that anxiety is more of a hindrance on performance than alcohol
