I owned the same 06 2500 and now I have the same 2021 3500!! One thing I noticed is the Duramax engines gets better fuel mileage the more they are broken in. Your new truck's fuel mileage will increase as you put more miles on it..
It already has a little. We only have just over 11k on it now. Love it though. How has yours been?
@@JauntJunkies We love ours too. Only have about 8K we tow a 14K 5th wheel with ease.
@@tikijim4231 tows so smooth with the 10 speed.
Reason being is because the pistons are harder to move in a new engine till the rings wear down a bit and make them easier to move. Less friction = easier to move = less force means better fuel mileage.
2006 LBZ. More reliable, no def BS & a true Allison transmission.

Lbz is not more reliable the l5P engine has much stronger components. The new trucks have stronger frames and the 10 speed tows much nicer

Keep your emissions in the L5P and get back to us 2006 LBZ owners in 18 years let me know your cost to maintain. All new diesels are junk because of all the emissions crap. You can't argue that. If I wanted to I could build my truck to have more horse power than an L5P but I don't need to. The tune I have on it is enough for me. There is a reason why the older engines pre 2007 like International, Duramax, and Cummins are called legendary.
I have a 2007 Duramax 3500 4x4 dually and I would never trade it for a newer truck. I love my truck. No emissions, no DEF.

520k miles on my daily driver 2007 Silverado Classic 3500 SRW with LBZ. All original drive train with never a day in the shop. Still gets 18-19 mpg. And we pull our travel trailer with it.

I pulled a 10,000lbs fifth wheel 2000 miles in midwest back country with a 2006 3500 GMC 6.6 turbo diesel and could barely notice I was pulling half the time.

I’d take an LBZ and even and LB7 for actually working out of over any newer. The 2011 and up diesels I’ve had from all makers were money pits. My old LB7 my dad bought new and my LBZ have been very reliable.

In attempting to judge the power and fuel efficiency with the older truck, you need to consider that the larger tires on the 06 decreases the power to ground and the lift increases drag. I owned an 07 GMC and with the stock tires it was noticeably quicker than my brothers lifted and larger tired 06. You also need to consider the DEF you used on the new truck when computing the dollar cost per mile as well.

We can tow 1000+or- on a tank of def so we used very minimal in this test. The power of the 06 is noticeably less than the 22. We would personally stick with the 22 hands down but that is not saying the 06 is bad by any means.

I love my 2005 lly. We are driving from CA to TX right now pulling a trailer and a load in the bed. She just hit 250,000 miles yesterday and runs like a champ. All stock besides S&B mouthpiece and Bilstein 5100 shocks.

I added the same shocks and mouth piece to my lly lol. Also a mbrp down pipe. 4" mbrp exhaust and banks boost tube hot side. All easy bolt on kits. Big difference in the truck!
I have a 2005 LLY as well with EFI Live, AFE turbo mouthpiece, S&B intake with air scoop, PPE up pipes, AFE exhaust manifolds and boost tubes, Diamond Eye down pipe and 4" exhaust, PPE oil pan, Duramaxtuner 5-6 speed conversion with a Allison deep pan. It tows my PJ buggy hauler with my JK Jeep just fine. Got me all the way to MOAB and Colorado from California and back. I know it isn't as refined as a new truck, but it's paid for.😎
I like my 05 lly .Going on 260k miles on it.Was thinking about selling it and getting newer dmax to pull 12000 pd fifthwheel. Had new heads put on 5yrs.ago.May just add up grades.Any suggestions on stock lly.
Still low mileage for a diesel you should get another 500k miles on it!

Great video, if I can make a suggestion... please show the gauges when towing the grades and pointing the camera out the front. I can't speak for everybody but that is what I really like to see when watching towing videos. My father has a 17' Duramax and I drive a '17 Cummins. We both haul tractors, excavators and our travel trailers. Very close on all for the most part. The only real big difference is the exhaust brakes. Ram has a much better exhaust brake over the Duramax. Both trucks are very good and capable.
Thanks for watching. We will try to show the gauges it is just hard to get a good angle on them through the steering wheel while driving. Gets really shaky. I agree on the Ram exhaust brake. Our 15 Ram exhaust brake was awesome. Our 19 ford exhaust brake not do great. Seems like the Chev is right in the middle.

Great evaluation. Given the gas mileage difference, if towing the tractor use the older truck! No DEF, lower tax rate, it’s the clear winner. But towing a fifth wheel is no comparison to towing a flat bed trailer with a load or a boat. A fifth wheel is a giant parachute always creating a large drag. I know you couldn’t tow your fifth wheel with the 2500. But if you had a 2006 3500 and compared it with the 2021 3500 I think you would notice a larger difference in towing. It isn’t horsepower but torque that counts pulling. Look at 18 wheelers. The horsepower is greater but the torque difference is huge. Torque is the ability to turn the drive shaft. Horsepower has more to do with acceleration.

2015-2019 is much better looking especially the Denali and High Country 2500 series because of the 20 inch chrome wheels.

I always liked the new trucks until I paid one off. Now I really like the “no payment” truck. It sure helps that it has been such a reliable truck also, even with the high mileage.

I completely agree!!! The no payment truck is definitely the way to go. And this after I just spent $8k putting a new engine,. suspension and steering system in my 04 F150. I'm still way ahead over what buying a new one would cost.
The 06 is also a payment truck now.
Take the 06 all day. I’ve towed and owned the new trucks and yes they do well. But my 06 LBZ will outlast them they are just not built the same. The 06 has a true Allison the 2021 does not. Anytime I tow I always find myself jumping in my 06 it never lets me down.

They are not built by allison if I recall, chevy paid big bucks to have the name on them

I have an LBZ like Nate's and it's white. I love the truck, it has 440,000 miles on it and runs like new still. Those LBZ's are special, if you can get ahold of one they are worth every penny. I had to finally put a new turbo on mine because the veins were getting clogged from so much use. I use an Edge CTS3 tuner and when I put it in tow mode it uses the turbo for an engine brake which is really handy for towing. It sure makes a lot of noise and I feel like I'm driving a semi truck but it works so well pulling our 12,000lb camper. Is the LBZ in this video EGR deleted? That makes a big difference in fuel economy. Anyways great video! I love my LBZ too much to upgrade. Going to shoot for a million miles on that thing eventually. I know it can do 500k it's nearly there already,

Honest question, I'm a Dodge guy as I've owned Ram trucks since 2007. However I am looking for a tow rig as my dad is going to allow us to use his 5th wheel camper that weighs in around 11k dry. I've been so back and forth between purchasing a newer Ram with the 6.4 Hemi (my dad tows the camper with his 6.0 GMC gasser) or finding a pre-emissions diesel. How stable does your truck feel pulling the 12k pounds? Did you install air bags? I don't mean this to sound demeaning but I also felt like the early 2000s GM trucks weren't built as heavy. I found a 2006 Duramax for sale for a price that is too good to turn down. My company vehicle is a 2014 Duramax and I've been very impressed by it.
@@0611shocker Your newer trucks are going to tow it smoother. The technology and years of development certainly make a difference. However my LBZ pulls our 13k lb camper just fine. I don't tow long distances, I would probably look at getting a newer truck to tow if we were going cross country. It's nice not having the emissions issues and worrying about Def though also. It really depends on how far you're towing. I paid $9,000 for my LBZ and put $5-$10k in it. A newer one is going to cost $50k+ So it's just a matter of how deep you want to go. I know a lot of trucks with def systems end up in the shop as much or more than the older ones do. You can always go with a gasser and eliminate the def issue. They just aren't nearly as fuel efficient.

That's what makes it engage grade breaking. Also, i see he has a tuner. That would also need to be in heavy tow mode for it to engage...just an fyi

I have two older Chevy trucks with the Allison 5 speed transmissions a 04 3500 8.1 gas 265,000 miles.and a 01 2500HD 6.6 Duramax lb7. 95,000 miles. Love both trucks and the Allison transmission they will hold the trucks back with a heavy load going down steep grades I do have a 1999 Chevy 2500 6.0 gas It’s also a very good truck . I did rebuild the transmission in it . 214,000 miles. All good tow trucks. My son has 2020 Dodges with the Cummins drove them many times also are good towing trucks. My youngest son has a 2019 Chevy 2500HD Duramax and he’s really happy with it. Enjoyed your video

Came back and watched your video again. One thing that I am afraid of in the new trucks , is the def, when it goes bad it is two expensive to fix . My oldest son he will trade his Dodge in when it has about 10,000 miles left on the warranty, as he did his last truck and still get a decent price for it because of the warranty, which is all good if a person can afford to do it . I won’t even buy a farm tractor with def on it ( I have 3 tractors 40hp, 64hp, 92hp) I have a friend that has a newer tractor with def that’s under warranty the warranty is about to run out ; the def on her tractor has missed up so many times it has costed more to pay to fix the def time after time then what they paid for the 100hp tractor. That is completely uncalled for some has to be done. People can’t afford it. I have heard of people reporting spending 10,000 to 20,000 dollars repairs on the def on their pickup trucks. That’s why I will never buy one. My 2001 Chevy 2500HD Duramax lb7 only has 95,000 miles on it, and is in every good shape and is a very sharp looking truck inside and out. I get compliments all the time on it. Been told many times it worth $20,000 or more. I have been offered $25,000 for it once. I don’t drive it every day. But I do dive it every week. Being 22 years old at 95,000 miles that’s only 4,680 miles a year or 90 miles a week on the average. It gets 22+ mpg highway , 15 mpg local and city . It’s got a tow tuner and a K&N cold air breather. Estimated 375hp 600 lbs toque or more. That’s all the power most people would even need it all I need. My 04 Chevy 3500 8.1 gas with 330hp and 450 lbs of toque does great pulling my 25ft gooseneck loaded heavy
I drive a 06 3500 single wheel. And I hauled our 5th wheel horse trailer that weighed 20,000lbs no issues at all bone stock going up and coming down Donner pass.

Interesting video and comparison of the two trucks. I believe the reason your 2021 got lower mpg than the 2006 is that you didn't use the cruise control on both trucks once on the 65 mph stretch to Soldier Summit. These trucks seem to do much better on cc than not. Also, you "had your foot into it" with the 2021, which cost you mileage (which is REALLY easy to do with the new ones). They probably get the same mpg using cruise control. My truck (a 2022 2500 HD Duramax) does MUCH better with the cruise control on than if I "put my foot into it" (aka "putting the pedal to the metal" 😂😎). I have 6000 miles on mine and it averages 20 - 21 mpg with cc at 75 mph in mixed hills and flats empty, not towing (we're in the North Texas Hill Country).
P. S. - My wife spent her childhood on Soldier Summit and Thistle and has many memories of both places. 🙂

I have a 2006 GMC one ton extended cab. I also have a 2021 GMC crew cab dually that I hotshot with. The 2006 is in great shape. I decided to keep it as a backup truck.

Nice review. Lots of differences between the 2. Only complaint is you didnt use a stock height/tire lbz. Love my LBZ, liked the 21 denali my BiL has, but I could never let my truck go for a new one. Gonna have my truck buried with me when I die 😂.
A 10 spd trans will feel smooth and quick just because ratios are closer. Like the old 3 spds next to a 6 speed.

Maintenance costs over the long run will be the biggest difference the extra cost of the def and the replacement of the emissions will kill you and its not if it will fail its when and I've heard up to 20,000 bucks to replace it but if your getting a new truck every other year you might get lucky and get by without it failing

2005 LLY 381,300..original motor,original trans.Change oil,oil filter,fuel filter every 3000 miles. Change the trans fluid,and the allison spin on once a year.Just had its first major work done to it( i did the work) ARP head studs,new Bosch CP3 while i was in there,new radiator as well. Love the G80 locking rear ends,5 and 6 speed Allisons. 2019 was the last year for a true 100% Allison 2020+ trucks are not. 10 speeds are shifting/down shifting more. 10 speeds have had more problems with them vs the 5&6 speed Allisons.

I have a 2004.4 Chevy duramax 2500hd with airbags. Didn’t get a chance to tow with her yet but I’m hoping it can take a 35hp tractor and trailer!!!
I hope so because the tractor we towed is the Kubota MX 5200 and with the bucket and trailer it weighed in at 10k which is a little under the tow rating for your year. I think 12k is the rating for a 04. Depends on 4x4 and a few other things.
I've got an 06 Duramax and it has an exhaust break on it that is factory and it works with the tow haul mode, 06 was the first year to GM did that

06 did not have a factory exhaust brake. That wasn't available until later model Dmax engines. I have a 2005 LLY and had to get custom EFI Live tuning for the turbine brake in the tow tunes. Tow/haul mode extends the shift points higher to get the load moving quicker, locks the torque converter up in most gears and offers grade braking, when it downshifts after tapping the foot brake.
Lifted truck, bigger tires on the lbz. Was the rear end re geared? If not, the trans could not put the motor in the sweet spot at the correct speed.
Supposedly the edge chip helps with that. But in the end nowhere near the power of the new truck. Thanks for watching.
I love the new full size bronco. Jeep should have taken its Sahara trim & equipped it suspension wise similarly. Not every weekend wheeler needs full live Xs . Lots just cruise logging roads with pot holes. Ever try a YJ on a maine logging road??? Once was it for me lol TJ platform took the win for my purchase.

Ive had my 06 since Feb of 06. It has seface rust on the chasis very little on the bottom of passenger side of cab. Im in the Northeast. There are 244k mi on it I wont buy another diesal so Im gona keep mine till it dies. I love my tow mode it feels like an exhaust brake.

Thanks for the comparison i have a 06 3/4 ton HD Silverado LT1 crew cab LBZ Duramax First Gen, Granite Blue and i love it, bought it new, it only has 76.500 stock miles no lift it has a snug top (same color as truck) a series higher on the tires all terrain Bridgedstone A/T tires have been my go to tires. It just purrs down the road. engine / trans well taken care of but it's showing its age. i don't think i would ever buy another truck from dealer to pricey, a well maintained privately owned i would consider. Fuel mileage of course best on the Hwy 14.1 miles per Gal in town BAD! thanks for sharing.

does anyone have an idea what that silver and grey box with the screen in the right part of the video at 12:30 is, i am planning on seeing a truck next week to buy but in the photos it shows that device and from talking to the dealer its not in the truck currently and would really like to know if it was a tuner or something for a cb radio.
It is an old edge tuner chip that doesn’t work anymore.

I have an 06 duramax same as that truck allison 6 speed but I have stock tires and no lift but also have full exhaust and tunes with bilstein 5100s for shocks and a lift pump and a transgo jr shift kit plus a couple other small things. The tune has a nice tow tune that has turbo braking so that helps a ton towing larger loads and extra 60ish hp and 180ish tq help with acceleration and the transgo makes the shifts feel nice and smooth plus lift pump helps keep the frp nice and steady. The firmer shocks help tremendously with the noticeable bouncy feeling I had before and I get 16.5-18 mpg hauling a 30 ft camper that sits around 8k lbs depending on load depending on terrain or if I have to stop and go through more towns or whatever.i don't live in mountains like that area but it is all up and down hills and sharp corners and the like. I plan on keeping this truck as long as the frame stays good

@@JauntJunkies It is, all I usually have to do is fluid changes and filter changes aside from the shocks at 200k and an alternator around the same time. I will probably rebuild the trans around 300k to be able push more power for trips to the strip but I haven't had any slipping or limping of the trans yet and have about 50k miles pushing 562 rwhp and 1185 tq but I don't drive it too hard unless I'm doing 1/4 mile runs and swap to tow tune if I'm hauling anything aside from my small enclosed trailer. I thought about buying a newer one for my business but I have so much fun driving the lbz and I know how to work on it and the newer stuff with dpf and such is just extra things to worry about causing issues that I don't currently have to worry about in the current vehicle. I could see doing that once I finish tye bodywork and don't want to use what would essentially be a show truck at that point to haul construction materials and equipment around in areas where the body is bound to be damaged.

With an older truck you can modify it without worrying about warranty. I'll go with a customized LBZ over anything else on the road even brand new stuff.

I have an 06 4door hd 4x4 with level kit only in the front. Early duramax until 2017 didn't have lift pumps in the tank. This has created an issue with mine and others going into limp when the fuel is low in warm weather pulling hard. Bubbles and foam in the fuel create low pressure in the cp3 fuel rails. I installed a fass fuel system and can't tell you how much better the truck runs. Better mileage and better power all around. So if you find an lbz I highly recommend a fass system. I know there are other brands but I haven't tried them. I pull 10000 lb rv with 2500 lb in the bed with no issues now. 9.5 mpg going from desert to 7500 elevation in the mountains.
06-07 classic are the best.
with the odometer being off that much the mph would have also been off 10-12 mph. so you were going 10-12 mph faster than odometer said you were going. and with lift and tires you lost around 50 hp to the wheels. so the old truck kinda ate the new trucks lunch. according to the math

Maybe the lbz would net much better results with stock hight tires. It's like a gear change.
Good vid. The tow capacity on that truck is 7500 and 12000 with weight distributing hitches. I wouldn't trust the factory receiver with 12k on it. They're know for bending and rusting.

385k on my (bone stock) 07lbz no issues at all. while there are normal things that need replaced Ujoints, brakes, tierods ect. the thing is stupid reliable. I have no idea what you mean about other parts of the truck not lasting.

Missed the biggest reason guys like the pre-emissions diesels. Less emissions to worry about. DPF/DEF/SCR/EGR are all problems eventually.

Paying $15k to fix block emissions seems to not be a big deal for people spending $90k for a truck. I mean why we smart with money when you can go into quick sand debt to own a new truck.

I just got an 04 Chevy 2500HD with an LLY 218k miles for $12.5k, it tows my tractor much much better than when I maxed out my 04 halfton Chevy. I get 13.5mpg towing 8k #. With current interest rates and prices on new........I'm gonna stick to what I've got.

For sure the gear ratio is different. The 06 has 3:73 and the 21 has 3:43 but bigger tires on the 06 change it and the 10 speed in the 21 changes things a lot. These are just the two trucks I have access to so I compared them. Thanks for watching.
I have a gray 2007 LBZ crew cab short bed 2wd with an 18k pullrite hitch and 142,000 miles. The only aftermarket part is a FASS lift pump and wow what a difference that makes. I pull a 15,000 lb 5th wheel and travel the country in retirement. I average 9.3 mpg. I wouldn’t give it up for a new truck.

@@Nemo_IRLyes that 9.3 is while towing. I get 16-20 without towing. It depends on how much I’m on the freeway. I drove 400 miles on 20 gallons from California to Arizona once so it can get 20 on the freeways consistently.
But a tune on it and you can get better MPG.
They are great for several hundred thousand miles. Just make sure you maintain it properly, steering/suspension, drivetrain, etc. can all be maintained and serviced cheaper than trading trucks. I like the pre DEF vehicles best, I think the DEF/DPF systems reduce efficiency and reliability, we all know that diesels burn cleaner than gas engines when properly tuned, even without the "emissions control systems".

A 06 duramax has 365 hp and 650 pound feet with that edge programmer if you keep your egts under control you can add roughly 100 or more hp and 200 to 300 foot pounds

I would over my 2019 power stroke but my duramax I like way more. That being said I have not driven a brand new Ram. The Chevy is the best truck I have ever owned.

Theirs no comparison between these trucks. If you had a stock LBZ it will tow better. Climbing hills with larger tire it will takes a toll on the power. If your friend regear with 4:20 or 4:56 you will notice the power when climbing hills plus his mpg will improve also. The newer duramax has a lot issues if you use it to drive locally. The particular filter will get clog up.

These older pre emission Duramax’s are far from throw away trucks, have multiple years and generation and currently favor my 05 lly with 450,000 miles with zero issues, the failure rate with the newer trucks with more expensive parts and more computer junk, your going to be very hard pressed getting those type of miles out of a stock L5P with emissions

Love my '06 GMC Sierra 2500hd crew cab LBZ. Especially Love not having to deal with def, regens and dpf. The "true Allison" is quite nice and so is the AAM rear axle with 3.73's. Pre heavy emissions, the LBZ is one of the best you can get. The L5P is all that and a bag of chips in today's market but a "branded by Allison" in name only and displayed on the truck as it was when it had an actual Allison built trans.....as a GM guy I must say, bad move, shame on GM for some deceptive practice and shame on Allison for allowing it.
I won't do Ford but a RAM Cummins or a "refreshed" '23(?) GMC would be cool. Good video and a Bronco? Not for me, I'd rather do a Wrangler in that segment.

Nothing wrong with that, until you have an issue and you have to rely on warranty work as opposed to someone like me who does all work on my vehicles and Harley....except tires and alignment that's above setting the toe. Keep up the "good luck" & doing what works for you. I'm getting older so my future might start getting more into a warranty situation, but not for some time yet. 🙂
Btw, I installed a reverse camera on my truck and have a wireless set up for the rear of my travel trailer.....yes I like the technology aspect, I even installed remote start on my Duramax (can't live without it! Lol

The 21 has a 10 speed aswell as different gear ratio unlike the lbz

Big difference here I think you don't realize how big a difference it makes is the older truck had a lift and taller tires. This one thing alone makes the power and getting moving etc. Massively different 10 mph up the grade the tire size is huge.

Newer Diesels have to contend with SCR and DEF systems that kill the longevity of the engine. I have a 2014 diesel SUV 100k miles + and if not for my meticulous maintenance, fuel treatment and tuning, the engine would have been done.

I believe that 06 12,000 lbs tow rating is if you use a weight distribution system. I think without weight distribution, it's rated for 7500 lbs. As far as this being a fair comparison, it's just a comparison. 😎

You would be wrong. Even my 03 6.0 2500hd has a tow rating of 12k. Ive towed as much as 16k with no weight distribution crap.

@@HioSSilver1999 The sticker on the reciever states this. The maximum tongue weight is only around 750-800 lbs without weight distribution and 1000 lbs with. So no, I'm not wrong...but you keep towing 16k lbs with a reciever not designed for it, and I hope it never fails on you. The factory reciever on these years of trucks were weak, that's why GM upgraded to the 2.5" receiver and added more support to it. According to your logic, just because a fat chick can wear it, you think she should. 👌
@@GotMyChevy 12K max bumper/receiver pull with weight distribution and 7500 without. Fifth wheel and gooseneck are around 15K not to exceed 22,500lbs GCVWR. I may be off on the fifth wheel and gooseneck rating, but the owners manual should have the numbers.

@@JauntJunkies no you didn't mess up anything about the axle ratio, the 2020- current HDs change the rear ratio in order to so called match the ratio in the new ten speed Ally just to make for better mpgs and torque management under heavy acceleration while towing, which to me doesn't make sense but to keep the durability in the power train as what GM makes it to be. Rather GM give an option of 4.10 and 4.30 (max tow for 2500 standard for 3500) and maybe a 4.56 for Max tow for the 3500

Reading through some of these comments is hilarious! The amount of delusion some people have about these old trucks is almost unbelievable. I've owned just about all of them going back to '78. The '06 duramax may be good for that little tractor and light trailer, but can not legally pull any trailer I currently own. Not even my camper, and it would more than likely blow up pulling one through the mountains. It dang sure couldn't stop one loaded to 30k on an 8% downhill emergency whereas my newer L5P does it all with ease because it was made for it. The older trucks were not.. Comparing the capabilities of an '06 duramax to one of the newer L5P trucks is ridiculous for legalities alone. I'd take a newer chevy, dodge, or ford def drinking diesel over any of their predecessors any day of the week to haul a big trailer in the mountains because they are just plain better.

Thanks for watching. Just comparing what I have access to. The power plant would have been the same for an 06 3500 that is why we went with the 10,000 lbs load as to not overload the 2500. It is just hard to find a single rear wheel 06 3500 to compare. But a new 2500 would have the same or similar results.
