      Sounds about right. I’d say no just because that’s one review where the NHL generally tends to side with the goalie even though the rules actually say incidental contact is allowed outside of the crease and trapezoid, even in the case of a goal. However, it’s rare that there’s any consistency with how the refs interpret the rules. In this case I could see the refs saying well the back of his foot was still in the crease so I’m going to count that as in the crease...

    I would let goal stand. Marty went out of his way to make contact with Jokinen whereas Jokinen cannot reasonably predict that Brodeur would come out that far out of his blue paint. If Jokinen had made a line directly into or at the blue, it could be more easily argued as Goalie interference.
    As it is, Brodeur was not screened and he overskated his position which caused the contact. If anything the contact initiated by Brodeur saved some of the positioning he had in the first place giving him a fighting chance in making a save.
    Good goal *arm to center ice*

      Agreed. Brodeur was way out from his paint. In his paint they can't touch him. But outside it, he can expect to get bumped, especially when Jokinen has as much right to that space. Brodeur didn't have his position set and was as much as fault for the bump.

    • @andrewtaylor4863
      @andrewtaylor4863 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@carpetclimber4027 And to make matters worse for Marty he was reset by the time the point shot came. If the shot had come right as Marty is bumped then the goal is disallowed; no minor on the play as the contact was by accident but the question that needs to be answered was did Marty have time to get up and reset himself to make the stop and we can see that he did so the call on the ice was correct

    Steve's right about the rule about the goalie interference. Interference in the crease isn't allowed, however any presence outside the crease with interference is allowed. A good example would of been Ryan Kesler goal vs Oilers in the 2017 Western Conference Semi-Finals game 5 to tie the game showed Talbot interfered outside of the crease which resulted in the Ducks tie game and Perry's OT winner and eventually beat the Oilers in 7 games.

    I was at that Game 7. It was my first season as a season ticket holder. I counted every single minute while we had the lead in the 3rd; "OK, Only 6 minutes to go"... only able to breathe when the puck wasn't in our end. After that GWG, it was the quietest I have ever heard The Rock. We all walked out of the arena in silence; absolute & pure disbelief. It seemed like not a single Devils fan was speaking. Only a few Carolina fans who weren't even cheering cause they were as shocked as us Devils fans. I got back to my car, threw my Devils sweater in the trunk; and went home and had a pretty full glass of Johnnie Walker. I can promise, I will never ever forget that game.

    I don't think the contact from Brodeur prevented the goalie from making a save, still plenty of time to react, plus the goalie was out of the crease when accidental contact was made. If Brodeur had made the contact just as the puck was coming in, it would have been a tougher call - but unless we're splitting hairs, I call it a good goal.

    10:40 Steve summing up the entire decade so far.

  • @HousewolfDaddy
    @HousewolfDaddy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with you Steve, I think it should count. I don’t think they’d allow it on review today, they’d call it incidental contact- BUT- the rules specifically state the goaltenders privileged area is only in the crease (and was expanded to include the trapezoid behind the net”. Just because coming out of the crease helps the goalie get an advantage on his angle, doesn’t mean he should gain privilege against incidental contact. If the goalie is in the white paint, any unintentional contact should be allowed, even if they score. If a player is intentionally bumping the goalie or pushes him with his stick or something then sure, definitely either no goal for incidental contact or call interference just like you would if it was a forward knocking a defenseman down (at least if you call by the rules, which is rare).
    I’m all for protecting goalies, but that’s why they have their privileged space. They should also crack down against contact against the goalie when it is in the paint or behind the net though in my opinion. I’m okay with allowing a goal with a player in the crease if he doesn’t impact the play. However, you see it far too often where a goalie can’t make the play he wants to make, gets a pad pushed out by a stick, or gets blocked from sliding across the net because a guy is in the crease and it’s still called a goal. It’s real simple to me- crack down on calling penalties for contact instigated inside the crease, allow incidental contact outside the crease, call a penalty for intentional contact in either area. To go with it because this happens a lot, I also think they should give the goalie an interference penalty more often when he steps out of his crease to get in the way of a forechecker.

    I think it would count. The contact was unintentional and outside of the crease. Considering that it's a game-winning goal in the playoffs, and was called on the ice as a goal, it's unlikely the ref would be willing to waive it.. unless it was for the Leafs, in which case, an exception can be made.

  • @anthonycamperchioli4123
    @anthonycamperchioli4123 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    to answer the question, in today's NHL the goal WOULD count because the rule was amended to state that for goaltender interference, the goalie has to be in the crease. However, if we were to take that question and ask if that rule was not changed would it count, then the answer is emphatically no, it would NOT count. If you want a good example of that, look at the pred's disallowed goal against the panthers in April of 2018. it's a very similar situation, and the contact is much lighter than it is here.

    Game 4 goal would have counted in today's NHL.
    Contact between player and goalie was outside of the crease - check.
    Goalie had time to fully reset before the shot was taken - check.
    Goal was scored because of a deflection of the shot - check.
    Good goal.

    Steve, I think that goal from Game 4 counts in today's NHL. If the contact happened in the crease, the goal should not have counted. However, since Martin Brodeur was pretty far outside the crease and it looks like he initiated contact by getting in Jussi Jokinen's way, that goal would count.

    Marty damn near ran into Jusi or whatever his name is I agree he's super underrated and a shootout legend. I watched him in Dallas.

    ...is that a lightning-fast Calvin & Hobbes reference around 4:58?

    Absolutely it’d still count! He left the crease, got in Jokinen’s path and I would argue the contact didn’t prevent a save from being made

    That would absolutely count today. Marty should admit he didn't play that moment very cleverly, when it seems he actually wanted to have the contact with Jokinen. End of story.

    I am a Canes fan, but I still think the goal holds up today. As far as I know, incidental contact with the goalie is allowed as long as it occurs outside the goal crease, which this clearly did.

    That’s hockey baby! Eric Staal puts them up by one with less than a minute to go. From the same spot as Ruuttu scored the first goal of the game

    Not sure if it counts today, but it should. Bother Brodeur and Jokinen were moving when they collided. Why should it be on Jokinen to avoid the contact when it happens outside of the paint? Also, Brodeur collected himself in time for the next shot.

    Incidental contact outside the crease. Good goal.

    It's impossible to say if that goal would've counted with inconsistent that kind of call is
    Even as a goalie myself though I can say it definitely should count, I'd still be pissed, but it should absolutely count it's coincidental contact well outside the crease like that

    Please do the Flyers Bruins 2010 series where the Flyers came back from 3 games to none in the series to force a game 7, than came back from 0-3 in game 7 itself to win the series! Only the 4th team in sports history to win a 7 game series after losing the first 3

    In 2020, the goal would stand FOR Pittsburgh, Vegas, Los Angeles, and all Original Six teams except Toronto (and maybe Detroit). The goal would also stand AGAINST New Jersey, Toronto, and San Jose.

    My take on it is - he got bumped before the shot that went in was taken. He got over to the shot angle after being bumped. I think it would count today.
