so good. I couldn't pick a favorite steve earle song,.... but absolutely this one is at, or near the top of the list of songs that would be the soundtrack of my life. not just of his, but one of my favorite songs from anybody. he is one of american music's greatest treasures. I hope he is coping with the loss of his son, I can't imagine how that would feel. good vibes old friend.

      I'm glad you're still here.
I can't pretend to know what you've been through, but I know you're still here, and you've got something to say.
      You might not know it, maybe you do, but I believe that we all suffer through something, and we do for a reason;
And the reason is to survive.
      Share.
      And save.
You got through what you got through, not just to finish out your days just being thankful.
      No.
You got through it so you could be a beacon of hope for someone else behind you.
You got through it to inspire others.
To lead even one more out of the darkness.
I'm sorry for all you went through, but it did have a purpose.
And the faces of those you've led back from the abyss prove it.
Thank you for your courage and commitment.
      You're a hero.

I loved Steve for his music for years, too, but now I also love him as a person. In 2014 we got two big snowstorms in Jan. and Feb. Of all the hard luck, during the one in late Jan. John Hiatt was scheduled to play at the Birchmere, and we already had tickets. We had about 15" of snow, and that much is not typical so the plows were working overtime, and it was still snowing at nightfall. We couldn't even get up our hill. John Hiatt still played to a half-empty house because he *was* able to make it, so we were out the cost of tickets, (and JH's shows are $o expensive, well over $100 per seat!) In Feb, we had tickets for Steve Earle on the 13th and Rosanne Cash on the 14th. The next blizzard came on the 13th, it snowed all night and we got about 18" in total, but Steve had the consideration to cancel his show and reschedule it for Mar 13. That time, no snow. When we chatted with him after the concert, I said to him how grateful we were for him rescheduling the Feb show. And he was so sweet, he said he couldn't leave all those folks in the lurch.

I think this is a fucking great song and this album is one of my favorites. I saw him on this tour in Manchester in either 89 or 90 and I remember it to be a great gig. The album didn't do very well either in sales or critically but it was the country rock album I was looking for, a lot more rocky and edgy than his previous three albums. I met Steve a few years back when he was touring with Shawn Colvin and had him sign some of my albums. He was showing Shawn the album and saying that was a pic of him and his Grandad on the cover. I told him I thought it was a very underrated and maligned album and that was bollocks - it's a great record and he agreed - just listen to Billy Austin, Justice in Ontario, Regular Guy and others on it. I think this tour also spawned 'shut up and die like an aviator' which again is very underrated - just listen to tracks 12 thru 17 (Fearless heart to Dead Flowers) and tell me that ain't the best country rock ever.

Thus it really remarkable I retained anything at all, my memory was so severely sabotaged by the treatment. I don't know if you've heard much of Justin's stuff but my god that boy could pick AND write.. if I could recommend you a song of his it's called 'moving on' and theres a version here live from KEXP, Its one of those songs that just grabs the listener it's almost uncomfortable to watch someone battle (so publicly at least) it's most definitely a double edged sword and that becomes very apparent watching that performance '3 chords and the truth' I guess. It's not sad, its upbeat and defiant..like 'The Other Kind' which is what brought it back to my mind. Best of luck with everything man.

Some people are desperate to brag about anything. Joe Blow went through Steve's trash. And this guy drove by his house. And that guy did his maid. A real accomplishment that is so worth telling the whole world about, I'm sure.

I especially love the last verse. I totally relate to that except it isn't 2 wheels it's 4.
