They can't be the Yeti because we'll confuse the hockey team with a cooler, but they CAN be the Mammoth because we can't confuse a hockey team with a lacrosse team? Copyright office sucks just let them be yeti lol
Yeti brand actually advertises with sports teams, so it's not an issue of "something completely different is using the name," it's an issue of "something with sports crossover whose trademark actually appears on sports jerseys is using the name."
seeing toews have a successful comeback after years of sickness would be an amazing breath of hope for the millions of us who are still dealing with long covid every day of our lives.
Somehow I don't think the image of "Outlaws" necessarily suits a state where teenagers ride around on bicycles with shirts and ties and a Book of Mormom in their hand... 😏
Given how many old western films have been filmed in southern Utah, including many John Wayne movies, I think Outlaws makes a lot of sense for a Utah sports team
The Seattle Kraken pretty immediately reached out to Kraken Rum and basically have an ongoing partnership (there was a Seattle Kraken-branded Kraken Rum even before the first puck was dropped, and the "Kraken Stormy" is the best drink at CPA). It may be that the Utah ownership wasn't willing to give up enough to the other Yeti, or the other Yeti wanted something the NHL wasn't willing to give away (jersey/helmet sponsorship). "YETI" also does appear on sports jerseys (Austin FC) and has a partnership with the NFL, so there's more room for confusion than you might think.
When Yeti got talked about, I immediately thought of the coolers, so I get why that was not allowed by the trademark office or whatever it is that looks at these things. The team could have a little fun and have a Yeti cooler or mug giveaway at a game to, say, the first 1,000 fans.
The co. that makes the Yeti coolers, tankards, etc. Has 18 copyrights on their stuff. They are not going to budge on this. For a guy like Ryan Smith, who is a billionaire, his common sense on this is laughable!
Yeti is dumb name anyways. The name should have something to do with either Salt Lake City or the state of Utah. Not a Tibetan word for a mythical creature that lives in a mountain range in Asia
yeti Work a deal where Yeti coolers is a team sponsor. Yeti coolers can put their name on the jerseys and helmets at a discount. This is crazy, you will never compete selling boxes to cool things with a NHL team. Now if another company opens a cooler shop and wants to call their coolers Yeti that is a real problem.
Note about Trademark: While it's true that they can't seek trademark protection for the word "Utah" they could seek protection for "Utah Hockey Club". This is similar to "Seattle's Best Coffee" a well-known trademark owned by Nestle.
How about no. There is nothing more lame for a name than Utah Hockey Club, any of the other suggestions are better. It's a marketing nightmare, this brand doesn't just need to appeal to Hockey fans within Utah, but to fans outside of it as well. This is professional hockey, if they want to make money, and you know, stay in business, they're gonna have to do better than that. Rejections like this are common, there are work arounds, in addition, they have a list of decent names you can make a brand from already there. If nothing else, this will make them try a bit harder to find a ringer.
On the plural for Yeti, the copyright office has a point. There have been cases where individuals have tried to closely approximate a known brand's name in their business name with the intent of appearing to be that company or something similar. This has often happened in the restaurant industry with "copycat" names. As for any other variation of Yetti, the owner of the name may still file a suit on a similarity claim and they would probably win in court. I don't think the team financially would want to risk this.
So they are saying naming a team Yeti would cause confusion yet they allowed a company called Stanley to make cups? I've personally been confused once by a news article claiming Stanley Cups were stolen so opening the article I was thinking hockey to turn out it was just some beverage containers.
Stanley, the thermos maker, was founded in 1913. My guess is way back then, the standard for what was acceptable and what was not are vastly different. I mean, the Stanley Cup was awarded for the first time 20 years or so before hand.
Y'know, the Yeti company has a chance to do something really really neat here. If they speak up and say they're happy with a hockey team called the Yetis, it would be the free-est advertising in the world for them. Sponsor the team, the Yeti logo would be completely fitting on the uniform, and the excitement of Utah fans... Well. Yeti coolers would sell so hard. Mormon Church bankrolling the company. Big win. As a sidenote, if you want some more statistics: The Dallas Stars have allowed 11 goals this season within 2 minutes of scoring. That's 10% of the goals they've allowed. They've allowed 21 goals within 4 minutes of scoring, which accounts for about 20% of their goals against. Yikes.

It’s interesting the trademark office doesn’t have a problem with Mammoth considering Colorado has a professional sports team named the Mammoth. Maybe Colorado never trademarked it but find that hard to believe.
Both Mannoth and Outlaws are used by a colorado Mannoth and Colorado . The Mannoth are owed by the Avs ower. The Outlaws are owed by the previous Denver Broncos ower. I can't believe that both of those owners sue if either name is used.
I am curious about if Sasquatch, (agreeable) Snowmen or Big Foots would work in the place of Yeti. Outlaws were a name for now defunct Las Vegas Outlaws of XFL so wonder if they may not use it because of it. Mammoths might be their best option.
Im kind of glad they wont be called Yeti. The Yeti is from the Himalayas and has no resemblance to Utah or North America. Mammoth or Outlaws would be fine with me. Just dont call them the Hockey Club forever
Does Utah Hockey Club have any recourse in the courts to sue to use the name Yeti? I'm not against mammoth. I'm not against Outlaws either but the color scheme would probably have to change to more of a wild west theme.
I definitely want Mammoths! It’s a unique name and it fits so well with hockey! The logo would go hard and the colors also fit with the name! Outlaws feels so generic and played out.
Time for Utah to write a nicely worded letter to the cool people at Yeti (maybe with a license of the name and/or a brand sponsorship deal) to use the name. Then send that to the copyright office and make everyone happy.
That's funny about the tallest goal! Has there ever been a seven footer in the NHL? I don't think that would be an advantage. A shame about Yeti. I like Mammoth or Bigfoot. I'm mixed about LT possibly playing in the 4 Nations. Injuries is a part of it. And even though the Caps have the best record, I kind of like it that none of the players were chosen. I agree that LT is the reason the Caps are doing so well. Charlie Lindgren is not a bad goalie and he was the reason they made the playoffs last year. He's been inconsistent this year but has had some good moments. But without LT, the Caps would probably be competing for a wild card spot. *LETS GO CAPS!!*

Utah fan here. I’ve wanted the name mammoth from the beginning. I hope it happens!
Lol 3:13 yup i agree Yeti = 1 and Yeti = 2/+ I'd hope they wouldn't do "The Yetis" I am excited to see what The Utah Hockey Club does become :)
- Utah Big Foot ?
- Utah Squash? 😂 Sasquach?
Idk I do like Mammoths 🦣
Utah Swarm could have been cool if they wanted to do the bee thing.
My vote was for Mammoth as well
The Utah Samsquanch with the logo being Bubbles's face.
Mammoth is cool for sure. Maybe if they added another word like the golden knights have.
The Utah hockey yeti
Ok... so now that we know who the tallest goal combo is.... sooo who holds the 'shortest goal combo?
Utah Majestic Elk, Hunter, With a Nice set of Antlers on the uniforms! And when you score a Goal you would here a Elk Bugle!
I definitely want Mammoths! It’s a unique name and it fits so well with hockey! The logo would go hard and the colors also fit with the name! Outlaws feels so generic and played out.
I think Mammoth and Outlaws would be good options if they can't get Yeti.
Time for Utah to write a nicely worded letter to the cool people at Yeti (maybe with a license of the name and/or a brand sponsorship deal) to use the name. Then send that to the copyright office and make everyone happy.
Utah Hotshots. Fireman logo. Do it!
Mammoth is a good possibility. Lots of mascot crossovers in pro sports…
Winnipeg/New York Jets
LA/Sacramento Kings
NY/Texas Rangers
SF/NY Giants
St Louis/Arizona Cardinals
Any others?
I hear my favourite Blizzard has also been denied with only Outlaws & Mammoth not rejected
The name will still be Yeti. Initial filings are always rejected. They’ll negotiate a co-existence deal with Yeti and announce it when the season’s over
I'm surprised that Chara didn't get a pass on a goal from a player who's taller than 6ft6...
LOL
Everyone thinking the Arizona shenanigans would end once they got to Utah. I actually laughed watching this
Mammoth needs to be Mammoths
So no yetis and yeti, but we have the redwings and redwing boots… weird.
just watch bailey in abbotsford when the barracuda came in, hope he does good in anaheim.
Utah Missionaries
