I don't know how he ever thought it was "poppy". It's a heavy metal anthem!

The sound of the synth. The contrast of that to the rest of the song makes it.

it didn't really dawn on me, until he talked about the "riff" in "rainbow in the dark", but its a keyboard riff ("last in line" is also a keyboard riff). the production on dio's albums were perfection. you run the risk of sounding too light and poppy if you use keyboards, but he incorporated them masterfully.

I heard Rainbow in the Dark just one time on Harrisburg PA radio station it struck me as so profound beautiful and fierce all at the same time 2023 will be 40 years I've been listening to Ronnie James Dio and it all started by hearing Rainbow in the Dark One Time

Rainbow in the dark have that only great riff, and is a masterpiece, simply, and the keyboards do the right job. Rainbow in the dark is the fucking Rainbow in the dark song.

I agree with Ronnie, that the keyboard is too poppy on Rainbow in the Dark. But "I could have been a dreamer", "Mystery" and "Hungry for Heaven" (great song) are very poppy too...

Its funny when i hear other musicians complain that RJD was uncompromising and unconcerned with the other members of the band, while listening to RITD..Mystery, HFH..Dream Evil, ICHBAD etc...These songs were not done for Ronnie's pleasure ...nor did they project the image he preferred for himself...
it was to please everyone else in the band..the management...the record label.....and most of all..The Fans...
Without RITD and Mystery... and the commercial success that everyone else demanded. I dont think we would have had Pyramids and Giant Snakes and a mind blowing Lazer Show in 1984...or a 60ft tall fire breathing Dragon in 1986....
I dont see how those tours made any money at $15-20 a ticket for the show of a lifetime.

i love almost all of his music. even his poppy ones. why those? they're probably the only songs from him my dad would enjoy listening to with me. planning to find the chance lol. I'm glad he made those and especially rainbow in the dark! i have not heard a single cover of it that doesn't make me nauseous. that song truly cannot be replicated.

There's an old podcast from the Simply Syndicated camp called For Those About to Rock. They imagined everybody in the studio headbanging, getting into the riff and all of the sudden, "Beep boop boop beep beep boop boop" as Jimmy Bain hits the keyboards.
"AAAAWWWWWWW!!!!!! Jimmy! What are you doing?!?!"

Take note youngsters: Rainbow In The Dark was and arguably still is Dio's signature song. It was easily his most popular song and video in the 80's, and it was the song that launched his storied solo career. I saw Dio several times in concert before his untimely death, and every time it was the one song that blew the roof off of whatever venue he happened to be playing at the time. Unfortunately, and rather pathetically, a minority of metalheads, better known as close minded morons, have had a consistent unyielding agenda to render the song Holy Diver as his signature track online, when nothing could be further from the truth. Most classic rock stations will play Rainbow In The Dark if they play any Dio at all, and not Holy Diver. Rainbow is what sold the Holy Diver album, the Holy Diver video barely got played on MTV at the time by way of comparison. Metalheads just can't stomach anything that is more popular. That's why most of them pretend to hate the Black Album by Metallica. These idiots will probably try to tell you that Damage, Inc. is what made Metallica. Total B.S. The biggest Metallica song is Enter Sandman, and it's what made them superstars, and everyone over a certain age knows it. Similar thing with Dio. Rainbow In The Dark is his biggest song. And Ronnie himself knew it. I remember watching Dio open for Iron Maiden in the late 90's, for some strange reason the sound was cut during his performance. I think it may have actually been Maiden (this was the version without Bruce Dickinson) that did it. Dio walked off the stage, the crowd got uneasy, then Dio came back. He announced he didn't know what had happened, and said something along the lines of he didn't know how much longer he had to perform, and then he told the crowd he wanted to do one last song before they got cut off again. Keep in mind they had only been playing for about 30 minutes. They song they made sure to get in the show: Rainbow In The Dark. I remember thinking to myself......damn right Rainbow In The Dark. Don't be afraid to love a song or album that is more popular kids. That doesn't negate its greatness or importance. And it doesn't make you more "cool" to attach yourself to something that is less popular just because it might make you seem "different" or esoteric. I love Sinners Swing by Van Halen, absolutely love it. But it is not Unchained. No. And I'm not going to pretend that it is to seem more "cool". Now I see these fools online claiming Motley Crue's best album is their self titled record in 94' with J Corabi. Oh I see, the record that basically no one bought or cares about is the best? What a bunch of pathetic lying imbeciles. You can talk personal preference all you want, and that's fine, but I was there throughout the 80's, loved Dio all they way after he left B Sabbath. I love tunes like My Eyes, One Night In The City, King Of Rock N Roll, Overlove etc. But Rainbow In The Dark is THE Dio song. People need to stop trying to revise history to make themselves look "cool". You only come off as clowns to those who are old enough to have witnessed the historic truth as it actually happened.

Funny he says that about Rainbow in the Dark....saying he didn't like it because it was too "poppy". In his next album, The Last in Line, I wonder if he hated the "poppy" song called Mystery....which is much "poppier" than Rainbow in the Dark.
