All of his games are incredibly thought-provoking stories but something about Drakengard 3 just elevates it, whether it's the characters the setting or just the relationship between Zero and Mikhail the game tells a more profound story than any game I've ever played and deserves the same love the Nier games have gotten recently.

Super Robot Taisen is a great series and is probably a major inspiration for other Bamco crossover titles such as NamcoXCapcom and ProjectXZone. It's basically Mecha Fire Emblem with a massive crossover cast from 15-30 mecha shows. The one you showed is part of the OG series, which includes no licensed IPs. Are the 'Tales' games just supernaturally popular in Japan, or something? It feels as if Namco have released about 5,000 entries, most of which do not look like they were cheap or quick to make, over the last 15 years. A bit like Gust and the 'Atelier' series.
It's gotta be that, right? They don't seem too big in Western markets. I'm not mad though, it's comforting to see a series that's been around since the good old days still chugging along.

Your ps3 slim should not sound like that, either the cooler and fan are full of dust or the thermal paste is degraded, both of those are really easy to fix if you can hold a screw driver, you'll need a special security driver to remove one screw though, they are a few bucks on ebay so no big deal I guess.
The thermal paste was a common problem with the PS3 slims. Mine kept freezing, pulled it apart and replaced the dried out thermal paste and never had a problem with it again.

I love the thick atmosphere of Folklore. There are a handful of games that have managed this tone and it gets ahold of my imagination. Unique experience and hopefully not hard to get hold of these days.
If you're in the US, it's relatively uncommon to see in retro video game stores, but it's also very cheap. I got mine for $15 USD, loose. I can't imagine it's more than $30 (but I've been wrong before 😂)
I finally finished Folklore after playing the demo in 2008 and buying it for a pretty penny in 2019. I really enjoyed it at first and think it looks absolutely stunning, but I definitely got bored by the end. I think I'd prefer a spiritual successor than a remaster, because I'm still fascinated by its whole vibe.
Which reminds me, I'd like FromSoftware (the famous demonsouls creators) to go make a spiritual sucessor to their Lost Kingdoms I and II games (gamecube). The gameplay is similar to folklore and I think is a bit more smooth. But for a while there, Folklore scratched the itch I had after beating lost kingdoms.
I've only ever played the demo of Folklore, but I'm so glad it's on this list. It always fascinated me even though I never owned it. It's pretty pricey these days, and this game never had trophies, but I plan on one day finally through the full game.
Straight up, I had to stop at the super duper number mode because I couldn't justify the time sink, but I much prefer it to 4 and 5 onward dropped the ball bigly. I remember it came with a Laharl prinny plushie, and it had posable tendril things. That was so sick.

Time and Eternity looked so crazy lol like you're playing a cartoon minus the framedip White Knight Chronicles was fkn insane as well. I actually own it. The amount of stuff you could do in it is crazy
For real but only the PS2 games. Honestly, that company took a weird turn when they got to the PS3. The Atelier Iris, Mana Khemia and Ar Tonelico series on the ps2 were master pieces and achieved perfection for turn based combat but the later Ar and Atelier games were either trash or okay games at best.
Guided Fate Paradox and Awakened Fate Ultimatum feels like a shoe-in for one of those port Double-Pack things NIS have been doing for Switch and PC, but I really don't like the idea of having to re-buy Ultimatum to get a boxed copy of Paradox on something that isn't going to set my house on fire one day.
I hope they don't stop at the PS1/PS2 games, even though there's not much beyond that worth buying from them. I'd love some Guided Fate on my big boy computer.
@@Caspicum I feel like the PS1/2/P stuff is a lot less work to actually port over because the PS3's system architecture is infamously bad and all, so it might well be a factor in why NIS have kept so much of their PS3 lineup on the one platform exclusively.
Back in the day White Knight Chronicles 2 was a fucking great game, when online was working you could create your own mech farming parts to create incredible awesome and strong mechs and go online with other people who could also transform so at one point you could have like 3 giant player mechs going against giant monsters. If the same idea was implemented with todays technology it would be a great success.
Cross Edge isn't that bad if you get the hang of the combat. It feels really rewarding lining up combos perfectly. The game only really suffers if you go for 100%.
After playing stuff like Namco X Capcom and Project X Zone and... god, what's that DS Robot Taisen one with the same combat? Anyway, after playing those, I hate that I can't juggle in real time. I guess that's more a 'me' issue than a fault of the game though.
I'm glad my favorite RPGs of the time can no longer be considered abandoned. We got a new Kingdoms of Amalur, without the Rhode Island bankruptcy this time, and there's a new Dragon's Dogma around the corner
That was, without a doubt, the best review of Qoga I've seen... and not just because it's the only one. So much good stuff here. Thanks for this walk down marginal RPG memory lane. Edit: I should probably put some substance here. There are reasons for non degenerates to play Qoga... Notably some great music. The setting is also pretty interesting. You have to put up with way too much awkward dating sim/arpg hybrid to experience either, though. For a laugh have a look at the dlc they released for it.
@@Caspicum 'twas the darkest of times. Nascent HD pushed a lot of beloved series to handhelds where most of them died off or just outright killed them. And gave birth to mutants like many on the list too. I guess people are still a bit traumatized :)
It's always great to find fellow fans of Ar Tonelico out in the wild. The lack of recognition and appreciation for the world that was built for these games is sad.
I game i actually ended up enjoying at certain times. Bc it took me a while to learn the fighting mechanic was Resonance of Fate. when I finally beat it I had this feeling of "what do I do know?". I somehow felt rather accomplished when I finished it
It was a toss up as to whether or not Graces F made it onto the list. The Wii version seems *very* similar to the PS3 version, and I couldn't really consider it 'trapped' if it's on the Wii. Also, I played through WKC1 twice, once for both versions, about half of WKC2, and then mostly of Trinity as well. idk what it is about PS3 RPGs but they're extremely addictive.
For Super Robot Wars, 30 is the most readily available and generally most accesssible, but if you want an earlier one or one without the crossover element, get the fan translation of OG on the PS2, basically remasters two GBA games
The games have become way more accessible, now that the series just has an English translation even though it's not sold over seas. I've got all the entries of PS4, and each has an official English language option. Some are better than others, but it's still a nice touch.
You're exactly right. SRW30 is the most accessible. I enjoyed playing through it. I liked the ability to grind. It's only downside was the animation in combat was not as amazing or dramatic of older games liked T.
I'll never understood how annoyed at achievements/trophies some people get. The argument is always "they don't matter", an no they don't, but neither does any other goal in a videogame. It's as if a goal is in the form of an achievement it's completely pointless, but if it's a goal within the game it somehow more worthwhile.
I defo think they're a waste of time, but I used to do them too. I think I got to about 20 platinums before I got bored and stopped. They are addictive and validating for some people. For me now, I just don't have time and I see them as artificial inflation of game time, but if people want to hunt for them, more power to you.
Super Robot Wars is hard to get into cuz in a franchise of like 70+ games only like 10 are translated into English officially or otherwise. And since the main draw of these games is seeing your favorite mecha anime crossover and try to piece together a plot out of 10 different anime, you probably won’t find much in it outside the at best pretty alright srpg gameplay. That being said, the best games to jump in with are probably T cuz it’s fairly new, well liked and in english, and Alpha Gaiden because it’s in english and is generally considered one of the best. However if you’d rather a story of non anime mechs then you should play Masou Kishin: The Lord Elemental for the SNES as it has great visuals, a decent yet charming story (translated into english), and is pretty much wholly contained within its own characters and world. You could also play OGs for the PS2, as it has also been fan translated into english and is a remake of OG1 and OG2 on GBA, featuring a cast made up of original characters from the last few games all in one plotline. Masou Kishin in particular has a ton of weird mechanics but OGs is fairly well liked, especially compared to other OG games
For me, I think it was because my PC was shit and no games got ported, so I wanted stuff like Assassin's Creed II and Disgaea 3. 3D Dot Game Heroes was one of the first games I bought though, and still the best. Almost justified the entire purchase on its own.
I have not sold my xbox 360 and PS3 games yet. I still hold on to it and White Knight Chronicles was my fav game as a teenager. I basically waited years to buy the second game.
@@Caspicum lol good luck! My advice is to play on Conponent cables NOT hdmi becausr the input latency makes it impossible on HDMI! To unlock the final boss you need to own every weapon in game! Have fun!
Super Robot Wars is actually REALLY easy to get in to like yeah it's a long running series but you really don't need to play the previous games except the OG series and even then the OG only have like 3 titles so far I Think like the first 2 SRW OG in the GBA were combined into a remake on the PS2 Super Robot Wars Original Generations(which got a Fan English Translation btw), theres also OG Gaiden which is a standalone expansion to the remake, OG 2nd on the PS3 and OG The Moon Dwellers. The Mainline Super Robot Wars titles are completely standalone except ones who got a sequel like the Alpha and Z series and if you're worried by the Animes you don't know in the rosters don't worry you really don't need to watch their Anime to understand their role in the story as it's mostly original and retreads of their Anime story with just some extra dudes from other Animes mixed in. And I think this is the only crossover series that acknowledge other characters outside their source material and events will not playout exactly like their Animes because of the existence of other Anime characters. Like Shinji in Evangelion will not be a bitch and actually grew some balls because there are other people he can relate with and be a positive role models with or this character will die in the Anime but there's an option to save them because the situation is now different and stuff like that.
Tales of Xillia 2 is the best Tales game and easily one of the best games of 7th gen. The reason the 3rd axis of movement was only available when holding a button was so that the rest of the time (99.9% of the time) you can use the entire controller for arte inputs without it janking your character all over the place at the same time. The fact that they did away with arte binding after this game is the primary flaw of the Tales series and the reason they still haven't made another one worth playing. They've literally traded away full control over your characters' attacks for not having to hold down L2 for a second if you want to free run, which you may need to do 3 times in a given playthru.
I watched this whole video just because I wanted to hear you talk about Disgaea and specifically Trinity Universe. The idea of Disgaea characters in 3D is just a cool idea. But I guess now we have Disgaea 6.
White Knight Chronicles 1 was so disappointing, not only was the narrative not that great, the player character felt so tacked on. Demon Souls on the other hand I think is best out of the Souls series and has the best ending out of any Souls game despite being so simple. You actually save the world like you set out to do instead of only delaying the inevitable or becoming a minion of (insert character here). I really appreciate the look back on all of these, even if I come from the opposite perspective for JRPGs, being more into the plot and characters instead of being focused on the gameplay.
Tears to Tiara 2 is perhaps the BEST game on this list, along with Ar No Surge and Tonelico games. Tears to Tiara 2 is based on a series that originally started on the Japanese PC games aimed for an Adult audience and the series itself is more of a Fire Emblem type of Strategy JRPG without the Permanent Deaths. Beautiful Music and a loveable cast of characters, the ending theme will move you to tears as well.

I tried to play a few games for extra footage without dragging out the old hot box, but nothing ran quite as well as I needed it to.
I've got the PS3 Demon's Souls & Drakengard 3 already. Most of the other games on this list are on my radar too. From what I can see, Legasista's gameplay looks a lot like the gameplay from the Cladun series. I'd HEARD it was similar beforehand, but I hadn't seen any videos of the gameplay until now.
I know I'm a minority but I love Tales of Xillia 1 &2. Last time I pulled it out to play a new game plus the machine crashed and lost my data. Like it wasn't even corrupted it was just gone. But anyway thank you so much for the video. It's nice to see people haven't forgotten about the ps3 in any capacity.
xillia 2 is definitely my fav, ending's a real tear-jerker. my brother and I have decided to play through it again recently (we beat it earlier this year) just because we loved the combat so much.
About your point with auto heals after battles. I think xenoblade does it quite well, depending how much you grinded and which difficulty you choose of course, in the original Xenoblade chronicles i had, especially at the later parts, the felling everyone goes all out constantly.
I think the biggest tragedies of modern JRPGs are the abandonment of the Drakengard series, but also 3D Dot and Folklore, both of which had fantastic potential for more.
Super Robot Taisen(Wars) is a good series. The only 3 official OG titles in english are Original Generation (GBA), Original Generation 2 (GBA) and OG The Moon Dwellers (PS4 which needs to be imported or DL'd using a foreign account). Most of the dialogue is spent talking about the current events of the game. Moon Dwellers has a recap theater for the previous games but I found that very little needed to be explained and you can always use the encyclopedia function.
@@Caspicum The most recent game 30 is the first one in forever to get an official american release on Steam so right now it's easier to access than most of the others. Although it's like 100 hours long so it's one of those games that you have to ready to be in for the long haul.

School Idol Project's idol group μ's, lending voice work for some of the characters in the game, it even has the anime characters listed in the credits instead of the real VA's for some reason, but hey, at least it did give us some nice character songs because of that, but aside from that I dont think I have much good to say about it......

White Knight Chronicles 2 is my favorite JRPG of all time, it's fucking fantastic and nothing in any other has gotten me as hype as getting to build my own giant Knight like a Gundam and summoning it into battle whenever i want to smash my pathetic enemies with a massive fuck off hammer. Also if you take the time to unlock the custom Knight the final boss has a great change where he freaks out that your player character has one and you get to whoop his ass way easier than normal, it's awesome.

Your ps3 slim should not sound like that, either the cooler and fan are full of dust or the thermal paste is degraded, both of those are really easy to fix if you can hold a screw driver, you'll need a special security driver to remove one screw though, they are a few bucks on ebay so no big deal I guess.

Precious memories of a heavily flawed, but enjoyable game
I love the thick atmosphere of Folklore. There are a handful of games that have managed this tone and it gets ahold of my imagination. Unique experience and hopefully not hard to get hold of these days.
If you're in the US, it's relatively uncommon to see in retro video game stores, but it's also very cheap. I got mine for $15 USD, loose. I can't imagine it's more than $30 (but I've been wrong before 😂)
I've been holding on to my old copy since I bought it, but my ps3 disc drive is broken.
I hope that disgaea d2 gets a release on modern consoles in my opinion its one of the best storys in the series and the gameplay is just that good
Straight up, I had to stop at the super duper number mode because I couldn't justify the time sink, but I much prefer it to 4 and 5 onward dropped the ball bigly. I remember it came with a Laharl prinny plushie, and it had posable tendril things. That was so sick.

the ar tonelico series is so underrated... even if qoga is the worst game in the series, it has still great story and lore behind it. underrated gem
6:44 - You just earned yourself a sub
I knew being unapologetically edgy would pay off one day.
NOO WAAAY!!! I've been looking for Folklore since the late 2000s ever since I saw the trailer on one of them preview DVDs from a PlayStation magazine.
I don't know why the PS3 RPGs are rarely discussed. Well, I *do* know why, but it's still baffling.
@@Caspicum 'twas the darkest of times. Nascent HD pushed a lot of beloved series to handhelds where most of them died off or just outright killed them. And gave birth to mutants like many on the list too. I guess people are still a bit traumatized :)
The music is the one saving grace of Qoga for me. It has some of the best songs of the series.
Thankfully the first two games in the Ar Tonelico series are much more fun to play.
Also easier to play since they're on the PS2.
It's always great to find fellow fans of Ar Tonelico out in the wild. The lack of recognition and appreciation for the world that was built for these games is sad.

I really enjoyed WKC1 and 2, and Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll. Missing Tales of Graces f, the best 3D Tales imo

The quality of the content is matched only by how stale the jokes are
What an interesting combination
why everyone hate my jokes :(
I'll never understood how annoyed at achievements/trophies some people get.
So glad to see Folklore being mentioned.
Me too, tbh. There's a lot of love for it as well.
I and many others have said it before, but the PS3 has such a diverse library of games.
I keep discovering new games.

Unlosing Ranger was Legit fun as hell to play had a ton of fun maxing out my gear and tryin to grab the dark death evilman set.
Once RPCS3 finally gets gud, these titles won’t be so lost after all.

I believe you. I was surprised at how choppy RPCS3 still was, I thought we were a lot further along. All I really use it for is Demon's Souls, and that runs *mostly* fine.
What's the song that plays at the start of Megazone 23 Aoi Garland?
Honestly not sure, it was just in one of the early cutscenes for the game. I had a tough time sourcing a lot of the openers unfortunately.
I might have to just pick a random game with the most appealing visual style and jump right in then.

I'm definitely in a similar camp, but it had a few surprise hitters.
You really did not do xillia justice
What else could you expect from a pretentious smartass?
To be fair, Xillia didn't do Xillia justice, but I also admit my short playthrough and lack of thoughts other than "this kinda sucks" aren't great.
Honestly the most shocking thing about this list is how small it is. Thought there'd be way more games stranded there.
The 7th gen was a pretty dark time for JRPGs, Western ones fared okay. Look at the 360 and Wii line ups and you'll see what I mean. They had like 4 JRPGs each and the 360 had a couple ports of some Western stuff.
