I love the MDFCs. I have a sideboard of every MDFC I use in my Decks with clear sleeves and use the placeholder cards in the decks themselves. This way I just need one copy of every MDFC I use forever, doesnt matter how many decks I play them in.
The reprint comment is super relevant. Any cards that have a strong theme are hard to reprint - I regret selling my eldrazi they have shot up because there's not many places to reprint them and some haven't been reprinted at all.
Doubly so for double-faced cards, since most reprint sets do not have any at all, due to the added time and money expense of printing them. The best we can probably hope for is a Secret Lair of double-faced cards, but this will only have 3-5 of them (they may go up to 7-10 for this especially but then you just know 3-5 will be duds).
Mina & Denn Wildborn are great with MDFCs because you can return the land portion to your hand at instant speed and then either replay them as a land drop or get the utility of the front side.
I think you missed the best play of Spikefield Hazard - "if a permanent dealt damage this way would die this turn, exile it instead."!!! It doesn't need to only damage an X/1 to exile it - you can pair it up with another removal spell or boardwipe (that doesn't even have to be yours) or even after blocking something with one less power than the attacking creature's toughness (or any block that would kill it anyway) to make sure a creature is gone for good, and won't just be brought back from the graveyard later! It's much better than you think! I've taken out quite a few key creatures in decks in this way before. Basically, you always kill at least three or four creatures a game, and this lets you exile something instead of that for 1 red mana - not bad at all for a land!
i was on the fence about these guys but then they said they where pro using your brain with not shame now i love em. The dorky speech at the end got you a sub congrats.
Personally what I've been doing is counting these as spells when building my decks. I've always been playing 36-37 lands, and sometimes I got mana screwed. Now I run 2-4 of these in each of my decks, and I rarely have this problem. Feels great! At the same time, I try to be careful not too have too many taplands in a single deck, unless I'm on a very low budget, 'cause you really don't want to draw more than one tapland in your first 3 turns.
I have Khalni Ambush in Ghalta and in Hapatra. A card that's mostly a tapped Forest but occasionally trades a snake token with Deathtouch for my opponent's commander is just so goddamn fun.

Yeah these are in almost all my decks now, the fact that it's a land and spell is so good in edh. Though I really hope they get some reprints cause they could be upwards of 10+ dollars each otherwise (uncommons ones) cause they just that's good.

Real Life Agadeem's Awakening story: I was playing Muldrotha. A player board wipes, and I let my commander go to the graveyard. Everyone's like "oh he's just gonna reanimate her and rebuild faster!" My turn, I cast it for 6BBB, get back 7 creatures (commander, CMCs 5-1, and a Dryad Arbor, my 5 CMC was Yarok so I got a bunch of ETBs) then, as a total flex, play Agadeem's Awakening from the yard as my land for turn (yes it works that way). TL;DR- If you play Muldrotha, you MUST play Awakening.
I think you undervalue Spikefield Hazard so much. 1: It doesn't have to kill an X/1! It just has to hit something that is going to die. Its fantastic at breaking up recursion loops like Mike/Trike, Worldgorger Dragon, Karmic Guide/Reveillark etc. You can play it alongside a board wipe to cleanly answer a recursive threat. It basically gives all your removal kicker for a red: exile instead. And you can use it when an opponent spends a removal spell or board wipe. And even when you don't find a use for it, you only spent a single mana to hold it up, and now you can just play it as a land. Easily top 10 MDFC
Something you didn't bring up, the creatures are in competition with the manlands. I think most decks will prefer a two-color manland over a dorky mdfc creature. The exception being the Florahedron, because it doubles as ramp.
I know this is a corner case also but when someone cast Uro or something of the like Spitefield hazard just puts those cards into exile, it is a recursion hate card for newer recursion.
As someone who religiously uses both blood moon and magus of the moon in my commander decks, I completely agree! Please use more nonbasic lands friends!
Spikefield hazard should be an auto include if scuttle swarm is part of your meta. Gotta get rid of that lil bug asap and have a land that can deal with it is a must... I am stretching but still best way to use a 1dmg removal xD
I play even the bad murder MDFC in a mono-black deck. Even if it has anti-synergy with cabal coffer it is still a great card. Makindi stampede is one of the best because it’s a finisher that’s not dead in your hand, I play it in all my tokens decks. Those MDFC are just so good
I shoved as many instant/sorcery MDFC Lands in my Rielle deck as I could to pump up the instant sorcery count in the Graveyard. It works beautifully. 31 normal lands up to 35 ish with the mdfcs
Spikefield Hazard allows you to exile a creature as you or someone else board wipes. You can smack someones prime re-animation target out of nowhere for 1 red! Seems good to me.
I'm fully on board with this. I'm running jwari disruption in orvar just because at worst, I can use spellseeker to find a land-spell AND I can unexpectedly force spike someone at best. Personally I also love the interaction with bounce lands too bouncing a land to get a spell feels pretty good when youre hurting for spells.
I agree with all you’re takes except the spike field i think it’s great. If I had a instant that’s said exile a dying creature for 1 and it’s a Land on the it’s all ready pretty. And a bonus it will kill almost all of the good utility creatures.
IMO the best corner case for Beyeen Veil and Jwari Disruption is a Talrand, Sky Summoner deck. Talrand is monoblue and cares about instants and sorceries. Getting a 2/2 flying drake on top of the other effects on these spells makes them much better when you get those chances to cast them. My low power (5-6 depending on where you draw the line) Talrand deck runs all the blue mdfcs except Umara Wizard.
Bala ged recovery is the only one I play significantly more as a spell than a land, the only time I really play it as a land is if I need it for early game land drop

Beezy is absolutely right. I can confirm this. I have transcended this plane of existence. My creature type is now Human Avatar... all thanks to the Nitpicking Nerds. 😊👍🏼
Blackbloom Rogue goes into my Anowon deck. Menace increases the probability he isn't blocked, and in two colors, it does well enough. It really doesn't have a place elsewhere though.
silundi vision in my rashmi deck is insanely good. I always get something and I have 31 lands in the deck so it's always good as a land too, but even better as a rashmi trigger on opponent's turn.
I'm far from a seasoned deck builder, but in my non-cEDH Yuriko rogues and ninjas deck, I threw in a bunch of these in place of other lands because I figured worst-case, they're tap lands with a non-zero cmc for Yuriko's ability. It'd probably be better to just run more top-deck control, but my meta isn't super powerful and I'm building with what I've got for now.
@@NitpickingNerds feels great to flip a sea gate restoration for 7 or zof consumption for 6 with an early-game Yuriko trigger, ESPECIALLY with ponder in hand, but it's significantly worse if you mulligan yourself into a corner with only a couple of those biggest MDFC lands and no basics in your opener. That was just the one time, though, and it was operator error! LMAO
I tell ya, my deck runs Baral and Grand Arbiter 4 - these are fantastic with costs reduced Also, Hitting a Karoo later and pulling one of these back feels so nice
MDFCs only count as the front side. You can’t Loan out Agadeem’s Awakening. You also can’t use Steelshaper’s Gift to find Sword of the Realms, since that’s the back half of Halvar, God of Battle. Only the front side of MDFCs matters in your graveyard, exile, or when searching your library.
@@NitpickingNerds I've tried a little bit, but it feels kinda like how you describe it, clunky/ maybe slow like I'd probably spend my mana somewhere else. It's strange though, everything the card reads is something Brudiclad would really like!
The other day I copied my Blood Artist with the mdfc rogue and I ended up draining 30+ life in one rotation. Might’ve been because I brought back plaguecrafter 3 times with aurimi 😂. Anyways, I took your guy’s previous advice about mdfcs and my decks have been noticeably smoother!
I play the terrible ones in Yoriku, because cmc. While I have some doubt, I play Jwari disrption in Baraal. The plan is to loot it instead of looting a basic. Later when I play snappy and bounce it to my hand people will know I have that thing in my graveyard and they may play around it. Question is... Will they pay the one more often then me playing it tapped? ... Crap.
I play them, but i cant be bothered to CONSTANTLY swap to the other sides of the cards. It resulted in said card having a more used-looking sleeve compared to the rest of my deck, so I want to avoid unintentional stacking. That and the durability of the cards are a concern for me. In the end, I resulted to owning copies of them with my sidedeck of tokens and use them accordingly. Witht the same sleeves of course.
Right, just keep the actual card with your tokens and use a proxy in your deck, swapping in the real cards when you actually play the proxy. That's why Wizards made the blank proxy cards for you to write down the details of both sides of the MDFC(s) you're running. Whether your deck is sleeved or not, that's the way to go. It's a hacky workaround, but in paper, it's the only way unless you want to unsleeve and resleeve the card whenever you play it as a land or say, "hey everybody, I know this says Agadeem's Awakening, but I'm playing it as Agadeem, the Undercrypt and can't be bothered to flip it, so just remember that this is a land, ok?"
Couldn't agree more that these need to be in more decks. Emeria's Call has been lights out in my Emmara (the good one) deck. Drawing 8 power instead of drawing dead late game is gas, but the "protect all your non-angel stuff" is relevant in token decks.
To celebrate the switching of card-sides... what would happen if you guys switched sides on the camera :o (although the height of all your decor is built to match your respective personal heights, I'm noticing... very interesting...) As always gentlemen, keep up the excellent work!
Emeria's call has been sitting waiting in my trade binder.. and I have 35 assembled commander decks! .. never mind, turns out that I am using it now after all.
@@NitpickingNerds I double checked it. I am using it with Odric. I am pretty much using all my MDFCs except the ones in the video that aren't much worth using except specific synergies. I like valakut awakening for Grenzo and kazandu mammoth for Windgrace.
What does MDFC stand for? Mega Demonic Fungal Control? Monster Dynamite Fruity Cantaloupes? Mouse Dog Fish Cat? Next video: How many ETB tapped lands do you need in a deck? These Modal cards...Pssst It's free real-estate :P
Loved the video! What is your general opinion on cycling lands? I know you didn't rank them too high in the dual land tier list, but can't you apply similar reasoning to them as for the MDFCs? Or do they become much worse because you could cycle into another land? Have a great day, you are great! :-)
Cycling has the general feel of a spell, except the spell is a cantrip and has no definitive effect. So you can't really put a cycling land into a deck and say "this will do X" it's just nice to cycle a dead land in the late game, and yeah you could hit a land off the cycling too. They're still deece though
@@NitpickingNerds In a format that allows original duals (when they're not accessible to most players) and the battlebond lands. They'll have to take some risks in the future when it comes to land design. Fetchable MDFC would only be strong in modern and people would still prefer to fetch Shocklands instead (standard doesn't have fetclands, and legacy already has the original duals)
Once they're in your hand, you can play either side and that's what the card will do. Bala Ged Recovery is EITHER a regrowth effect or a land that enters tapped :)
So am I the outlier that really only plays the untapped MDFCs? I think a bad spell (more often than not) vs. a tapped land is something that I just want to avoid more often than not. What wins game in my play group is curving out and casting powerful spells of all ranges of mana values. The come into play tapped MDFCs hinder that a lot of the time. Not saying I don't like a few according to the deck I play (Malakir Rebirth in Felisa), but I really value playing untapped lands and playing my spells on time. Curious to hear everyone's thoughts on this perspective.
Lathiel really likes Skyclave Cleric. I like Sejiri Shelter in Captain Sisay, for all my Friends know she has to die immediately, for obvious reasons. I also can't play Malakir Rebirth on a G/W deck, summoning sickness would matter too, hahaha.
You get to play either side. So when it’s in your hand, you can either cast bala ged recovery for 2G, or play the other side, bala ged sanctuary as a tapped land. Once it’s a land it stays that way
I really like the interaction between mdfcs and bouncelands, because you can get both sides when they're relevant.
You should have that Anakin on a lower shelf so that Obi-wan has the high ground, that would be completely insane!
We actually did for the longest time but I think one of them fell and we accidentally moved it back 😂

My prayers have been answered.
These are very specific prayers you have
Pelakka goes in Nebuchadessar I think right?
perhaps!
Hey Joe, what mdfc's are you playing in your omnath deck if any?
Bala Ged and Ondu Inversion, the deck doesn’t have a lot of room for them with all the fetches
Them: play the best removal spell you have...
Me: looks at my dust covered, lonely, Armageddon.... is it time?
It's time!
I need to get them for my brudy deck also have you played/considered lithoform engine for brudy, Beezy?
I haven't, the card seems pretty clunky to me. has it done work for you?
@@NitpickingNerds I've tried a little bit, but it feels kinda like how you describe it, clunky/ maybe slow like I'd probably spend my mana somewhere else. It's strange though, everything the card reads is something Brudiclad would really like!
Spikefeild hazard is really great in Torbran deck! Basically a strictly better bolt. Really great.
When you say the good one I assume that's the 2 mana 2/2?
@@NitpickingNerds Yes, of course! Good, of course is relative; in this case, "good" means a less good but still fun Rhys.
The land face enters tap for uncommon and rare, and untap for mythics?
Untapped if you pay 3 life for the mythics
loved this video - super helpful
To celebrate the switching of card-sides... what would happen if you guys switched sides on the camera :o (although the height of all your decor is built to match your respective personal heights, I'm noticing... very interesting...)
As always gentlemen, keep up the excellent work!
That would be WEIRD I don't think we've ever done that before
Emeria's call has been sitting waiting in my trade binder.. and I have 35 assembled commander decks!
.. never mind, turns out that I am using it now after all.
Well put it in a deck!
Spikefield Hazard = An excellent way to trigger enrage for Dinosaurs
Oooo I'm loving all these cool corner cases people are presenting
Loved the video! What is your general opinion on cycling lands? I know you didn't rank them too high in the dual land tier list, but can't you apply similar reasoning to them as for the MDFCs? Or do they become much worse because you could cycle into another land? Have a great day, you are great! :-)
Cycling has the general feel of a spell, except the spell is a cantrip and has no definitive effect. So you can't really put a cycling land into a deck and say "this will do X" it's just nice to cycle a dead land in the late game, and yeah you could hit a land off the cycling too. They're still deece though
"I have like 9 decks"
I officially have more decks than Beezy! ...Is that a good thing? I have 16, I think I have a problem...
16 is also the number of commander decks I have.
I am at 9 atm, but I'll get on your level my dudes ;)
Maybe some day I'll get there!
I like most of these spells and I love the duals. I just think that they could have made the front bit of the dual lands fetchable though.
They would be so strong!
@@NitpickingNerds In a format that allows original duals (when they're not accessible to most players) and the battlebond lands. They'll have to take some risks in the future when it comes to land design. Fetchable MDFC would only be strong in modern and people would still prefer to fetch Shocklands instead
(standard doesn't have fetclands, and legacy already has the original duals)
Jwari disruption has actually saved me a couple times
That's cool to hear!
"Avoid the creatures"
You've clearly never Eladamri's Call-ed for a land.
I play spikefield hazard in my rakdos lord of riots deck. Its so good when you just need that 1 damage to an Opponent to get your rakdos out.
I love that none of them are TRULY useless :D
Umara is playable in Kumena simply because its a merfolk body he can tap and therefore still realistically a better topdeck than island.
Love all the corner cases on these!
How do these cards work
Once they're in your hand, you can play either side and that's what the card will do.
I still dont understand how to play these cards.... any help please?
What questions do you have about them?
@@NitpickingNerds How do I play them in general. Do I get to play both sides? do they flip when you pay the cost on the bottom of the card?
You get to play either side. So when it’s in your hand, you can either cast bala ged recovery for 2G, or play the other side, bala ged sanctuary as a tapped land. Once it’s a land it stays that way
@@NitpickingNerds Thank you!!!
imagine how much better Glasspool Mimic could have been, if it would copy a creature OR A LAND you control instead.
