    The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
    My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!

      First, my comments on your proposal
      Flopping:
      Agree; video checking could help, at least during the money time.
      Load management:
      Fans' statement to boycott ticket buying; teams with most involved players should receive the largest amount of money
      3points:
      Not a problem for me; this gives more chance for small and smart players to have an impact on the game. And by the way, shooting accuracy is the roots of the game (not dunking...)
      Then, here is my proposal : adjusting the bucket value according to two criteria related to the scorer: his position in the court and his position in the team.
      Guards give 3 points to their team beyond the arch and only 2 from any other position.
      Centers and power forwards give 3points within the paint and only 2 from any other position, even beyond the arch.
      Small forwards gives 3points in mid-range position and only 2 from anywhere else.
      Players position is defined before the player enters the court and can be changed during the game. A dress code is used to identify the players position ( peraps a colored sleeve).
      Let's have fun 😅

      1: Strenghen the defense - contact on purpose is no foul
      2. The Couch-Challenge only run´s out after beeing unsuccesful
      3. Overthinking Transition Take and Clear Path Foul - there should be no possibility of an disadvantage when you get just 1 FT an inbound... you can steal the ball and then because of the special rule there was only one FT ...

      I'd sit down with the sports media and demand they teach the game instead of these bogus era comparisons. The Back in my day talk has skewed the fan's perspective on the game & will result in declining revenue. The "Lack of defense" talk is overblown & ignores both skill and the complexity of offenses today. The "Physicality" talk is one of the most bogus sports fallacies ever & things like the load management talk I just don't understand, players, coaches & even owners have said the teams are making load management decisions most of the time, & even in this video you are pointing the finger at the players. I've also watched inside the NBA multiple times and Barkley will admit to not watching a game then sit there and provide commentary on it like he knows what tf he's talking about. You watch the NFL media & they're breaking down plays, pointing out holes in defenses, showing how the timing in plays caused breakdowns in the defense etc. None of this happens on these NBA shows. That stuff teaches the fans about the sport their watching & helps them understand coaching decisions & the complexity of the game. Let the NBA media tell it, players are standing around on D waiting for their turn to do offensive stuff.

      The rest of the world actually does this though. Multiple paid weeks of vacations, free holidays, and being able to easily call off work when youre even slightly ill. This is all paid. This actually increases efficiency as people come to work with 100% energy instead of slogging at 50% for most of the year. This translates to our sports. A football (not american football) season has like 45 games in a year. Back to back games is just unheard of. So players dont have to sit out games, eventhough they play for twice as long with less breaks (2 halves of 45) and no time outs

    Im not sure about the 3p line, but I would certainly make the refs call obvious travels, double stepbacks and carrying. Players get away with it a lot and it doesnt give a chance to properly play defense. Also I would allow a little more contact while playing defense like they do in the playoffs, so the game becomes more balanced, we dont need to have a 130points in every game, a competative game where each team scores around 105 points is a lot more fun to me. Also I would either extend the 3 second rule or get rid of it.

    • @_kaleemwillson
      @_kaleemwillson ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. I believe that for the first time in years the 2pt shot is actually more valuable than the 3pt shot this season as crazy as that seems. Also if you go for corner threes with an increased 3pt line, imagine how small of an area you would have to shoot in. So many players would get called for long 2’s or step out of bounds to try and make enough room for one. Only rule change I disagree with Johnny on.

    • @Homer-OJ-Simpson
      @Homer-OJ-Simpson ปีที่แล้ว +6

      1. Start calling charges on offensive players that initiate hard contact on the defender while they are moving laterally. That bully ball style has never been allowed before and it's just one of too many weapons available now.
      2. Call more travels/carrying. Even with the 2 steps plus a gather they allow today, many players take one additional step frequently. And even with how the league allows more palming of the ball, some players are going even further than the lax enforcement of carrying already allowed.
      3. Moving picks need to be called. It's rarely called and they allow way too much movement from someone setting a pick.
      4. Bring back handchecking. Maybe not the full 1970's handchecking allowed by the 90's and early 00's handchecking when they allowed a little more more contact with the hands and having one hand on the player is allowed so long as it's not an aggressive push.
      Do they need to make the 3pt line farther? With the changes above, it would be more difficult to get open 3's so that should help reduce the 3pt shots. Extending the lines runs into issues as well because of the geometry of the court - the corner 3pt shot already has limited space so you can't extend the line there.
      Below is what I originally wrote but decided to put the summary above.
      So Thinking Basketball Podcast had a similar question but it was focused only on scoring so the flopping by defensive players and resting of stars wouldn't be applicable. I believe they discussed at some point moving the 3pt line but ultimately IIRC what they supported included calling charges more often because today's players are allowed initiate far more contact than the past and which gives offensive players a huge advantage especially when you consider all the other rule changes and changes in enforcement of rules such as allowing more travel/carrying, the extra step from the gather step (now it's basically 3 steps vs 2 steps 20+ years ago), 3pt now being utilized to spread the floor, no handcheck, ,ect.. They singled out Giannis as the worse of the bully ball players -- they are initiating hard contact while laterally moving. This different tremendous from 20 years ago when Shaq and others could play bully ball but only if posting up and moving towards the basket, not on lateral (side to side) movement. The defensive player has no choice but to move sideways and then gets pushed sending him off balance? Giannis isn't the only one, Zion was called out in this video here. And lots of perimeter players do the same with pushing defensive players when laterally moving.
      A 2nd fix they mentioned was calling more travel / carrying. Even with 2 steps plus a gather they are still often taking one additional step beyond that. And the amount of palming that's allowed today can be very excessive for some players. They aren't saying to return to 90's era of 2 total steps (1 step + gather) nor 90's era of how much palming to allow, but that those that even violate today's more lax rules should be called for penalties.
      A 3rd fix was calling moving picks more often. They are much more lax on calling moving pick foul these days.
      I heavily agree on changes to the bully ball (offensive player initiating too much contact), calling more travel/carry, and moving pick fouls. I also agree on the flopping change mentioned in this video. I don't think the star players missing games can be changed and I'm okay with the 3pt change but geometry wise, that's difficult. The corner 3''s can't go any deeper. Plus I think I better solution to farther 3pt line is just make it harder on the perimeter play with the rule changes mentioned above (more charges, more travel & carry calls, more moving pick calls) but also bring back hand checking. With these 4 changes, the 3pt line might not need be moved back.

    Honestly the thing I would change most is the carrying and traveling rules by making them be more strict again. I think one of the primary reasons it is a shooter's league now is because of all the open space offensive threats can work with now. This is partially because defenders aren't allowed to be as physical but I don't want them to go back to that style. That way leads to too many injuries and a shortening of careers. So I think if you took away space from offensive players by limiting their mobility options it would allow more defense to be played. I think this would have the side effect of reducing the the 3-pointers value as well. It wouldn't be 80s/90s basketball but I think it would be a nice middle ground between the different eras.

Like these people would 100% put every star in the lineup. Overuse injuries are massive in sports nowadays, so making sure you have these players for the playoffs is way more important than making sure Lebron plays a full 82 game schedule. The regular season almost doesn’t matter anymore anyway, so they have no incentive to risk playing their best. I think you close up the playoffs to less teams and you’ll fix the load management thing more.

    There's a way to solve superstars sitting out and regular season competitiveness, and I've been thinking about this a lot. It's several things you do at the same time. First, you lessen the season to 58 games, so each team plays every other team twice, once at home, once on the road. The results of those matches carries to the playoffs, meaning say if one team won both regular season matches, they would begin the series 2-0, if each won 1, then it would be 1-1. Lastly, playoff series will be best of 9, so first getting 5 wins will win.
    This would make every regular season game exciting, as it's basically playoff games, and superstars will play in them. It also lets players play less games, so there's less injuries and feel the need to sit out and rest. The downside is there will be less total games, but compared to other basketball leagues around the world, it's actually still on the high side. Quality should be over quantity.

    - scoring in the post or from a direct offensive rebound is 3 points
    - difference between contact and fouls: too many fouls are called, breaks the pace of the game and too many free throws are shot
    - all star game: the conference that wins, has homecourt advantage in the finals

    1. Eliminate foul baiting - this has worked for the short period but they reverted it back for no reason
    2. More strict ball handling - the players today always carry the ball and travel. This has to be more strict, the attacking ball handler is too capable today. Pass the ball
    3. Three point line does not have to be exteded, but eliminate the side portions of it, that goes up to the corner. Three point should be only from positions where the line is curved today, not from the straight portions (side, corner). So there would be less spacing from every angle.
    4. Eliminate flopping the way you said it
    5. Eliminate defensive 3 secs
    6. I have no clear idea how to handle load management. At least it should be eliminated for the obvious ones where the player sits for a single away game. Also, shortening season from 82 games is very hard because it would mess with all the previous stats and records, making it basically a new era. Some players should have league permission for load management, like Kawhi who has permanent degenerative problem that gets a little bit worse every time he plays.
    7. Test players for steroid use. On a regular basis.

    1. Shorten the regular season.
    This deals with the problem of load management in 2 ways. 1, it means less physical strain because of less games, which means stars can play “more.” This also helps fans to have a better chance to see their favorite players. 2, it makes the regular season more competitive, as the W/L spread is tighter to qualify for playoffs. This incentivizes stars to play more because the stakes are higher.
    2. Make the playoffs/Finals best of 3/5 instead of 7.
    This one could be controversial, but it also helps boost competition in the long run. If teams have less room for error, they will fight harder to win. This is the same reasoning behind March Madness (single elim tournament).
    3. (As you said) Extend the 3pt line.
    Players can shoot farther than ever. Make them work for the extra point. If they can’t do it, it forces them to get the ball inside, which is ultimately more competitive and fun to watch.

    Great video. I would bring back handchecking, implement some FIBA rules like being able to smack the ball off the cylinder and have it not be goaltending and change the way offensive fouls are called. I think the offensive player has way too much of an advantage as far as being able to initiate contact and not get called for an offensive foul. Yesterday in the mavs vs suns game, luka pushed off or put his shoulder in to his defender at least a good 5 times and only got called for 1 offensive foul. I think that really needs to be changed because playing defense is hard enough as is and they already don't call a lot of carries, travels etc although they have gotten a little better this year.

    The regular season doesn't mean anything to players until after the all-star break. here are my suggestions on how to make the Regular Season more interesting:
    1. Adopt the football/soccer season system: A win gives you 3 points, a draw gives you 1 point, a loss 0 points. Yes no more overtimes. Teams meet 2x per season, 1 home & 1 away. Top 8 teams per conference based on total points go to playoffs. 58 Regular Season Games
    2. Mid season Single Elimination Tourney: All teams regardless randomly assigned to a bracket. Single elimination. Home court advantage goes to higher seed. 1st and 2nd seed gets 1st round bye. Trophy awarded to tourney winner. 4-5 games.
    3. Mid season Series elimination tourney: Tournament brackets per conference. 1st seed gets 1st round bye. 2v15, 3v14 so on. West vs East Finals. Tourney is 3 game series, home court advantage goes to higher seed. Tourney Winner gets Tropy. 8-15 games.
    All in all 78 games with 2 possible trophies to win, then after the regular season, playoff starts.
    PROS:
    Smaller teams could potentially win hardware. Teams are incentivized to play and win. Less load management. Single elimination tourney could have slaying of the giant moments, where lower seed teams could beat and progress against a better seed team. Potential Sponsoships. Key match ups matter more, since winning all 3 points gains better position in the seeding race.
    CONS:
    Might be confusing to some. Eliminated early in tourneys will give less opportunity for players to pad their individual statistics (Hence only the great ones will have better individual all time stats)
    Let me know your thoughts!

  • @cratwinterz200
    @cratwinterz200 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    Since I gave my 3 at the beginning, here’s my thoughts on yours.
    1. Flopping
    I made a more general call here. But I do agree that increased punishment + actual enforcement for flopping would be a good change.
    2. Load Management
    This one I simply don’t see how to do. Again, I agree it’s an issue that needs to be fixed, but I don’t see one that wouldn’t be taken advantage of without being too draconian. Punishing not showing up could also lead to players ‘playing’ a game where they’re subbed out after 1min of play. While more stat oriented players might be disinclined (/game numbers would drop) I still see many doing it. An incentive for playing a whole season could be interesting though, but provisions for minimum playtime would probably be necessary to solve the aforementioned work around.
    3. Extending the Arc
    I wish I put this one in, and probably would’ve had I not just used the first three in mind. Bringing the arc back so that 3pt shots produce as much as 2pters shouldn’t even be too difficult to figure out, as the NBA has been tracking shooting data for players. I personally like this idea, and have for some time.

      @@johnmarkson1998 I remember that video and honestly thought it was pretty bad.
      First, he’s outright wrong when he said that “players aren’t getter better at shooting threes” as he completely neglected shot selection. The average 3pt% stays around the same (94 shot 36.4% and at the time of the video (I’m just referring to my comment there) 36.9%). But when you compare the best in 94 the Top 10 shooters were at or over 40% vs last year the Top 25 all did that. The number of player that were shooting >=60% from 2 (the requirement to equal their production) was only 14.
      You compare shot selection and efficiency of the best and worst players from the field, what happened is that the average players moved to 3s so the main group of people shooting 2s are the best players from that range. As a result overall 2pt% goes up while 3pt% stays the same.
      The thesis was that it was the right spot because of league efficiency, while he completely neglected shot selection and actual production, which tell a different story.

    I've proposed two 3 point lines. Keep the 3 point line the way it is now but it will be moved back to a second 3 point line/penalty line if the team takes so many attempts per half. Say something like 12 attempts per half and then you will have to shoot behind the second 3 point line. The second 3 point line is known as the penalty line, and if a team shoots behind this line it doesn't go against the teams attempts of the first line. When there are 4 minutes left in each half, the the second line/penalty line will be no longer restricted and teams can take as many shots they'd like from the first 3 point line for the remainder of the half. The second 3 point line would be moved back enough where it would definitely wouldn't be an ideal shot for anybody to shoot so the corner three would be cut out.

    2. Referees would call palming/carrying, travelling (tighten up the rules to make it easier to officiate), but also have a video referee to reduce time spent on reviewing calls and clutch time possessions.
    3. The season is restructured to be more fair, eliminate back to backs and slight reduction of games played.
    4. Player contracts to get under control. ie salary decreases from a certain age, no trade clause and trade kickers only available for elite players, players that demand/force trades have some form of negative trade kicker, player health insurance with impact to team salary.
    5. Bring back more defensive minded rules.

Combine that with no quick threes (no threes until after 8 seconds into a possession). Those are more radical and I’m not sure how they would work, but would be interesting.

    From a logistical standpoint, I think they should expand the season; 82 games, but start the regular season Oct 1 and end April 30. That adds about three weeks on either end of the regular season. This also helps with travel. There's nothing that makes the distance from Los Angeles to Boston shorter, but a flight across the country is much more manageable if you have a day or two to acclimate on the other end. And, as you said, financial incentives for playing more games.
    The play-in game does nothing for me. 1 game and out works for the NFL, but it really doesn't work for any other sport. If I'm a fan of a team that went 46-and-36 and gets stuck in the 7th seed only to lose consecutive games to two teams that went 38-and-44, I'd feel cheated.
    In terms of actual play:
    - They need to call traveling more often, especially the double step-back or the slide after a pump fake.
    - Get rid of the Eurostep, as that creates too much gray area and gives the offensive player too much of an advantage, especially when the offensive player is at full speed.
    - Call fouls on the offense for initiating the contact, especially in the restricted area. At the very least, these should not be defensive fouls. How many times have we seen players with a full head of steam running right into a defender and the defender gets called for the foul because they have a foot in the restricted area?
    - At the same time, there's also the slide under. If you make no attempt to make a play on the ball, you're getting credit for being a domino. I know this sounds like I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth here, but come on! Mourning and Mutombo wouldn't have fallen on their butts in an attempt to get a foul called on Kobe... they would've tried (emphasis tried) to block his shot.

    Hmm, for me on these 3 things
    1) Flopping. Actually the 5k fine is ok for it. The problem is in it never being enforced. Enforce it the way it should and maybe do like the tech foul rule where repeat offenders eventually have to suffer 1 game suspensions.
    2) Load Management. I guess incentives would help. I dont know really how to do this one. I dont have a problem with load management per se, for teams that have wrapped a secure playoff, and rest the players in the final weeks. The problem is in it being used so prevalently throughout the early to mid season portions.
    3) the 3pt line. Would strongly encourage taking off the shackles on the defense, i think that could go a long way to solve that. And that should be tried 1st.

      @@KaineTremaine It's better than role players jacking up 40 midrange shots and missing 60% of them. A three is just a a farther away midrange shot. The role players that used to shoot long midranges just took a step back and started shooting threes. That's all there is to it

    • @KaineTremaine
      @KaineTremaine ปีที่แล้ว

      @Gabriel Nieves You're playing checkers bro.. What you're missing is the off dribble moves that only take place in the midrange. Otherwise known as "fundamentals".
      Maybe you've just never played 5 on 5 much or at all.. or you're just too young to know what actual basketball should look like.
      - Modern players are practicing/mastering the 3 point shot. I give them full credit and acknowledgement.. But the NBA need to move the line back 18" around the Arc, and keep corners the same (my option), or widen the court and push the corners out too.
      The 3 point jacking is awful TV product and eventually nobody will watch that trash.

      @gabrielnieves9974 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KaineTremaine ah, a basketball purist. i have played 5 on 5 before and your view is very outdated. players today are so good that they take pull up threes like players used to take pull up midranges in the 90s. besides, we are talking about organized professional basketball, not pick up games. Role players are not constantly taking off the dribble shots, that's a skill reserved for star players. Perimeter role players mostly catch and shoot on the offensive end and bogs either serve as a lob threat or post up presence with some of them also having a reliable 3 ball. Star players still work in the midrange and they all have elite off the dribble "fundamentals". There's no reason why role players should be shooting long midranges at 40% efficiency when they can take a step back and shoot 33% for 3 points which is statistically way more effective.

      @KaineTremaine ปีที่แล้ว

      @Gabriel Nieves You just described the Modern NBA, but that doesn't mean it's a better entertainment product.
      I hate the modern game. People aren't watching it. TV ratings in the toilet. I used to own league pass, but I can't think of one person who's bought league pass since 2018.
      - ik you hate the older generation, but you don't always have to take a dumb position just to sit as opposition.. in this case we're right, the 3 point jacking is awful, and your generation isn't filling the void in viewership.

    My change:
    1. If a player uses free agency or demnded a trade, the maximum amount of salary of the team he will go to should only offer 3/4 of his previous one.
    2. Remove the 3 second rule. It doesn't matter anyway since everyone is shooting from the outside.
    3. Flopping should be fined expensively, with increasing numbers in each offense and a 2 suspension in the third.
    4. No play, no pay. Salary is based onhow often you are on the court.

  • @carnek
    @carnek ปีที่แล้ว +2

    They can either remove the three second to give centers their power back or introduce a similar rule outside the three point line, so that you can't just wait and shoot. Flop is easy to fight they just need to apply the rules. The hard thing is load management...no easy solution there imho

    • @KaineTremaine
      @KaineTremaine ปีที่แล้ว

      Fix load management by allowing rest in home games, not road games.
      Incentive total games played by minimum number of games played for All Star selections, All NBA selections, MVP etc.

    Rather than extending the 3 point line I really like the idea of taking the wing 3 point line all the way to the out of bounds line and eliminating the corner 3. That would shake up the spacing and overall coaching schemes on both ends of the ball

    2. Change the format of the play in tournament

    I would
    1. Get rid of the offensive and defensive 3 second violation.
    2. Shorten the season to 58 games by making teams play every team twice. This also makes every team have the same strength of schedule.
    3. Change the format for playoffs. Instead of having the top 8 teams from each conference, the playoffs would just have the teams with the 16 best records.
    4. Change the All star break. Eliminate the dunk contest, three point contest, and skills challenge. Replace it by having the All Star teams play a best of 3 series with one day off in between the games. After the last game three awards will be voted on: All Star MVP, All Star Defensive Player, and All Star 6th Man. The winner of each award will get $1 million. Also get rid of the target score for the 4th quarter
    I had something else but point 2 solves it in a better way

    1. Get rid of gather step. All it causes is too many travels and even journeys that refs are uncertain to whistle.
    2. No defensive 3 seconds violation and allow hand checking. I heard some interview with players that think that due to lack of the contact between defender and offensive player, the amount of serious injuries has risen.
    3. Flopping should be punished with fouls just as you've mentioned. This will make players think twice before they try to act like soccer players, and the amount of whining could be reduced.
    I would also suggest to implement some safety measure for management in case of any player sign supermax contract and start to force himself out of the team.

    I would eliminate the defensive 3 seconds, and change offensive to 5 seconds. I would also widen the court to make the corner 3 as far of a distance as the top of the key. That’ll create more spacing, but eliminate an easier chance at 3s. I would add stipulations to contracts that encourage players to play more games, and penalize them for not playing. Also penalize them for flopping. I would also crack down on carrying and ball manipulation that a lot of the “best” ball handlers in the game use regularly to get an advantage on the defense.

    My dream list
    1. Bring back handchecking and tough defense
    2. Reduce the number of games to 60-70 games: this will reduce load management
    3. Flopping is an automatic flagrant 2
    4. Get rid of the 3 second violation rule
    5. Reduce shot clock to 20 seconds
    6. Reduce the number of fouls to 5 from 6
    7. Opposing team gets 2 free throws and possession for any flopping fouls
    8. Copy goaltending rule from FIBA

    Respectfully, Adam Silver is not the boss of the NBA. He works for the owners. If they want their star players to rest/load manage, that’s what’ll happen. He won’t-and cant-overrule them on that. I’m sure there’s a reason why he hasn’t “enforced” the flopping or traveling rules as vigorously as some would want. Many of these owners’ star players benefit from the rules as they are. Even alterations to the on court competition stuff like extending the three point line would be the subject of immense debate with the owners/teams. This is all far bigger than Adam Silver.

    Here is the one great idea to solve the tanking problem. Have playoff style tournament for the bottom 14 teams (I would increase the total team to 32 to match 16 bottom teams) and duke it out to get first pick. Runner-up gets 2nd pick and 3rd and 4th place team will have to duke it out for 3rd and 4th pick. That way, only the worthy team will get a franchise player. So for the worst team in the NBA who will lose out in the first round, well sucks to be them which will force them to get better without lazy tanking. Also, tanking for first picks rarely work for a championship runs anyway.

    1st. One free throw attempt on ALL fouls. For example. If you're fouled on a three point attempt, you get one shot worth three points, keeps the tempo up
    2nd. Start calling carrying & traveling. It's too easy to score points.
    3rd. The team with best record that missed the playoffs gets the first pick in the draft, and give players less money based on load management.

  • @8urvett
    @8urvett ปีที่แล้ว

    I would bring back Handchecking, eliminate the 3 sec violation, fine the team for Load Mgmt, keep the same distance 3pt arc. Enforce the 10 sec FT limit. Giannis sometimes takes 12+ secs and nothing is said. Refs should review more crucial or questionable calls in the last 2 minutes of the game. There’s been too many bad or missed calls by the Refs this season.

  • @newadarirull
    @newadarirull ปีที่แล้ว

    I would erase the corner three, and leave the arc ending on the sideline, so there is less space for three point shooters around.
    Also, the defensive three seconds would go down the toilet and we would stop seeing the open lane again and again and again.
    That would make the players more specialized, unique, and elite at how they break defenses.

    I agree 100% with the first 2. Those suggestions are exactly what I was thinking. However if you extend the 3 point line, you would have to extend the corner 3s. But it’s impossible because those lines are damn near out of bounds. You would have to increase the size of the court all together to make that work. Great video though.
