      When snakehead fishing i use the Kokatat Hydrus Launch Socks as my waterproof base all year round. what goes under and over them depends on the season. The hottest part of the summer i only have these with crocs that keep my feet surprisingly cool. I use wool socks and 8mm neoprene boots with these in cold water.

Just go anywhere in the Potomac River tributaries south of DC and you should be able to catch yourself some snakeheads! I suggest you give Mattawoman Creek a try since it is a good snakehead river.

    When you said you don't use plastic trailers on your chatterbaits do you mean you pull the plastic tentacles that come with the lures out or do you mean you don't add any kind of plastic swimbaits or crawfish on them?
    Also, how would you be able to cast if you don't use any weight on your hook for the swimbait? Or did I miss interpret what you mean? If you do use weight do you prefer a jighead with an open hook or do you prefer the weighted EWG hook? Thanks for this upload buddy! This gives me some ideas to start targeting snakeheads!

    • @MDYakFishing
      @MDYakFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just don’t add anything to the chatter baits and use them exactly as they come out of the box.
      The weight of the swimbait is enough to cast well if you are using spinning reels with lighter test line. I generally use no weight but i’ll use 1/16 oz if i feel i need to.

    You’re the only guy I see saying medium rod for snakehead. I just got a medium power mojo yak,fast action. Will this be good for snakehead?

    • @MDYakFishing
      @MDYakFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've caught snakehead on light action rods. The lure being used is an important element of rod selection. If you are fishing a 2 hook hollow body frog that has a thick wire, medium is as light as I would go for adequate hook penetration. I use light wire hollow body double hooks so medium works really well. If I personally have thick wire double hooks I use a medium heavy rod.

    Thanks for all the info after everything I’ve been told I’m a little skeptical about the rod choices & line choices as well , but then again I have definitely lost fish trying to horse them with my heavier gear but from why I was told it was necessary, I know I’m a year late but I was wondering if your options have changed at all & As far as a generalization I can agree that smaller fish don’t tend to put up the best fight but once you hook into a 5+ that fight can last a lot longer then 5 seconds especially once you get close to that 10lb range

    • @MDYakFishing
      @MDYakFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the detailed post. I appreciate it. Funny you should mention it. I lost my first snakehead to a broken line a couple days ago. Never had that happen since I started fishing them in 2017. It was a 10lb fish that was in weeds and I pulled to the kayak/net without much issue. As it went into the net it jump a few feet over my kayak into some wood and broke me off. I caught a 14lb snakehead a few weeks ago and the only fight was at the kayak and net. I stand by the weak fight even for the biggest of them. I still use mostly small sized lures. I’ve been using a Booyah Pad Crasher Jr lately that I’ve been liking. I also have caught quite a few on the Z-man Finesse Frogz. I will say that if I use a bait caster I use at least 40lbs braid. That has nothing to do with the fish and everything to do with the poor physics of bait casters. Its really easy to break off 20-40 lbs line on bait casters due to line cut in.

    • @MDYakFishing
      @MDYakFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ianm6856 Baitcasters work well for lures over 3/8oz. Spinning setups work for great for lighter lures. If I were going to use one setup it would be a spinning rod but if you already have a bait caster there is no reason not to use it too.

    I don't know about the 12 lb test ? when I was I kid my dad always said you don't need no more then 12 lb test.and after having some big bass break my line I will never know how big the fish was.so I use spider wire now and been thinking about going back to fluorocarbon and trying 12 cuz of the cast distance so I'm glad you said that.plus my one reel is getting low.you got any recommendations on a brand.

    • @MDYakFishing
      @MDYakFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s all about setting your drag and using medium power rods. If you crank the drag down with a heavy powered rod you will definitely get some break offs. I love kastking braid. I’ve used everything but it’s the only one I use now.

      I give you credit. If you can cast a 1/16 - 3/16oz lure over 120’ with accuracy with a bait caster setup my hat is off to you. I use spinning tackle so i can make long accurate casts with light lures.

    • @MDYakFishing
      @MDYakFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. Normally I only ever take what I’ll use. The bag I take with me on my kayak can fit 10-12 snakeheads. You can release any fish you catch in Md as long as it is immediately after catching in the same water you caught it. To your point this year I’ve kept/dispatched every one I caught no matter how many I caught. The numbers I found this year were pretty staggering.

On first it may look as nothing special, BUT in the reality he is handling the most poisonous fish here in the adriatic sea. A small specimen of that fish can send you to the graveyard if you dont seek immediate medical help within 40 minutes. NOW imagine, how fast can this monster specimen kill you. And mind that, its poison is kicking in immediately, completely shutting you off, taking out your ability to move. Watch from 12:00 -> 13:00, believe me, when i see him doing that, my legs and arms go on needles. Man, when i catch that fish, im cutting my leader instantly, cuz i have a grandpa neighbour who lost an arm due to its sting.
