Such an incredibly sharp movie. The lighting, the colors, the composition, the action. All just so incredible. But what an amazing Cinematographer! All of his films really stood out to me before I got into filmmaking. Identity is one of my favorite films. Because of him the Four Aces movie ranch is one of my favorite locations that I STILL haven’t shot at! But damn Indy Mogul, you guys are killing it. Look at all these best picture Cinematographer’s! These are Oscar nominated People on the show! This is just crazy.
I want to know who “thumbs downed” this episode and why. This was one of my favorite movies I’ve watched in a long LONG time. That scene with the shadows in the hangar alone sealed the deal for me. HUGE thank you to you guys for doing what you do. Always entertaining. Always educational.
favourite scene is Miles first crash when it shows the car sliding from over Phil's shoulder, that whole scene was so artistically done. It really sells the suspence and draws out the tension.
@@yousefabdulrhman858 Screen recording on the iPad could also work, but then that screen recording would be the only thing you see. You wouldn't be able to see when they casually point out parts of the image, and it would remove that collaborative style of of having two people looking over one large drawing together.
This is brilliant. I read the ASC article about the film. That was already cool. But having Papamichael actually explaining and drawing is a real blast. Thank you so much.
What I'm curious about is how is pay determined? When you have a DP who's worked with you for 5 movies, how do you negotiate how much to pay? It's like only he understands the director, it's priceless.
That's why hollywood is quite dependent on agents - so that they don't have to sully friendships and working relationships with money disputes. It's just agents arguing with studio people.
Thanks for getting the low down on this one! I'm not a big race car fanatic, but the camera work for this film does a fantastic job of recreating the sensation of driving a race car.
This is just great. Really enjoyed listening to Phedon. Loved that he enjoys cars on top of enjoying filmmaking. Being a fan of cars myself and a filmmaker, I also enjoyed this movie and felt it was beautifully shot. So again, it's great you guys sat down with him and broke done some of his techniques. Loved the card board chat of the hanger that made me laugh. Especially when he said if you were there and saw it in person that it would seem like they didn't know what they were doing. Haha ... filmmaking, looks silly in the process but that final look is what really sells it. :)
Yes I’m sorry about the last name I did but you did tell you I didn’t want you in my life lol I don’t have to do be with my dad I just got to the hill I got to my mom I was going on a little later lol I was like I don’t have a good day lol lol I’m not going on my way back lol I got to my house and I’m broke my mom I don’t have to my dad and my dad is not picking me out lol lol I’m not going on a day or two I just don’t have a good day lol I just don’t have to sleep lol I don’t have a lot to say about that lol I just don’t want to get beat you lol I just got to the hill lol I got to go eat my mom I don’t have a good job I’m just finished up and I’ll just come in the shower ok ok so I’m gonna be home by about the same bruh and I’ll just tell her that you are ok and I’ll be ok bye lol lol I don’t have to sleep over here lol I don’t have a lot to say about that lol I don’t have to go eat at the sun I just don’t want to get up and I get off.
This was incredible. Thank you for these videos. One thing I wish is that you'd ask about sound recording where applicable because that can cinematography can affect how sound is recorded or vice versa.
You guys look cramped in the space! The old setup looked much more aesthetically pleasing, love the show though! This is one of the best schools for filmmaking accessible for the every man.
Would it be possible to ask him why he chose to expand the C-series instead of going with the Ultra Vista, which would have covered the LF and provided an aspect ratio of 2.37?
Gabriel Machado Because those are new lenses. Remember he even states here that he wants something that feels traditional and in the era, so he wanted older vintage style anamorphics. Also the UVs are an oddball 1.65x so they aren’t the full 2x that pro DPs are used to, so the out of focus elements don’t have the same panache.
The Alexa LF sensor is physically larger than the Red Vista Vision / Panasonic DXL2 sensor which the Ultra Vista lenses were designed for, and the Alexa LF sensor has a taller open gate aspect ratio, so a 1.65 squeeze is almost not enough for a 2.40:1 final aspect ratio.
That's a common technique to visualise airflow at points on a car body. you can see where the air is going and whether the flow is turbulent or not by how each string behaves.
That's due to the anamorphic lenses, especially modified ones like this set. All lenses focus breathe (due to optical physics), but the "corrected" ones have a second element stack that zooms a bit to perfectly compensate. If that were added to an anamorphic optic, you'd end up with a lens that changes its squeeze factor when focusing... or a 28-element, 50lb lens, $1M lens.
James Mangold just loves making Dad movies doesn't he? just movies my dad would buy on dvd and have a blank face at for 2 hours untill the credits where he will smile slightly and nod.
*I have one question before watching the interview,* *Why there is focus breathing in some shots? is it because of the rehousing by Panavision or its what they have gone for?* *the focus breathing was so obvious!!*
I really wish if these videos were at least like 2 hours long. I know the hardships for that, but I just wish. This is great. Indy Mogul.. you guys rock! ♥️

Super fresh in my mind.

It would be cool if you guys had an iPad with the screenshots of the film and then he could draw directly onto the screen.
Or imagine something big like the Surface Studio
you could also just put a tv/monitor under some glass/acrylic and use erasable markers on it
@@noah_the_nerd why he will screen record the ipad while he is drawing.

I love when he explains the LEDs on the outside of the factory. I see that everyday in Atlanta.
The works that they've put on this movie is just incredible.
Amazing what kind of technology are used for these car action movies, never seen these special vehicles!! :)
they use Russian Arms and different types of stabilized heads. Also they showed the :18 podcast on a chassis
thanks for the addition!! :)
Professa he literally said in the video that they didn’t use those because he didn’t like the look it gave and how inconsistent it can be.
Oh, ok... I didn't get that... thanks!

The movie included heavy focus breathing during rack focusing, was this a period choice or stylistic?

Yes, I don't think I've ever came across a movie that had as much as what was in this movie. Was just wondering why they went with that style.
