Eleanor is perhaps one my most favorite historical figures. She was independently wealthy and powerful in an age when women were not. She lived so long that she saw generations of powerful people come and go while she endured . Many people lived their whole lifetime and never new of another ruler. Thanks. I was glad to see this important locale.
YES! And my favorite movie of all time is Lion in Winter. I think maybe Katherine Hepburn may have been the only woman who could have portrayed Eleanor.
I never thought of the origins of the fireplace - that was very interesting. I love the idea of the vase at the end of the table and it looked great. How cool is the fold down wainscoting for a serving area - I like that. Part of the fun bits of a chateau. Thanks for sharing today 😃
I truly hope Santa was very good to you bringing joy and peace an love" An Happy New Year's my lovelys 😍 🎉🥂🎉🥂🎉🥂🎉🥂🎉🥂🎉🥂 Enjoyed this vlog very much so beautiful my goodness... thank you for sharing your Day With us 💐 I appreciate your Knowledge of these sights it's Very fascinating...🏰 👌 I find I'm always enjoying 😉 Visiting you both 💕 I envision I'm right there with you
Richard 1st never saw himself as English. He saw it as an annexed territory to his true home in Aquitane. The history of overseas born Kings in England is amazing.
King Richard is my 27th grand uncle and Eleanor of Aquitaine is my 28th Grandmother. I am very interested in my genealogy and history in general. If more people worked out their family tree they would find Royals as well, that was not my goal but a perk in my search. I will admit finding out what your ancestors did to others and sometimes their own families creates quite a heavy feeling of karmic baggage to clear. But this is one reason I love these chateau adventures, because I get to see life happening in real time and bringing back happiness & authenticity to the places where my ancestors lived. It's like a peak through a time loop of sorts. I see the renovations as some of that karmic clean up through the currently enjoyed freedom of creativity and often genius ways these buildings are used to unite people instead of oppress people. Brilliant video thanks for sharing it!
Hi fellow Canadians I love your travel vlogs to visit other villages and chateau’s and the Christmas meal prep, Wow what a wonderful turkey and ham meal, and table setting, but please don’t take this the wrong way, the little glass is too small to be a water glass, water glasses should be just slightly smaller than the wine glass , but yours is actually way too small and is maybe a cognac glass or spirit glass, or maybe that’s the only option you had and therefore used it?…. Have a wonderful New Year and your vlogs are delightful.
Hi Steve and Sara, the views across the valleys were breath taking. So much History and Culture to enjoy. The dinner looked absolutely scrumptious, could not ask for better. The ham turned out gorgeous, it looked so tasty, one of our favourite meat dishes. Not to keen on turkey but will enjoy when offered. Loved the incognito cupboard. it is so nice, wait the more you use it, the more you will get to appreciate it. I would say it just needs a coat of paint. I dare not say too much as I wanted the inner doors painted before Christmas, but that never happened, so, there is also the window sills to be updated, we all have responsibilities and chores to see to. All that matters, you were with the people you wished to be with, you all had a fine time and so blessed to be together. We are just going to enjoy a light dinner for New Years Eve, and then tomorrow we will have a full dinner, with a braai (barbeque) on the side. Don't wish too much food, just the company and memories. Wishing you the very best for 2022, we take each day as it comes and carry on with our lives as normal. Think I'll do an apple sponge for desert tomorrow, how about you Steve. Many blessings, regards.
Ooh guys thank you so much for showing us this chateau and it’s wonderful surrounding lands it’s beautiful. You give us great places to see thanks again. Much love Lisa xx beautiful food Steve yummy xx 😘 ❤️ happy new year x
You are making me miss France so much! And in particular the Périgore Noir, Sarlat, Beynac and La Roque-Gageac. LRG has a lovely restaurant that you should check out next time you are in the area, it's called La belle étoile, if my memory is correct, and it's overlooking the river. I am from Bordeaux originally and I spent all my summers and most of my holidays in the area, camping, kayaking and visiting the amazing villages, castles, museums and caves... Dordogne has an endless amount of beautiful places to explore, it's my favorite place in France. You definitly picked the right place to settle!! Funny thing is I now live in BC, Canada, but I hope to come back to France soon.
From Vancouver Island, British Columbia CANADA- Great Video and info on Eleanor of Aquitaine. The 1968 movie "The Lion in Winter" which took place during Christmas 1183 starred Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole. Not sure how historically accurate it was..
Awesome views!!! Rich history. The floors are amazing in the state room. Love seeing the village and the cliff paths... amazing how they built in the cliffs. Amazing!!! love learning the history ... The dinning room is beautiful. Lovely table setting. All the best in 2022!
The tapestries are amazing. The red is madder and is usually a dye that is long lasting as is the blue (indigo or woad) What you do see faded is the yellow. That is why there are no greens as the blue would have been overdyed with weld for the yellow. Natural dyes are a very interesting rabbit hole!
Thank you for the tour of Beynac Castle & Roque-Gageac! Sarlat is lovely. I got to go to a Fall market a couple of years ago... I bought a walnut cake that was marvelous and some nougat that was divine! We stayed in a "rustic" gite. I use quotations because the cabin included a bidet! Not like cabins in the US or Canada! LOL! Your decorations and dinner looked lovely! Thanks for sharing!
Oh this was a discovery, thank you! Although you mentioned that La Roque Gageac is a tourist mecca, I had never heard of it until you gave us that delightful tour of the town. Added to my must-see list, next time I am over the pond.
That turkey looked awesome and no doubt was tender beyond belief? My son did that with the turkey we enjoyed at our family Christmas and it was so tender! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
So interesting that you're talking about Eleanor of Aquitaine. I just saw "The Lion In Winter" on the classic movie channel the other day (for the gazillionth time). I recommend! Peter O'Toole as Henry II and Katharine Hepburn as his crafty wife Eleanor. Not historically accurate in any way, but SO GOOD!
Sarah, you are really good at describing history, as is Stephanie. I noticed the Mexican decorations in cut out paper since last year I taught a papercutting course at an art center and one of my resources was a butterfly cut that way. We did it on stronger black paper though, not as a banner but I love these. Thanks! Happy New Year.
Well dear folks, I would also have put the floral arrangement at the end of the table…well done. Your meal looks superb and my tummy is now rumbling but will have to wait until nearer ‘The Bells’ where we will be outside ready to welcome in 2022. Please God it will be a better and healthier year for all. In the meantime continue to keep safe and well. God bless all.
Usually all stairs in medieval castles go clockwise because the advancing attackers going up couldn't use their right swordarm, while the defenders coming down could as they had more room. Happy New Year!!!
Thank you for sharing all your explorations with us!♥️ Next time you roast a turkey or chicken, put cut potatoes, carrots, parsnips and onion quarters under the bird to roast. They make a great rack for the bird, taste amazing. Your dinner and table look fabulous, most inviting and festive ♥️
Enjoyed so much the castle and village walking paths, They are beautiful and feel so ancient. Your dinner looks delicious! Love hidden areas! Great video! Enjoyed all the history.
Sarah, you give very good tours! I didn't know about Eleanor and fireplaces. The circular staircase appears to favor right-handed defendants as they descend, and lefties as they ascend. I've seen the "secret" sideboard (possibly @The Chronicles of Rosieres) and I think it's comical that people with such huge rooms perceived a need to hide their cabinetry. Thanks for including us in your holiday!
I actually just watched a tour of one of those homes you passed in La Roque-Gageac! It's fascinating to see how much is carved into the side of the cliff.
Happy New Year !!! Please get a collaboration with Stephanie and Phillip. About decorating and setting the table. It will be amazing to see them in your chateau. Working together. And getting your place back to his glory !!!
Another enjoyable sight seeing trip as we are stuck at home in Australia with no foreseeable future to travel . Loved the beautiful town you visited. Lovely in winter without the crowds. Have a very Happy and Safe New Year.
Ohhh that is a great travel vlog, Beynec would have been a great fortress for viewing oncoming troubles! Ahhhh La Roque-Gageac - love this town when I was there
Lovely dining room and a beautiful table. All very inviting and friendly. I believe the plant you were gifted with is called gorce and looks quite festive. Enjoy that wonderful meal, great job Steve. Johanna Maine USA
What a lovely first Christmas in your beautiful Chateau! I saw a "St Germain Scented" candle at a local store and thought about you guys! (it was $52 for a small stinky candle)😀
Merry Christmas and Happy New YeAr, Sara and Steve and family. When you were setting your table it reminded me of a Christmas past. Red tablecloth, white napkins, red baubles on the table. I wanted to add another bit of colour so I went out to the backyard and picked some fuchsia flowers and placed a sprig on the napkins. Only sat down to find the ants also wanted to be included in our meal! A hint to beware of flora as a decorative option. The meal looked delicious Steve. Regards Susan.
Loved the tour so much and not too much queasy panning around with the camera for me. The improvised use of the fancy cooking pan for the ham made me smile, I understand you have to improvise just now so soon after moving in. The view from the upper area over the large river showed just how much woodland there is in France, must be lots of wildlife. Thank you both for sharing the start of your new life, it’s exciting!! WCL
The plant might be either a member of the acer family (maple) family (that is what my French grandfather called them) or it could be be a euonymous bush. Thank you for taking us to visit the castle, so interesting history and such a beautiful place, I too love the little winding paths and the stone. I noticed 7 mins in to the video there were teddy bears at some of the windows, so sweet, I wonder what the significance is. It was a fun tour and very much appreciated. Wishing you all very Happy New Year.
Thank you for the lovely day out with you both the tapestry was beautiful I'm glad I don't have to carry shopping up those steep streets but it was a beautiful place. Dinner looked good Steve . I wish you a Happy New Year to you and your families and looking forward to the New Year 2022 adventures with you Xxxx
Hi Sara & Stephen, I enjoyed this so much, you guys really got your steps in on your trip to Beynac castle, it was wonderful! Sara I love your scarf, I have a passion for them and yours is beautiful! Really enjoyed watching Stephen make dinner! Warmest wishes for a Peaceful, Prosperous, Healthy & Happy New Year! ✨🍾🎉🎆 Take really good care of yourselves, stay well! Much love Kathy x 💖💖Ontario, Canada
Ah! Such wonderful memories of places we visited in the Dordogne - such a magical place for you to be living in. Hopes of one day returning. Perhaps I can bring a sewing workshop to your lovely Chateau - one can dream! Cheers and bonne année Steve & Sarah 🥂🎉🎇
Thank you so much Sara and Steve, I felt like I was being taken through a fairytale village. Just imagine the generations that have walked those streets and seen those views! Your table and meal looks delicious many blessings and wonderful adventures for 2022! Manitoba 🇨🇦🥳
Such beautiful views and scenery. Love the history lessons and tapestries. Really need some sturdy walking shoes. Everything on the table looked yummy. Loved the secret serving table. Wishing you and your family a healthy and happy new year
I’m watching your video on the way to a beautiful mystery destination 😉 and loved every second! Eléonore d’Aquitaine and Richard the Lionhearted are two of my favourite people in history, and they are buried not far from us, so we must go together when you next visit! The turkey looked amazing, the table was lovely, and loved seeing your hidden “bar and service area”. I’m sure you’ll make good use of it on New Year’s Eve! 🍾🥂🥰💖🏰💖🏰
Thank you for a wonderful video! The castle scenes were picture postcard perfect and I loved the winding stone stepped paths with foliage. Great sideboard idea in the dinning room and I know you both enjoyed the dinner. Steve, next time try a touch of cayenne pepper in the ham glaze.🙂
That all looked very scrumpticous. I tried duck fat potatoes one year, I liked them but sadly the family did not. That was interesting little tour around the town
A lovely tour and history of castle, villages, and people. Drooling over here watching Steve prepare dinner. Cute details re vases & secrets! May I offer a little suggestion? To put “Knife Rests” on your next brocante adventure, I have some crystal ones and they save my linens a lot. Love your videos, all the best!
As always, I enjoyed the vlog a lot. The scenes of the Dordogne and the surrounding towns was spectacular and the history that went along with it. Your secret cabinet is cool, I would use it for the same thing. Happy New Year from West Brant.
I am just loving your videos. We spent a week in the Dordogne area on our last trip to France and I loved your video. I have been fascinated by Eleanor of Aquitaine for many years but never heard that she was first to put fireplaces in houses. Thanks for the new trivia!
This video is wonderful. Eleanor of Aquitaine is my favorite historical figure. When the question is asked "who would you have dinner with if you could chose anyone?", I would choose her! I have been trying over the years to visit the castles that she lived in or owned or were part of her history and it's going to take a while! With her lands, Henry II controlled more of France than the French king. And, I'm very curious about why the market was filled with items from Mexico? That was surprising, did you find out? Again, you've given us a fascinating video, please keep them coming!
well that is a lovely table and totaly edible feast ! you have done all we Canadians proud ! it seems to me you cann't swing a cat without hitting a castle or chateau ! we are wondering why ? through the ages many of the french had to have money ,alot of it !
Superb. Lovely to see you here today. The table looked just perfect. Happy New Year to you both and your family. Just think how much has cha fed for you in the last year 🍷🍷
Nice vlog. I enjoyed the tour at the beginning and the cooking segment. Your dinner looked very good. Wish we could buy duck fat in the US. I want some of the potatoes roasted in it!
I am in awe of people who don't just talk about what their dreams are, but actually take the risk and live them. Happy New Year!
Thank you.

❤❤Amazing !!! What a fantastic tour. Thank you for taking us along on your excursions. Your videos are very well done 👌👍👏
Lay your wine bottles down & store them that way to avoid corked bottles. Happy Christmas
I have also seen people heat up the neck of the bottle to get cork out. Who knows 🤷♀️
Well that all looks very cosy and wholesome for dinner. Loved the visits you made, I am now going to read more about Eleanor. Thank you both

I saw the salt (?) in the Bonne Maman jam jar!! We keep so much in those jars from sugar to paper clips. :)
Le Crueset forever!!!!!!! Love that color, too.
Ohhh that is a great travel vlog, Beynec would have been a great fortress for viewing oncoming troubles! Ahhhh La Roque-Gageac - love this town when I was there
You might want to invest in a wine rack. Wines need to be stored on their side in order to keep the cork wet.
I love all the video shots that Steve did from the castles. 💜🇺🇲
Ohhh you are taking me back to my earlier travels! Sarlat is a beautiful city any time of year ! Thank you for taking me around the streets I walked

The Turkey and spuds look good Steve
Thank you for taking us to visit the castle, so interesting history and such a beautiful place, I too love the little winding paths and the stone. Wishing you all very Happy New Year.

Just think how much has cha fed for you in the last year 🍷🍷
Thank you so much 😊
I'm always interested to get a look at places, towards making a future move myself (probably further South than your spot) 👍
Nice vlog. I enjoyed the tour at the beginning and the cooking segment. Your dinner looked very good. Wish we could buy duck fat in the US. I want some of the potatoes roasted in it!
Great photography!
