Where to Get Sustainable Denim in London 👖| Sustainable London series

It takes thousands of gallons of water and tons of toxic chemicals to create the jeans you buy from retailers, that will fall apart pretty quickly and were made in terrible working conditions. That's obviously not ok, so earlier this year we visited Blackhorse Lane Ateliers, London's last craft jean maker.
While they don't like to talk about how sustainably they operate much, their ethos of selling a pair of jeans that will last a lifetime, without waste and without underpaying staff, make them one of the most sustainably operated factories in London. And this kind of thing is a no-brainer to them, as they're less focused on profits and more on making good things you only have to buy one and that are made by happy people who are paid at least a living wage.
Blackhorse Lane Ateliers's factory is in Walthamstow, which anyone can walk in and visit at any point of the day and week (although not while COVID procedures are in place. Check their website to see if they're taking visitors now.) Their factory also has a kitchen that a local chef takes over to make bread for the community and to put on supper clubs in the factory on the weekends.
Blackhorse Lane Ateliers also has a stunning shop in Coal Drops Yard, in the Kings Cross area of London. They sell both men's and women's denim, including jeans, jackets and more. They also offer free lifetime repairs for their jeans, done right in store on amazing vintage sewing machines.

It's important that when we can, we continue to support small businesses that operate sustainably and ethically. While COVID showed us (even more) that big fashion brands only care about profit at the expense of people and the planet, these small businesses have continued to support their employees and limit their environmental impact.
