- The Donkey Kong arcade games are considered to be classics. These games not only introduced Mario, Donkey Kong, and Pauline to the world, but were some of the very first platformers ever made. Donkey Kong was also the first game to tell a story. The first two games were very successful and are looked back upon fondly. But there exists an obscure third arcade game, Donkey Kong 3. While we wait for the next Donkey Kong game to release on the Nintendo Switch, let's take a look at one of the most bizarre video games ever made!

You should especially mention how macabre Stanley's death animation is. If he gets hit by any of the bugs, he would scream in pain, followed by falling to the bottom of the stage. Every bug present on the screen would proceed to head towards Stanley and swarm all over him. After that, the only thing that remains is his bug sprayer, implying that the bugs had ATE Stanley!!!!! What makes this even darker is the tune that accompanies the moment that nothing is left of Stanley (except his bug sprayer) after he gets consumed by the creepy-crawlies, which is one of the darkest things that was heard from an arcade game.

@@firestriker3580 In the arcade release, they did. Nintendo then thought that would be too dark for the home versions, so it was changed so the sequence was just Stanley keeling over.
I remember reading a comment that said that if Mario is Mickey, then Stanley is Oswald.

Maybe when the next mainline Mario game happens, Stanley will appear in some form like Pauline did after not appearing in any games besides the Mario vs donkey Kong series.

I actually think it would be cool if they brought Stanley back in Odyssey 2,i mean it would be awesome if they acknowledged Mario and Stanley's alleged familial connection,like to see if they are really cousins or not...

Donkey Kong 3 is actually my favorite of the OG trilogy. I actually think it's fairly underrated.

I'll admit, I never particularly cared for DK3, but this retrospective was fun to watch.
I hope we can see Stanley in more games. I mean, if Foreman Spike is making a comeback in the Mario movie, why can't Stanley. Put him in Mario Kart or Mario Maker or something or hell, I'll take an assist trophy in Smash lol
I'm shocked he didn't make a cameo in Steam Gardens considering it's a Greenhouse

@@DonkeyBoyVids It’s foreman spike, as unlikely as it may sound. The voice cast reveal showed a symbol of foreman spike’s head that looked like the head of his nes sprite.

I loved this game for a while when I first started using MAME with an arcade stick. Still fun to revisit every now and then.
It's a very interesting game to say the least
I played Donkey Kong 3 for the fist time when its NES port launched on the NES Online on July 2019 for Nintendo Switch Online members. Prior to this, I was aware of what the game was about. I am a retro gaming enthusiast but, still, I was plesently surprised by how playable and enjoyable this game is. Its controls on NES Online really feel like they are from a modern 2021 indie game and not a 1983 famicom/arcade game. I think it's a remarkable game to play and replay. I am glad someone posted such a great and accurate review of it on TH-cam for once, for people to discover it for the first time.
It's a very cool game. I'd watch GamingHistorian's video about it too.

I'm still so revolted at how the Mario Movie made up a bunch of random relatives for Mario and Luigi and they didn't even have the courtesy to add Stanley the Bugman onto the dinner scene, y'know the one family member that actually comes from the games (and the early ones too). Still have some hope that he can be in the sequel tho.
Stanley The Bug Man is also a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Let's hope for a Donkey Kong Arcade 1up Cabinet. Also Universal Studios haha.
Also have to comment, it's great to see someone give this game a fair chance but also some love with more thorough coverage of its history and related games than I have ever seen anyone else give it.
One thing the arcade version had that the NES version didn’t was that the bugs would EAT STANLEY ALIVE! Combined with the death music, that must’ve scared some people.
Glad to see Donkey Kong 3 getting the love that it rightfully deserves.
If Disney where to release the 2023 Mario movie then Peach or Daisy is Stanley that means Peach or Daisy is transgender.
Honestly this is my favorite of the trilogy (sorry DK Jr.) so it's nice seeing you review it!

DK 3 is awesome. I really enjoyed the old sounds, look, the way the bugs looked, etc. It has amazing charm.
I played DK3 a lot on Mame back in high school. I recently revisited the game when I built a 60 in 1 arcade cabinet last year. I play this game the most out of the DK trilogy.

Donkey Kong 3 is in my top 3 favorite arcade games. Its not a common cabinet , and I always get excited when I see it in the wild. It's peek classic Arcade IMHO

I probably playd this more than any Donkey Kong game in the arcade (and played DK Jr. the most out of the NES ports).
Used to play this all the time as a kid at the roller rink in the late 80s. My sister played it too.
The last few times I went to my local pinball place, I played this on their multi-game arcade cabinet as a sort of cool-down break after playing a few pinballs, and before playing a few more.
My headcanon is that Stanley is Pauline's brother and that DK targeted him because Mario and Pauline were on vacation
The true story is, donkey kong (now known as cranky kong) did too much trolling and jumpman (marios father) has to now stop him. Change my mind

DK3 was one of the games my parents grabbed along with our nes. And I never knew until now that it was possible to kill all of the bugs.

As he shoot em up fan I really enjoyed this one when I played it on switch. It's like a galaga or a Satan's hallow.
I love this game. Once I played it I knew this game needed some more love same with Sky Skipper. Which is also a DK game. I'm happy these games are getting some love. They need it and I'm happy DK3 arcade is getting more and more love too. DK deserves it. I love Mario games but Donkey Kong games to me are more fun and the soundtracks is amazing 😍

Picture this, 1981, NYC, downtown Manhattan at the Delancey Street Pizza and Deli at New Roma Pizza. Thats where I first saw Donkey Kong arcade game and it was a blast! This this day when ever I smell any fresh cooked pizza I always think of DK:3

I have that strange HudsonSoft PC version of Donkey Kong 3. It's quite interesting, it's very similar gameplay-wise but removes the platforming part entirely, making it REALLY similar to Galaga.

@@Demeech Sadly, no, I don't have an actual original copy, I have the recent dumped rom and X1Millenium. Getting an actual copy is basically impossible, they were so rare that some weren't even sure if the game really existed. Just a few years ago it was completely impossible to find even a dump of it, even though you could find SMBSpecial, Punch Ball and Mario Bros. Special easily. It was basically completely lost media until relatively recently.

I remember playing donkey Kong 3 in my old grandparents tv the weird part was that the tv had the game inside the tv itself, and the controller was the remote controller and you can bet it was the worst controller I had ever played a game with

@@Demeech for reference, search up Sony old tv models, specifically the big gray boxes, it was one of those, it didn’t have anything attached to it like those bootleg plug n plays that always had those 10000000 games in 1 stuff in the market but it was very similar, I remember playing Charlie’s circus, The nes Tank game, dig dug, Galaga, Mappy, Mario bros 1 only and all 3 donkey kongs, Excite bike, ice climbers, Popeye, kung fu master, balloon fight, Contra and Bomber man, hell I’m so lucky I got to experience that and being part of my childhood but god the tv remote controller was infact the worst

Although id thought id say some fun facts bout masqitoes. They are an important part of the food chain and many animals depend on them.

And they can come in a veriety of colors.
