I don’t care who you are, but the fact that you killed a second elk from the same spot as the bull who’s sinew was in your bow back, is about the freaking coolest hunting story out there! I mean seriously, that’s like the pinnacle of being a primitive archer and hunter.
My parents bought a piece of land back in 95 that has a pretty big group of osage that were pushed over back in 65. I had no idea as a kid how valuable that wood is for Bow building. Since I've found these videos and all the great work that Clay does, I'm going to practice on other wood, and eventually start using that osage that is nearly 60 years old, and literally in perfect shape.
I bought an Osage Orange bow from a bow maker in Kampsville Illinois that was eerily similar to yours. It has the curves and the snake skin on the back. I gave the maker $120.00 for his personal bow.
Just inspiring man... I started a trad archery journey 3 years ago and it's been a bonding experience for me and my boy... The other day withilout any prompting he loaded his bow and called his shot and nailed it... From 8 ft away but hey he's 4 years old lol... Love seeing your son in most of this video
This was for some reason one of my favorite videos you’ve made, I really enjoy all of your content but this video had a really great feel and story behind it
I really enjoy your videos Clay. I’m currently building a traditional muzzleloader, 54 cal. Patched round ball, by hand and am hoping to harvest an elk with it this year. I’m finding inspiration in your videos. Thank you!
You're an absolute beast of a man! I hunt successfully with a recurve, never with a gun or compound but to make youre own bow isnjust that next level, I'm 27 and hope to maybe one day grow up and make my own gear to hunt with.
I'm working on 2 pacific U wood stave's that have past threw two people to get to me and I estammate where cut 100. Year's ago this bow means a lot to me ! And that's the short story !
Great video as usual. Your instructional and hunting videos are are top notch and a pleasure to watch. On top of that you seem to be raising your boys the right way. Your hunting ethics would make Jay Massey proud. Your content should be required for all future hunters.
That bow is beautiful ..i really want to get into making my own bows ..that is just awesome ..especially to take game with a bow you made ..if i could make one that bow you made is pretty much exactly what i have in mind !! Copperhead skin and all with the curves!!!! Just truly awesome man!!!
really liked the way expressed to everyone that maybe never had the same idea as u the way the journey was to be able to mesh with the whole experience of harvesting the making an complete spiritual GOD given experiences in the process of the whole impact as well as family members I couldn't find anything on that. I appreciate it and thank you for sharing something like that with everyone else. I make bows for my therapy and to hunt with as well try to teach anyone who might be interested especially kids but Makin bows for me is a life saver I am a veteran and I have multiple limitations but ptsd Is the only thing that I have to fight with so Makin bows helps me in that way gives focus on the days when I struggle with life nowadays and u said it perfect
That was an awesome video. I have been hand crafting knives for years now, and there is nothing more satisfying than to see something you made yourself perform. Thanks for sharing.
That is the best my friend, just love your videos and want to make a Snakey bow but can’t find any Osage in upstate South Carolina. I remember you you have broken bows in you shop you save, maybe make kit bows out them. I’m a disable vet and should love to hunt with a bow I could make. I have allot of health problems, so it take me for ever to make any thing. I just love leather craft and wood work on anything, I want to teach my two grandsons. Osage is just hard to find and cost to much. Keep up the content. David
My bows name is the desert princess. Thus far I have taken a coyote, 3 rough grouse, a collared dove and a squirrel with her. She is a prairie rattler/sage grouse/ rawhide backed rocky mountain juniper. She pulls about 64lbs at 28 inches. I cut her in idaho 2 years ago. She is not a my most powerful bow but easily the best looking and performing.
@@clayhayeshunter I bought your book on making bows back in 2019 and my first board bow snapped and almost broke my thumb. Then life happened and I havent been able to try again. Im gonna get a new board this week and give it another go.
I grew up hunting in NZ and never used a bow to hunt. Now I live in the UK and have got into archery and all I want to do now is hunt with it. But in UK it is illegal to kill anything with a bow! I think i will have move back to NZ to bow hunt.
At distances over 60 yards I find it easier to use a gap anchor instead of point of aim like it looks you do. If instead of anchoring the arrow at your eye with a three under hold, you anchor at the corner of your jaw with a two under one over hold then put the tip of the arrow at the elevation of the target you should be very close. You may have to hold what looks like an inch or two above the target depending on your bow. I tell you this because this method let's you keep better sight of the target while aiming. If you ever decide to bird hunt with your bow you will rarely get inside 30 yards on birds. They just seem to know you are there. Turkey will get closer, but I'm talking flying birds like pheasant or quail or dove. If you've never tried flying birds you should give a wack at least once. It is more fun than sporting clays. My longest shot was 65 yards on a Bob white quail flying away. It does require a special fletch to help track the arrow in flight, but it is fun.
native style release where you aim and release all in one motion will also add more power and speed. holding the shot to aim actually takes some power and speed away
I'm just making my skinny for this summer season... try deer hunting in feeders and puddles of water... it will be my first time. I hope you help me with the information friend.
You’re a badass dude! Awesome video! Any interest in taking that little bow on an adventure and in the peaks of northern California in search of big blacktail? Let me know.
That’s one of my faves, Clay. It’s funny how I feel like I was on the journey of that bow as these were the vids I was watching when first getting into bow making 🤙🏼 ...how is that 3D going? Did he find his mate? 😉
Hey Clay, what an amazing bow and great video! Do you think it would be possible to replace the vibreglas part by sinew and fishglue and make an all natural 2 piece takedown this way? I’m a bowyer myself and your valuable reply would be much appreciated!

😂I thought it was pretty damn cool too!
If it wasn't recorded ... It will be hard to believe
lol the story behind the foam buck is gold. Pure gold.

Bowhunters like you help keep me motivated. Thanks buddy!

When that arrow split my heart dropped man, so happy the bow didn't get more damaged. Super cool story.

Awesome video. A great example how you can keep adjusting and adding to a bow, and that’s it’s not just a one-and-done process. Great story!
Thank ya

Very cool
That's a long time! Sumone kept 2 staves for 100 yrs without turning em into a bow?
I’ve got a set of yew billets that were probably cut in the 50s. There’s some old wood out there.
The look on the Gators face said it all, "Try that again next year buddy!" lol Good stuff, this has to be one of the prettiest bows I have seen.
Thanks Wes
Jokes on the gator... this bow might have a bow fishing reel on it next year... 😂

Incredible
Hahahaha 😂 mate! That's gold your reply to the troll's 👍👍
This video is full of so much great content I can’t even comment on it all. Keep up the great work Clay.
You should try and make a traditional wooden kayak and use that for your hunts to match the traditional vibes.
That would be heavy
I’ve thought about a skin on frame kayak. I’ll get there one day.
Awesome video brother
Glad you enjoyed
Your bow needs to be a special item in a video game like world of warcraft or final fantasy. Hell even cod warzone or cold war would be dope.
goody video!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love this video Clay! Forget the haters!! They can keep getting their meat from the store! HA!
Could you show setting up and tying in a clicker. Thinking about one to help with target panic
Have you ever bow hunted in NZ?
Hunting Sika deer with a bow would be a real tough Challenge. They are very difficult even with rifle.
Is your bow a two piece takedown or did it become a single piece once you wrapped it? Amazing story, really enjoy your videos.
It’s a two piece
I'm first for once
Wow
How much does it pull? The killshot on that polybuck was awsom
How do you recurve a bow with dry heat, without breaking it when you pull it back?
native style release where you aim and release all in one motion will also add more power and speed. holding the shot to aim actually takes some power and speed away
It does, but I’m more interested in accuracy than speed. And I’m more accurate shooter that way.

Yes it is
@@clayhayeshunter Thank you for replying must try it. Greetings from South Africa and may God bless you and your family.
How many lbs are you pulling for your favorite bow?
Soooooo,...after putting the snakeskin on the bow, if you set it down on the ground long enough, does it try to crawl away??
🤔
What do you prefer hide glue or tite bond 3 for sinew backing application
I’ve used both. Titebond is probably more dependable on a hunting bow
I would like to have a patterning that you go by I have a cedar 8in thick about 6 ft long for some reason I just can't get it dried out right
That’s one of my faves, Clay. It’s funny how I feel like I was on the journey of that bow as these were the vids I was watching when first getting into bow making 🤙🏼 ...how is that 3D going? Did he find his mate? 😉

Do you think it would be possible to replace the vibreglas part by sinew and fishglue and make an all natural 2 piece takedown this way? I’m a bowyer myself and your valuable reply would be much appreciated!
I don’t think that would work but there are other ways to make an all natural takedown.
Do you have a video showing how an all natural takedown can be built? If not, is there a technique you would recommend?
Can you replace the sinew with fiberglass cloth
😂 nice deer Bro😂
