Welcome to Episode 1 of the Geopolitics Snapshot, where we take a look at current geopolitical events that are shaping the world around us!
This time we take a look at the Caucasus: On April 19th 2024, it was reported that Armenia and Azerbaijan reached an agreement to delineate a part of their Northern border. Four abandoned Azerbaijani villages that were occupied by Armenia since the 1990s will be returned to Baku's jurisdiction.
Although the change in territorial control is limited, it's a huge step towards a formal peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan. However, there are still many pitfalls. In this video, we explore the details of this new agreement, what the territorial transfer and the delineation of the border will mean for Armenia and Azerbaijan down the line and why a military conflict could still emerge, especially over the Zangezur Corridor.

The Zangezur corridor was accepted by Armenia but has not been implemented so far. I think Armenia expects hope from Iran, France or another foreign power in this regard, Because if the Zangezur corridor is opened, this does not only mean the unification of Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan. Türkiye will unite with the Central Asian Turks and Iran will be left out of the equation. Undoubtedly, many countries, especially Russia, China and Iran, will not want Turkey to be influential in Central Asia, but there is not much they can do at this point.
No Armenia did not accept the Zanguezur corridor. And even if you interpret the 2020 ceasefire agreement where Armenia pledged to: "guarantee the security of transport connections between the western regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic in order to arrange unobstructed movement of persons, vehicles, and cargo in both directions" as a corridor, that agreement has become null and void as a result of Azerbaijan's actions last September. That's like a homeowner evicting a tenant and then demanding him to keep paying rent even though he no longer lives there.
Why would Central Asian countries want to unite with people that not even Turk in the first place? (Turkey and Azerbaijan)

You are so ignorant And impudent Moreover, Turkey's relations with the Central Asian countries are based on equal alliance and cooperation, not on exploitation. Finally, do you really think that the people determine political policies in Central Asia?

Well done big man, I was searching for this update but its difficult to get results from that part of the world
Iranian here. I don't really think "separatism" is the main concern with Azerbaijan Republic taking over Syunik province. The border that Iran and Armenia share holds invaluable strategic importance for trade and defense to Iran and being cut off from Armenia which is a trade partner is not a favorable outcome. Also the current regime in Iran is increasingly worried about the relations between Azerbaijan Republic and Israel and hence doesn't like the idea of having Israel's presence on its north western borders alongside NATO. This is also at a time when the chauvinistic and irredentist rhetoric of the current government in Republic of Azerbaijan is extremely worrying and goes as far as some officials including president Aliyev going as far as calling Armenia "West Azerbaijan".
I would like to add the official position of Islamic Republic (the current regime in Iran) has always been support of the territorial integrity of Republic of Azerbaijan based on internationally recognized borders, it is the change in borders between Iran and Armenia that worries Iran to the point that Azerbaijan and Iran made plans to create a separate corridor going through Iran for connecting Baku to Nakhchivan.

من آذری هستم و اندیشه می کنم که ما ایرانی هستیم
You do not want to make turkey connect with turkic states. That corridor guarantees that. If there was no corridor. Turkey could directly influence and trade with turkic nations of central asia. There are many land swap solutions which favours armenia and guarantees connection to iran. But armenia refused UN plans for that. Russia now controls turkish trade with central asia. A corridor will make turkey stronger in middle east and Asia which other powers do not want.

Armenians are only withdrawing from the lands they occupied, all of these lands are recognized as Azerbaijani territory by the whole world (even Armenia)
Those territories that are currently in Azeri territory do not even belong to them. It was Satalin who gave them to them but in several treaties between Armenia and Turkey it appears that Nakhichevan and Artsakh are historically Armenian (without forgetting that Azerbaijan did not exist on the maps until 1918).
@@sbl0436 There has been no state called Armenia for 1000 years. Armenia has been the name of a geographical region for a thousand years. The thing is that we have a Church that's like 1400 years old in one of those villages and the Azeris already showed that they dont care about all these ancient stuff as they demolished most of our historic churches and buildings that were located in Artsakh and Naxijevan. Now if they get those lands they'll most likely continue destroying our heritage so that in future there will be no way for us to prove that those were our lands and that Armenians lived there
Maybe they would have been more careful with your heritage if their mosques in occupied lands were not turned into pigsties and cow sheds... What comes around goes around.

@@Racoons-hi5dhWell, the “Zionists” at least have evidence of their Jewish heritage in the region of Israel today. But the Azeri people (whom they claim are “Turks”) are from Central Asia and Iran, and are not indigenous to the region, at all, they came through invasions and colonies. And... The Azeri people are also not original Turks, as they claim to be, they are actually "turkified" Persians derived from the Persians living in around Central Asia and today's Iran. So basically Persians who adopted Turkic culture and language. Basically the Azeri people are fake people. So yeah, their identity is complicated

When people will understand that just because a nation lived 2000 years ago doesn't make that land theirs. Azerbaycan defended those lands in Safevi, Akkoyunlu, and Karakoyunlu times. If Armenians were obsessed that much with their lands, why did they not fight for those lands when enemies came? Also, Armenia converted mosques into barns.

Have just come back from a research trip in Armenia, and truth be told from what we've heard from various officials and local actors, developments since September 2023 paints a sad situation that will likely see the gradual loss of Armenian sovereignty. Armenia plays a diplomatic role in this conflict due to its military incapability, but strategically and diplomatically, it is completely outmatched with little hope of retaliation should Azerbaijan wish to invade. The country is beautiful from Yerevan to its countryside with many local actors and international intermediaries trying to make the best out of this situation, but with its best military hope being materiel sent from India, a preoccupied Iran and Russia, the future for the Armenian people doesn't look hopeful.
Azerbaijan doesn't seem to want to Invade, they have a set of issues that they are trying to solve. As the victor of the latest conflict, it is asking for certain things. Instead of using this as a chance to get a fair deal for itself, Armenian folks are preoccupied with what used to be there's. If they could work out an economic deal and a diplomatic deal that would improve relations with all countries in the region, this would improve Armenia as a whole. Azerbaijan invading doesn't makes sense because what would it do with Armenian towns and cities. Even if those countries help Armenia, Turkey would get involved immediately with what ever they have. This warmongering needs to stop.
They only have themselves - and those international actors and diaspora in particular - to blame

Not that this anything to do with the way actual power brokering works, but in my view, if there is to be any hope to be of an eventual deescalation of tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, then both nations need to make mutually balanced concessions with their respective exclaves.
Now that Karabakh is under Azerbaijani control, the reasonable thing for Azerbaijan to do is to cede the Nakhchivan Exclave over to Armenia in return. Territories need to be drawn up in a way so as to remove any incentives to continue on fighting.

Armenia has overcome many obstacles in its history and remains steadfast. It's a country that has been referenced since 300 BC, including mentions by Herodotus (the Greek historian). Anyone in the comments trying to falsify these well-established facts is a nationalist against the Armenian people. Don’t be distracted by bot likes. One more point to add is how Azerbaijan has conducted cyber warfare and attempted to appropriate Armenian heritage, despite lacking factual basis. Azerbaijan has also been known for cultural vandalism and destruction of Armenian cultural heritage sites, such as the ancient Armenian cemetery in Julfa, Nakhchivan. Furthermore, the Azerbaijani government actively denies the Armenian Genocide, despite international recognition and overwhelming evidence of their participation in the systematic killing of Armenians in the early 20th century.
More videos like this !!!
Let's be honest. If Armenia wants to achieve peace, it should make an agreement with the Turks, namely Turkey and Azerbaijan. Not with third countries that try to keep the tension alive for their own interests, feed on this tension and send Armenian youth to di* for this. After World War I, the story of the Turks was based on heroism, while the story of the Armenians stood still on victimization. Armenians living in prosperity in Europe and America are very insistent on the continuation of the situation of Armenians living in poverty in Armenia, but none of them return to their beloved (!) country and fight for it. How many more centuries do they plan to proceed with unproven accusations against the Turks, with a claim of genocide whose number of so-called victims increases geometrically every year? Even though Turkey has repeatedly invited they to do this, they are not willing to confront or sue Turkey, but they want the whole world to recognize this issue. It is very important to read the words of the first Armenian prime minister, Ovanes Kacaznuni, on this issue. Although I heard that Pashinyan has started talking about the truth lately. Ultimately, I hope that Armenians living in Armenia will now realize what really harms them and can clearly define their borders and start moving forward to become a strong country.

This whole thing is a farce. These are neither 4 nor Azerbaijani nor villages nor "being returned". 1.5 of those 4 "villages" were already under Azeri control. They have no population as 100% of the population had fled decades ago (thus not villages). And they are not being "returned" since they were never "taken" - this is actually a border demarcation process whereby military forces are being withdrawn and replaced with border guards along the internationally recognized border per Alma-Ata agreement.
According to Azerbaijan, Armenia is western Azerbaijan.
The funny thing is that Azerbaijan did not exist until 1918, plus they deny being descendants of Albanians and Persians.
And according to Armenia, Azerbaijan is eastern Armenia, Turkey is Western Armenia, Iran is southern Armenia, and the list goes on (just search great Armenia).
And you know what else is funny? According to Iran, the whole middle east is Iran!!!!!!! (and they fucking believe it)
Also worth noting that according to Kurds, Iran is eastern Kurdistan, Armenia is northern Kurdistan, and guess what, again the list goes on! (Just google great Kurdistan)
We should accept something and stick to it to avoid wars. I'd suggest internationally recognized borders for now, until there's a better suggestion. Any thoughts?
We dont deny being decendants of albanians. Its in our history. And you are mixing persians with iranian nations. Persians are one groups that formed there were other iranian speaking groups living in azerbaijan area that formed and mixed with people of azerbaijan. We are not racist. We dont claim pure bool and delusional ideas like that. We are proud to be mixed people. Turkish identity is multicultural.

@@OsbornsConcise No, Aliev himself literally said he wants to take Yerevan.
@@yazovgaming i wont even reply to this Armenian ultranationalist stupidity. Dont forget that it was Armenia who invaded Azerbaijan, not vice versa. Remember that
This is a horrible “report” leaving out large swaths of political facts. Azerbaijan’s dictator Aliyev doesn’t recognize the lawful international territorial integrity of Armenia. The exchange of the land is tied to that issue, and it’s not a done deal. Many Armenians are against this because meanwhile Aliyev has Azerbaijan occupying 8 other territories and they were not mentioned. Also you left out that the European Union is reviewing an international case against Azerbaijan and preparing for sanctions. Azerbaijan will no longer have its own oil around 2028, so I don’t know what that report you read is about. Iran can not allow Azerbaijan to connect with Turkey, that would make them the regional power. That’s not going to happen. Not only because Azeris and Iranians hate eachother but also because the west doesn’t want an east west trade route through the Caucasus, that would create a Turkic Asian power imbalance over the west and take trade routes into Europe. The west isn’t going to allow that no matter how much your Turk friendly report dreams.
