During the 1920s Gene Autry worked briefly as a telegrapher at the Frisco Depot. He later transferred to Sapulpa and then to the station in Chelsea. It was there that he was discovered by Will Rogers. While awaiting the next train, he noticed Autry’s guitar and asked him to play a tune to pass the time. Rogers was so impressed that he mentioned Autry on his national radio show and from there, Autry became one of the biggest country-western stars of the time. Later, Autry would return to Bristow, where he would broadcast a radio show from the radio station in the Roland Hotel Building.

Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain
And the wavin' wheat can sure smell sweet
When the wind comes right behind the rain

That round barn was designed/built with the idea that it would survive Oklahoma's many tornados. Looks like the idea works!

16:40 Gene Autry was raised in southern Oklahoma. There's a town in the south central part of the state named after him. He was a telegraph operator in that train depot before he became famous.

Beverly and Karl White were friends and business partners for a time Beverly in the real estate business and Karl had a fascinating vintage fishing tackle museum just down the road from the barn. Historians of the area told me that the lumber that needed to be bent in the original building of the barn was taken to a nearby creek and soaked and bent at the creek site. I think it also took some heat to heat the lumber after it was soaked. That had to be quite a project in those days. I can't imagine the craftsmanship involved. Sure brings back good memories. Stay safe and havacudun Russ.

I really enjoyed seeing the Round Red Barn. Nothing I imagined it to be like. Especially the second floor looking up to the ceiling. The lumber used to construct it, & the way it was constructed left me in awe. OMG that was a tall ceiling. The hole? Wow the hole? I have no idea for that area. Not a clue.

Thank you Russ for taking us into the little Red Barn on the highway and biway. What a beautiful little place of our history, and I love the two seater with the catalogue. LOL And that train. My uncle was a break man so he sat up on one of those seats and watched for bearings that were running into trouble. I love a train as the sound of the Prairies still brings goosebumps to my arms. I am an old prairie girl. It must get in your blood. LOL thank you so much for keeping us sane and taking us along with you Russ.
