Ian - yeah, so since it was May the 4th, I gave him another superchat and said “In the spirit of May the 4th, can you kindly check out my channel?” He had the helmet beside him so I figured I had a shot. He wrapped a call and said sure and that the timing was perfect. So he said one thing I kind of already knew- he saw my channel and said the banner doesn’t say anything about what my channel is (Precious Metals & Prepping with a Star Wars angle). So I need to add something beneath my name to indicate this. He said it’s good I have playlists, but I should add the playlists to my landing page on TH-cam (immediately made this switch). Then he said my thumbnails are good, but again, if I’m hitting the Precious Metals niche, I should incorporate more precious metals in the thumbnails. This was something I have already started doing because I noticed this myself a few weeks ago. So going forward, I’m going to have more metals visible in my thumbnails. He said the novelty of the stormtrooper is great so keep going with it. Lastly, he said since I’m under 1k subs, consider taking the Instagram and other social media links off the banner so I don’t direct people away. I actually don’t think that is necessary in my opinion. I’ve been at this just 3 months as of yesterday and hit 600 subscribers. I’m also in a tiny niche so there’s only so far my channel can grow. I think what separates me, though, from others in the precious metals stacking community, IS the Star Wars angle. Once i hit 1k subs or more, I’m going to start networking in the various Star Wars channels and try to start targeting some of that audience.

Once you have made the LLC, how do you go about tying it to your TH-cam channel, like if I get LLC today and tomorrow I get defamation sued, am I protected? or do I have to sync it to my channel somehow
Another Good One Ian. I'm actually thinking of throwing my hat into the ring and getting a channel off the ground. With over 30 or so years of experience in Music, Audio Engineering, Radio, Graphic Design, and other useful tools the one thing I was never keen on was all of the current laws that one should know before starting such a venture. I remember towards the ending days of my last run station they were about to update, actually totally update the guidelines with the percentage of royalties that needed to be paid to musicians for streamed content and that pushed a big chunk of us out of the game because the incurred costs were just too high if you weren't running tons of advertising. Long story short, I know that I want to make the company I already have on the books, at least on paper with the State of New Jersey, an LLC because obviously if I do end up running monetized videos, I know that Uncle Sam is going to want his cut every April and it amazes me the number of Creators I talk to that say, oh screw that I don't have to pay taxes on that stuff. I'll do things by the book rather than be sorry down the line. But I don't know how I got such off-topic, My question is simple, hopefully, What constitutes as online defamation in a TH-cam Video? Is it a blatant lie about someone else, or can you have someone trying to sue you for calling them names like an idiot, brainless, and harsher words in the same vein? You don't have to get too detailed, as I'm good at reading between the lines. I know I've been commenting a bunch on quite a few of your videos, just let me know when I'm overstepping my bounds. Hey Tom! It’s all relative - if you’re making $250/mo on AdSense and have $500 in the LLC bank acct, that is adequate capitalization. So yes, I always recommend an LLC - even if it your business’ beginning stage.

Hey Real World! The main advantage is that you can write off MORE business expenses than you can with an S. S is good if you want your business to have an "independent" life away from its shareholders -- I put TH-camrs in LLCs to allow them more active management of their businesses. Ian, thanks for this very informative video, I am a new TH-camr and soon I plan to set up an LLC for my channel. Not just to protect me but also to "run it like a business." After all, if I buy equipment or something like that, I want to be able to write it off. What I don't understand is, does Google pay me directly? How do I get them to pay my LLC instead? That's one piece I don't understand. Thank you. Long-term I think my goal is to own a holding company with the TH-cam LLC as part of it, and another company underneath it for rental properties, and who knows maybe someday some other businesses as part of it, too. But that gets legally quite complicated.

I don't typically voice my opinions on people on my channels. It's mostly theories about games on this one and information based on research and experience on the other (also a lot of opinion and I state that as a disclaimer on that channel, alternative healing methods). Is it still better to have an LLC? You mentioned I can research myself and probably pay a fee of around a few hundred dollars. Is that per year or is it a one-time fee? Thx.
It's always better to have an LLC to protect you. $200 is a one time fee, but you also have to pay taxes -- some states have a minimum tax per year. You have to check that out for your state. Thank you for watching!

I am a Californian and the state charges LLCs $800/yr from my understanding. Nevada is a no state tax state, but my understanding is that if you live in California you cannot get around CA’s LLC or business fees or taxes by opening a company or LLC as a Nevada business if you don’t reside there. Is an LLC also for a youtuber who created a channel to be a blogger and who doesnt upload videos and nothing more? Is a LLC necessary for a youtuber who uploads videos but doesnt monetize? Is there a higher risk of making a video of a product review showing a product that fails?
No -- an LLC is not absolutely necessary -- like in the way insurance on your house is not absolutely necessary BUT it is a REALLY good idea. I recommend to all my clients that they form an LLC -- even if they are not making money -- the legal protection from lawsuits is the key.

Thanks for the info. I have 2 questions I would like to ask.:
When starting a TH-cam page(s), do I need to jump straight out the gate with an LLC?? ... or can I start a personal account to get rolling, then form an LLC a little later - before the channel becomes popular?
Secondly, If I launch [say] 5 Channels at one time, should I create these pages under a personal account -- then once things get going, should I then wrap the 5 channels under 1 LLC? ... or would I need 5 LLC's?

Hey Real World! The main advantage is that you can write off MORE business expenses than you can with an S. S is good if you want your business to have an "independent" life away from its shareholders -- I put TH-camrs in LLCs to allow them more active management of their businesses. Ian, thanks for this very informative video, I am a new TH-camr and soon I plan to set up an LLC for my channel. Not just to protect me but also to "run it like a business." After all, if I buy equipment or something like that, I want to be able to write it off.
What I don't understand is, does Google pay me directly? How do I get them to pay my LLC instead? That's one piece I don't understand. Thank you.
Long-term I think my goal is to own a holding company with the TH-cam LLC as part of it, and another company underneath it for rental properties, and who knows maybe someday some other businesses as part of it, too. But that gets legally quite complicated.

Hey brother I have a question. I teach about the Bible in my TH-cam channel and my financial advisor is recommending me to create an educational nonprofit for my channel and then pay myself a salary. Is that the best shot, or is an LLC the best option? My concern with creating a nonprofit organization is that all the money spent has to be justified legally and I wouldn’t be able to cash out a big Amount of money randomly from the corp’s debit card

I don't typically voice my opinions on people on my channels. It's mostly theories about games on this one and information based on research and experience on the other (also a lot of opinion and I state that as a disclaimer on that channel, alternative healing methods). Is it still better to have an LLC? You mentioned I can research myself and probably pay a fee of around a few hundred dollars. Is that per year or is it a one-time fee? Thx.
It's always better to have an LLC to protect you. $200 is a one time fee, but you also have to pay taxes -- some states have a minimum tax per year. You have to check that out for your state. Thank you for watching!

Edit: It looks like in Canada I can't get an LLC. I already have a registered small business. The next step would be to Incorporate it once I make more than $30K a year and can have tax numbers. That's interesting to know.
I am a Californian and the state charges LLCs $800/yr from my understanding. Nevada is a no state tax state, but my understanding is that if you live in California you cannot get around CA’s LLC or business fees or taxes by opening a company or LLC as a Nevada business if you don’t reside there. Is this true?

Good insight on LLC but I have questions. Is the LLC necessary for any and all new youtubers? (zero-day youtube accounts). Is an LLC also for a youtuber who created a channel to be a blogger and who doesnt upload videos and nothing more? Is a LLC necessary for a youtuber who uploads videos but doesnt monetize? Is there a higher risk of making a video of a product review showing a product that fails?
No -- an LLC is not absolutely necessary -- like in the way insurance on your house is not absolutely necessary BUT it is a REALLY good idea. I recommend to all my clients that they form an LLC -- even if they are not making money -- the legal protection from lawsuits is the key.

What if the TH-camr has a channel controlled by a non statutory entity? Wouldn't a non statutory entity with insurance/bonding cover the risk just as well if not better?

@@GabeWave99 Hey ABC -- I am obviously super sensitive to liability concerns for my TH-camr clients, and so I would say right away -- I mean why not? It does cost a little, but the protections it can offer are enormous.

However, this company should be owned by a local corporation here in Switzerland that will exist only in a few months.
