418980km/260342miles is not too bad, my late friend had a Mercedes 407D which had done a bit more than 500.000km (310000+ miles) and still ran great, it never missed a day of work and never broke down... it did not like to start in the winther tho, but in the summer no problems! Engine had never been opened or renovated and it never ever broke down, he traded it in for a 5 year old Sprinter which end up costing him a fortune in parts and repairs...
My late stepfather bought a 1983 w123 200D merc back in 1997 with 527000+ on the clock which was already stopped and he used that car for about 6-7 years. Probably that car went on for 700.000+ but not going wrong once. It rotted away before it broke down… good old days
I am more impressed with the starter that held its own for so long and by the looks of it, it still was perfectly fine. As for the engine, obviously it would start as long as it gets fuel.

If it has genuinely sat that long without being started prior to this thats amazing but not massively surprising as these old mercs were bullet proof. Great engines.

i had one and it was insane loud at 90kmh and way underpowered. Later i had a 508 and that was bullitproof and less loud, and then i had a 613 and that was the 6 cilinder version and that was a beast!
Enjoyed the video. 2 things never quit in this film. Those guys getting that truck to start and that engine never quitting after it started. Those older Mercedes were engineered simple, strong and reliable. Good filming.
I once had to change a clutch on my ford transit in the mid 1970 and I lived in a village in Derbyshire England ,it was snowing like a bastard ,I was lay on a old door in the street outside my house taking the gearbox out I took it out and fitted the new clutch put it ok back together and the van not being used for months had frozen up ,it blew out all the core plugs so I put them back and filled it up with water then I hear water running out of the engine and it was coming from the core plug at the back of the flywheel which I didn't know was there so I took the gearbox out again and sorted the core plug . I've been cold in my life but never as cold as that , mind you I'd be around 26 then now I'm 70 and still remember it like yesterday !!!
You wouldn't like doing glow plugs on a 2002 ford 7.3 Powerstroke during winter in Alaska. Was definitely below freezing i had to do it in intervals, going in the house every so ofter to warm back up. Also had work the next day and only got 5 hours or less of sleep.
I remember having changed a head gasket on a old Lada in the middle of a rain storm, and also... in the middle of the night, with just basic tools, no jacket and just a flashlight... guess what, the car did run several more yrs after that. That's to say some car and truck brands are veeeery strong and forgiving. The older the better.
So cool to see things like this. In about 10-20 years there will be so many cars with so much electrical components inside that you can not manually start them or have their chips corroded so much that its not worth the effort anymore...
agree on this and it will be horrible! if you want to restore cars that are classed vintage in the future it will probably take programming skills,like the vintage cars we got now where you can use a screwdriver on a starter engine with a bad solenoid,almost everything is pretty logical if you think enough:p
skwee igelkott The problem is, electrical boards and circuits have all kinds of metals in/around them that rust/decay/etc over time... So all the cars we drive today and will be found as 'barn finds' 40-70 years from now will not be able to start unless you have a pristine circuit board with you. Unless the car was stored in a barn with relatively low weather conditions able to reach it, that might do the trick.
this model was my father's first van, the first vacation at sea we did with that van, we slept in it until we reached the seaside! my dad sold the van to a friend and after more than 10 years of use it cut it to scrap metal, and the car cabin kept it, after 15 years I saw the car cabin in a yard, I almost started crying :((((
if you have one of these vans and you've changed the fuel filter/pre filter then you don't need to suck the fuel through like at 12:05, there is a priming pump :) it's next to the oil top up for the injection pump. unscrew it and pump away until fuel comes out the top!
У меня 2010 году был такой 409l, только бензиновый, 2.3 литра, 90 л.с. длинная база (почти 8 метров) бывшая МЧС, перегородка в переднем оттлелении два ряда сидений, в заднем отделении были большие отверстия по бокам для погрузки носилок,( они были заделаны и получился спальный отдел на 6 мест, двух ярусные койки) весь в хроме. Агонь, Аппарат. Есть ещо фото на 2драйв ру, очень редкая модификация

418980km/260342miles is not too bad, my late friend had a Mercedes 407D which had done a bit more than 500.000km (310000+ miles) and still ran great, it never missed a day of work and never broke down... it did not like to start in the winther tho, but in the summer no problems!
Engine had never been opened or renovated and it never ever broke down, he traded it in for a 5 year old Sprinter which end up costing him a fortune in parts and repairs...
My late stepfather bought a 1983 w123 200D merc back in 1997 with 527000+ on the clock which was already stopped and he used that car for about 6-7 years. Probably that car went on for 700.000+ but not going wrong once. It rotted away before it broke down… good old days

Amazing how things work after so many years. Probably not the most comfy of rides, but hey functional, purely functional.
I am more impressed with the starter that held its own for so long and by the looks of it, it still was perfectly fine.
As for the engine, obviously it would start as long as it gets fuel.

and that was the 6 cilinder version and that was a beast!

I hate working on cars in cold weather, I'm in L.A. anyone that works on cars in cold conditions has all my respect ✌
I once had to change a clutch on my ford transit in the mid 1970 and I lived in a village in Derbyshire England ,it was snowing like a bastard ,I was lay on a old door in the street outside my house taking the gearbox out I took it out and fitted the new clutch put it ok back together and the van not being used for months had frozen up ,it blew out all the core plugs so I put them back and filled it up with water then I hear water running out of the engine and it was coming from the core plug at the back of the flywheel which I didn't know was there so I took the gearbox out again and sorted the core plug . I've been cold in my life but never as cold as that , mind you I'd be around 26 then now I'm 70 and still remember it like yesterday !!!
You wouldn't like doing glow plugs on a 2002 ford 7.3 Powerstroke during winter in Alaska. Was definitely below freezing i had to do it in intervals, going in the house every so ofter to warm back up. Also had work the next day and only got 5 hours or less of sleep.
Well at start is cold but after some time you get use to it and hands are warm.
I remember having changed a head gasket on a old Lada in the middle of a rain storm, and also... in the middle of the night, with just basic tools, no jacket and just a flashlight... guess what, the car did run several more yrs after that. That's to say some car and truck brands are veeeery strong and forgiving. The older the better.

In about 10-20 years there will be so many cars with so much electrical components inside that you can not manually start them or have their chips corroded so much that its not worth the effort anymore...
agree on this and it will be horrible! if you want to restore cars that are classed vintage in the future it will probably take programming skills,like the vintage cars we got now where you can use a screwdriver on a starter engine with a bad solenoid,almost everything is pretty logical if you think enough:p
skwee igelkott The problem is, electrical boards and circuits have all kinds of metals in/around them that rust/decay/etc over time... So all the cars we drive today and will be found as 'barn finds' 40-70 years from now will not be able to start unless you have a pristine circuit board with you.
Unless the car was stored in a barn with relatively low weather conditions able to reach it, that might do the trick.

if you have one of these vans and you've changed the fuel filter/pre filter then you don't need to suck the fuel through like at 12:05, there is a priming pump :) it's next to the oil top up for the injection pump. unscrew it and pump away until fuel comes out the top!
