    Nice video. Sadly, steering components in vehicles of this age must be considered consumables. It's the years or the miles, but both will do a number on these components; pumps, racks, crosslinks, steering boxes, they all wear and tear with time. Just replaced the electronic steering rack in a 2013 Crosstrek XV at 92k. Just did the steering crosslink on a 1987 535is. Consumables get consumed. Both were expensive repairs. A Crosstrek steering rack goes for near $1000 for the part alone, but I was pleased with the $200 labor, plus $85 realignment charge. I always request OEM parts new from the box on steering components.
    Sorry about your rack. Looks like your whole steering system will be brand new very soon. I like your attitude and methodology. You speak well, which makes it a pleasure to listen. Thank you.

    Just replaced my 02 wrx steering rack with an 06 sti rebuilt rack and a used Jdm pump and the steering is smooth and easy but has a slight whine. I replaced my hoses with Samco and an Iag high pressure line. No leaks 👍🏼

    In my opinion, you answered your own question at 23:00 when you explain fluid leaking from the boots. The only way this can happen is from bad inner seals and would also explain the difficulty in your steering. Once the seal is compromised, it allows water and dirt into the rack assembly which will cause performance loss over time. It's about $45 for the rebuild kit (non-oem). Not a job for the faint of heart but no doubt you can pull it off. You can get by without using the special tools, just takes (A BUNCH) of time ;)

    Check your steering shaft ujoints. Never had it on a subaru but I had a toyota tundra that had that problem and it was a combo of the steering rack and the steering shaft ujoins were blown out

    If anyones still have this issue. Lucky for you its only a 30 dollar part. Its the steering knuckle between the steering wheel and the steering rack. Literally two screws

    @DoneWaiting ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @ the 3:40 mark you could go ahead and tap that old tentioner bolt with the dead blow a little instead of your expensive alternator.

    If you had annealed the old double copper washer it probably would have worked. To anneal a used copper washer you heat the washer on a wire till glowing red then quench quickly in cold water. It returns the copper to a soft condition that will mold to the surfaces. Old aviation trick.

    Best quotes of the day: Use a rubber mallet to prevent damage... and I don't want to say it's the power steering rack, but it's the power steering rack. ( I'm not saying it was the aliens but it was definitely the aliens.)😂😂😂
    Unfortunately I'm in the same boat right now change the power steering pump flushed it all out and it's still binds intermittently

    Can't wait to see the conclusion to this. Just had to replace the steering rack on my 09. Hopefully you don't have to go there. I'd probably do steering linkages and any joints that move with steering next.

  • @ThomasP187
    @ThomasP187 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Have you ever looked at the steering linakage joint. Its kind like a "u" joint for the steering rack. I beleieve it has rubber bushings amd over time they wear out also rust can ne an issue with these

    same problem as you. I replaced the pump with a cardon, the steering wheel is tight and I changed the hoses and the soap system does not help. I have been suffering for two months now. This is a weak point for Subaru this year.

  • @daniex3075
    @daniex3075 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think mines doing the same, I was scared shit thinking it was oil but it was to clear to be oil because I need to change my oil and it’s dark so at least that’s good news but my leaks seems to be coming from a hose or pump but I’ll tare it down on the weekend

      Leaking steering rack. I’m still currently driving the car. It hasn’t got any worse or any better. A new steering rack is needed. Deciding on oem or rebuilt options.
