Come Hike With Me #2: Long Range Traverse (Gros Morne NP, Newfoundland)

  • In late September 2019, I made my annual return to Gros Morne National Park in western Newfoundland - this time to conquer the Long Range Traverse. I could not have been more excited for another opportunity to see the epic almost-fjords with weather that promised to make the stars align. Thankfully all worked out and the journey remained as enlightening as last year's trek of the Northern Traverse.
With a bit of luck and a bit of planning, I was able to experience both a flawless sunset at Western Brook Pond as well as a wild Caribou roaming over the mountainous tundra environment.
This video should give you an idea of what the trek looks like as a solo backpacker, filmed over the course of the 3 days it took to complete.

I love this area! Your photography was fantastic, thanks so much for sharing it with us. I did this hike in 2009 and it was incredible, my dream trip! We had a little scare because Hurricane Bill passed by NFLD at that time and we were storm stayed for a bit but we managed to finish safely. Thanks again for filming your adventure, well done! :) :)

Much appreciated! That would be mighty frightening but I'm glad it worked out safely. I love hearing about the nostalgia it brings up in others, it helps keep me motivated to get more trips locked into the schedule too

In terms of general notes I'd say do whatever you can to cut down on packing non-essentials because heavy packs can bring down the mood, and opt for lighter weight trail running shoes that don't retain much water if possible. The plateau is very very wet so feet are sure to be damp by day 2, but if you can mitigate that impact you'll likely avoid blisters or other such unpleasantness! Have fun out there, it's a memorable one

@@curtis.strange thank you! Hot tips for sure. Buying quick drying trail runners as we speak. 🙌

I still have flashbacks to the cold, wet feet that came as a result 😂

Great video. We've done Gros Morne Mountain but not the Long Range Traverse .. it would be spectacular at the top of the gorge!

Sorry I'm a bit late! Appreciate that greatly. There's definitely always next time to try one of those treks, I know for sure I'll be back for round 3 sometime soon

Great video. If I understand it right, it's a 45-minute walk to the place where you board the boat, 2 hours in the boat to reach the other side? then, how long did it take you from being dropped off from the boat until the first spot where you did the tent photoshoot? I have limited time in the area but still would like to squeeze this hike in if possible. Also, if you hike down the gorge back to the same spot, is there a boat trip to get back? thanks

I don't think the boat trip was quite that long because technically you only do half of it if going on the trail. I'm told they only allow pickup at the bottom in life or death emergency scenarios, but there are private tours that do day trips for the photo opportunity. It's more expensive of course but would be an option for you if time is the limiting factor.

Great video :) is renting a car necessary or getting around by taxi easy?

Thanks for watching! Transport wise it depends on how much you're looking to explore. If your primary desire is doing Long Range/Northern Traverse you can easily do that with a cab by calling in advance. All the towns in the area of the park are very small so you want to be very efficient with tax requests because turn around times are long. You might actually have more success hitchhiking to different trailheads if that's something your travel buddies are okay with

Amazing! Have you ever thought about doing the east coast trail up there? also how much did it coast you for permits and the boat ride if you don't mind? Cheers Kohl

Thank ya. I think I'll do a section of the east coast trail next year, it looks pretty epic. But I don't think i can commit to doing the full thing because after a few days I'd get sick of looking at the same coast line haha. I think the permit and boat ride were around $60-70 each. The main thing I remember is that there's a discount from the usual boat rate because you only go half way 😄
