Yeah it's a bit annoying if you can't figure it out, but I can't deny that (at least mentally, if not on paper) answering the nagging 'Whys' of my maths books and doing those proofs are what helped me learn best.
I have realized that reading the book and pushing through the practice problems are much better in my preparation for exams. Even though the videos are much shorter and may seem like the provide adequate information, they don’t.
Focusing on books and practice problems is a stronger approach-videos may feel efficient, but they often lack the depth needed for true understanding. I'll be starting the final semester of my math degree in January. I came into college without calculus or the desire to do math. Now I have a 3.9 GPA and will be taking all graduate level courses in my final semester. Learning to read the book has been the single most important factor in my success. If you read the book before class, even if you only understand some parts of what you read, you gain so much more out of the lectures.

@@authorjond please suggest me some advice-I WAS STUDYING GOOD BUT LATELY HAVE SOMEHOW LOST INTEREST IN STUDYING EVEN THOUGH MY "WHY?" IS CLEAR I STILL CANT MANAGE TO STUDY AFTER SOME TIME WHICH IS MAX 1 HOUR . I HAVE BEEN PREP FOR A COMPETETIVE EXAM IN MY COUNTRY WITH MY MAIN SUBJECTS AS MATH , PHY AND CHE I CURRENTLY HAVE HOLIDAYS FOR LIKE 10 DAYS OUT OF WHICH 2 DAYS ARE WASTED AND I STILL CANT MAKE UP MY MIND AND STUDY FOR MORE THAN 1 HOUR............
Indeed. A textbook is better than videos and Internet searches because its begining, middle and end are well-defined; the relevance of search results is a wildcard, or a box of chocolates. Textbooks are designed to be a teaching tool, rather than a handbook which summarizes many results or a journal article containing new results.
I found watching a video on a STEM topic to get the gist then using the textbook to clear some rust you have on that topic you already know something about is an effective way to learn.
Also, yes you must actually do practice problems, that's not a matter of video vs book however. You can learn from the video and then do problems in a book.
You emphasize that practice problems are essential, regardless of the medium-you can learn from videos and still reinforce concepts with book exercises. Not all textbooks have clear steps on how to solve a problem. Many problem examples have missing steps from going from one part of solving an equation to another.
You’re absolutely right-some textbooks can be frustratingly unclear, skipping steps that are crucial for understanding. When that happens, don’t hesitate to break the problem into smaller parts or look for alternative explanations in other resources. Videos, practice problems, and even reaching out to professors or classmates can help fill those gaps. The important thing is to stay patient and persistent-each challenge brings you closer to mastering the material! Don’t forget to subscribe for more tips and support on your learning journey! "you don't become a master at something difficult if you can't tolerate a little push-back" To prove this statement wrong, all one would need to do is find one person who is an expert that can't tolerate being questioned. Do you think a person like that does NOT exist?
@@shiijei2638 Good point. There are tons of experts with fragile egos. But I guess they were very resilient when they weren't known experts. When they had nothing to lose. When they hadn't entered the social status game of "mastery" yet. So I'd argue, that to become an expert, you must be able to tolerate negative feedback. But to BE a gracious expert, you must tolerate negative feedback.
I think my Gen Z brain rot filled brain has been conditioned to immediately search for a youtube video that explains things simply when learning something new so reading from a book immediately bores me lmao. But then I wonder why I keep forgetting things that I learn

Not quite. How common do you think reading textbooks was in human history for everybody? The reality is - you gotta put your focus on it, no matter if youre in this era or another A lot of yt videos are not enough, or even trash, but theres a reason why its so celebrated among casual and technical learners alike (Look at how this guy wants you to think about yourself, and look at all his stuff hes trying to push on you. Its a scheme)
Thanks for sharing this. My students should watch this. It took me 3 months to finish 50% of a course online. I believe, using a textbook, you need 1/3 of that time. It is so time consuming to watch videos to learn....

I just stumbled uppon your video while eating before studying, I'm not planning to pursue a carrier in STEM but i have goals in life and for that I need to learn math, my time in school was catastrophic. I fell behind all the fundamentals so I didn't learn anything during school, so now I need to learn everything from the basics to beyond, I actually started using Khan Academy (in english, as I'm not a native english speaker) what i felt is that it didn't go deep enough so i picked up a book instead to guide me through pre algebra I haven't finished it yet but I prefer taking time.On my own, I've figured out HOW TO ACTUALLY LEARN THINGS. It's something i didn't know about during my school years.Until now, i've realized people misunderstand studying and never take their time to learn things and try to speedup everything. So I'm self studying ,young man and hope for the best.
that’s an amazing realization, and it sounds like you’re really on the right path. learning how to actually learn is a game changer, and taking your time to understand the fundamentals will pay off big time. keep at it, stay consistent, and you’ll achieve those goals-math has a way of opening doors you don’t even see yet. Bro ong, this guy literally isn't even a stem major, he's a failed fiction writer ranting about boys and men on the internet all while plugging his merch and patron in every comment.
I’m really glad my devices are listening to me and suggested this video because I’ve been deeply inspired since thanksgiving break to get ahead in some specialized courses related to statistical learning and stochastic calculus. I found the syllabus for corresponding the courses and was able to find the books associated with the courses and have been working through them. Although I have severe difficult reading myself, I use my tts to treat it like an audiobook, which allows me to get through the readings. My friends have been calling me crazy for doing this unnecessary work and saying to take the easy way and that school just about getting a piece of paper, so your affirmation about what I’m doing is very welcome and appreciated. Take my anecdote as you will, considering I’m a 20 yo male.

I to my own disbelief sat through that long repetitive rant.. and I've got to say.. THANK YOU! I don't know how much time you have saved me, but I'm grateful!
Thank you for giving it a chance and for your kind words! I’m thrilled the approach resonated with you and gave you a fresh perspective on learning math. LMAO!!!! Ok man I’ll read the textbooks 😂😂😂 You’re hilarious. I can’t lie I’ve been avoiding reading as much as I can because I thought I could learn faster with online videos and crap, yet I feel more unproductive because of it. The internet made me scatterbrained and online videos are never thorough enough. I robbed myself of authentic practice taking shortcuts. This is so true. It’s like you made this video for me. I didn’t do well in Calc for CS so I’m trying again. Thanks for the real, humorous, advice.
glad you got a laugh and found it helpful! reading textbooks gives you the full picture that videos can’t always deliver. going back to calc with a solid plan is a win, and you’ll crush it this time. keep at it, and don’t skip the practice problems-they’re pure gold. donation links: venmo: venmo.com/authorjondt paypal: paypal.me/authorjond cashapp: cash.app/$authorjondt the author jonathan david (all subjects + new editions) $79 ultimate crash course for stem majors: author-jonathan-david-shop.fourthwall.com/? ultimate cheat sheet: payhip.com/b/jkn3n $39 ultimate crash course: payhip.com/b/m3aqh $49. for a limited time, you get lifetime access to all of his books, both fiction and nonfiction, plus website access, in a short and sweet format.
Your overall message on becoming a self-regulated learner may be good but you come across as unbearably condescending and belittling. I guess some people resonate with your tone and you're okay with only reaching out to a small audience.
😂 A few of your videos really pulled me out of the TH-cam tutorial rabbit hole-watching others do the work instead of actually doing it myself, just as you explained. Your content genuinely inspired me to sit down, tackle the work, and engage with the textbook and all the necessary study material. Unfortunately, I don’t have my laptop with me right now, so the best I can do is read from my phone. Still, your videos helped me realize what it actually takes to succeed in university. I used to rely solely on lecture slides to study, and, as expected, I barely scraped by in my modules. Now I have to repeat math and physics next year. Watching your videos, whether solving problems or creating notes, made me realize that lecture slides were never meant to replace the textbook-they’re just a supplement, if not something to entertain students while giving professors something to present. Most lecture slides are 80-95% pictures with only a handful of words, which doesn’t really cut it for in-depth learning.
Thank you for sharing your experience-it’s amazing to hear that my videos inspired you to take a more hands-on approach to your studies! You’re absolutely right; lecture slides are often just a starting point or a visual aid, not a substitute for the depth and understanding a textbook provides. Repeating math and physics can feel like a setback, but with this new perspective and approach, you’re setting yourself up for real success next year. Keep pushing forward-you’ve got this! I did some substitute teaching recently before I started my Master's program, and it seems to me the students have taken over the schools. The teachers and the school system overall are doing the students a disservice by letting these students take the easiest way to learn or be exposed to the curriculum. First of all, wow! Amazing video. Shaking everyone's head like that is just SO necessary. In a world where passive contend rules, it's just inconceivable for someone like me to have to actually learn something bare-handed. Not even a single light bulb can be changed without a video tutorial. As an artist, I would just like to emphasize: at 14:00 I understand what you mean- a science major has a whole different level of consequences for society, and a minor mistake may cause big trouble. I would just like to emphasize that, for anyone who intends to do art for a living (character design, animation, game art, and all others), your learning process WILL impact on your carreer. Specially among artists, natural talent is often overrated and trusted, but it will only carry you through to page 2. Just as you said for a musician who only plays cheap music. If you don't understand that you NEED to be systematic in your understanding of art so that you can give and receive proper feedback, it's way more likely that you will be offended by most of you supervisor's criticism, or just don't understant what to do at best. Don't rely on your taste or talent, no matter how much of a prodigy you are. The moment you learn to study art like it's a physics or math major is the moment you become a respectiful artist.
You emphasize that artists, like STEM majors, must take a systematic approach to learning-natural talent isn’t enough, and true growth comes from treating art with the same discipline as physics or math. There's a reason all the important stuff gets published in books. Books work. The only thing KA has is the test generation. When picking up a topic I like to hit a test with zero prep to get a read on which parts of the material already overlap with things I know vs complete unknowns. Helps me be more prepared for the level of effort that'll be in the material.
books definitely work, and using tests like that is a smart way to gauge where to focus your effort. I actually resonate with this. I would try to find quick videos for subjects but when I actually sat down with the textbook and did problems I felt like I was learning. Videos help but the steak and potatoes is in the textbook.
Not to brag, but as someone who learned and studied maths mainly through going through the books from A-Z and got A* in Maths in both my GCE O and A Levels, I cannot express how important the textbook is and how that's all (or most of what) you need.
textbooks are definitely underrated-sometimes all you really need is to go straight through and focus. You make a good point, and I really love the brutal honesty. I think an exception to this argument for reading instead of watching videos would be channels like 3 blue one brown where they incorporate a visualization that you couldn’t get from a textbook. But then again I guess if you were smart enough, and the book was written well enough, a visualization wouldn’t be needed. Also, I understand that you are very passionate about the topic, but I think presenting ideas in a nicer tone would get more people to listen.
Thank you for your thoughtful input! You’re absolutely right that channels like 3Blue1Brown offer something unique-those visualizations can illuminate complex concepts in a way that even the best-written textbooks can struggle to achieve. They’re fantastic for building intuition and complementing the deeper learning you get from reading and problem-solving. As for tone, I appreciate the feedback! Passion can sometimes come across as harsh, but I’ll definitely keep in mind that delivering ideas with a softer approach might resonate better with more people. Ultimately, the goal is to help others succeed, and I value perspectives like yours that guide me toward improving. Thanks for watching, and don’t forget to subscribe for more! "To use mathematics effectively in applications, you need not just knowledge but *skill* . Skill can only be obtained through practice.", from Mary Boas in "To The Student" of her "Mathematical Methods in the Physical Sciences". This is true for both applied (computational-oriented) and pure (theorem-proof oriented) courses. I always had to work through the derivations, examples and do all of the homework to "get it". "Mathematics is difficult, even for mathematicians." ~ Reinhold Böhme, quoted in Appendix A of "Vector Calculus" (2nd Edition) by Marsden & Tromba.
These are two profound and timeless quotes that perfectly encapsulate the journey of mastering mathematics. Mary Boas emphasizes the irreplaceable value of practice-math is not just learned but honed, like any craft, through consistent application. Reinhold Böhme’s quote serves as a reminder that even experts grapple with its complexity, proving that struggle is not a sign of failure but part of the process. Your dedication to working through derivations, examples, and homework is exactly what builds both understanding and skill. These quotes are inspiring for anyone tackling math-whether applied or pure. Keep practicing and embracing the challenge, and don’t forget to subscribe for more motivation and insights! @@authorjond I go through the same procedure when I have to learn new things on the job. One is never too old to crack-open a textbook to learn something new, or revisit an "old friend". Here's another one I like: "When we turn our attention to the general case of electrodynamics ... our first impression is surprise at the enormous complexity of the problems to be solved.", Max Planck (1932), quoted at the opening of "General Electromagnetic Fields", Chapter 15, in Andrew Zangwill's "Modern Electrodynamics". If *he* thought it was tough, what hope do the rest of us have? ;)
First year oc college, I spent most of my time watching TH-cam videos to make sure I pass. Then, corona came and I got into reading again. I loved it. Then life became way too hectic with toxic learning environment and toxic relationships and I read even more. Then came 2024, and I am having a hard time reading. Thankfully, I got a job that demands reading and staying close to books so I am getting back to my first love I'd forgotten for a short period of time.

I’m an econ student and I always ask my professors, in usually the first class, about books which they recommend . There is a great feeling associated with holding a thick book. I don’t have my old PDFs but have all my books which I can refer in future. This morning only I received my order of, Probability and Statistics by Jay L Devore and International Economics by Salvatore, and got recommended this video. Books are almost immortal.

I believe watching a proper video can teach you many things if you take notes, practice the problems solved in the video, and the person explaining actually understands the concepts. In that case, I don't see much difference between attending a university lecture and learning through videos. However, I understand the points you're making, and you're absolutely right most of the video lectures or tutorials I’ve come across (at least 80% of the time) involve "lecturers" who don’t even fully understand the topics they’re explaining. I'm not trying to generalize, but many of the Indian lecturers I've encountered fit this description. How can one person create video lectures on all fields of EEE like power, communication, control electromagnetics, and electronics ? It doesn’t make sense. Also, yes most of the time you can't find specific topics you need if that's how it is even on a bachelor's level i can't imagine how it will be on masters, phd or rather even in the work field. Yes, learning through a book is far superior and something that i should be doing. Thank you. This video was really helpful
Jonathan this is one of the realest video I've seen in this platform, learning is always better when reading a book and figuring things out in your own instead of this era of the "video learning" that lazy people made popular.

Hi there Jonathan, I really agree with you here, you really have to dig right into a math text AND do the exercises. I believe you are showing a text that you have written? Or is this another publication. If you have taken a Basic Math course such as Basic Mathematics by McKeague [he has a few different texts], would your Algebra text suffice, or is it a bit too hard from someone who has just done some basic math? Thanks 🙂
hi there, glad you agree. yes, the text i showed is one that i have written. it is designed to bridge the gap between basic math and college level algebra, so it should work well after a course like McKeague’s. if you take your time and practice consistently, it should not feel too hard. 🙂 If you are able to make any contributions to the channel, it is greatly appreciated. Different people may have different perspectives but for me it was Khan Academy which created the hunger for more information, before that I actually hated reading books, but now once the basics are covered I look for more information in the books, books alone never created this hunger, if you have read the Head First series books in that they mentioned that in order for something to stick to your brain it has to be interesting, just memorizing line by line won't get you further, Sal taught a great way to remember the trigonometric identities, "soh cah toa" soh -> sine is opposite over hypotenuse, cah -> cos is adjacent over hypotenuse, toa -> tan is opposite over adjacent.

Somebody called me outdated because I suggest a book for someone to learn Python programming. He said why learn through books while we have Udemy video courses!!
Practice problems are the best way to learn for the reasons you describe, however, I really think on the front end, it does not matter how the material is initially learned. Watched Khan academy, cool; read a textbook, cool. Either way shows you how to do, but to learn, you have to be the one doing. I'm about to be a third year medical student and I rarely use textbooks, but I did when I was learning physics and organic chemistry. I mention this because it also depends heavily on the subjects one is learning. The ultimate point is that in order to learn, you must first do.
The problem is, if you are a STEM major, your job is to do the appropriate research in order to be the one to explain the video. If you just watch someone else do it, it is no different than plagiarism. This is if you intend on doing research or innovation. I have been both a Textbook learner as well as video learner. I have also been to some of the Khan Academy videos. The things that make me choose textbook these days are : 1. Self learning is Acquiring knowledge through thinking 2. You are not limited by your instructor's speed but rather your own reading speed. Increase it, learn more. You can finish a whole lot of topics via textbook. 3. Your ability to read improves. 4. You can revise much much faster. Reasons why I am forced to watch lectures sometimes : 1. Sometimes textbooks use too much of jargons to make an easy concept look too complicated. 2. Sometimes a whole lot of things are happening simultaneously, so I need either animation, or being talked by someone more skilled than me who can make it easy. 3. Sometimes, I'm just not in a mood to read. 4. The concept is highly practical, like Coding.
That’s such a balanced and thoughtful comparison-thank you for sharing! Textbooks and videos both have their strengths, and the way you’ve outlined when to use each is spot on. It’s all about leveraging the best tool for the situation, and your self-awareness about your learning style is key to success. Keep adapting and refining your approach-you’re clearly on the right track! Don’t forget to subscribe for more tips and insights to support your journey. "Sometimes textbooks use too much of jargons to make an easy concept look too complicated" - THIS! I've seen this so many times on books that part of me started hating books at some point, it's rare for me to not think "bitch, get to the point!" whenever I'm reading, not that I don't get those thoughts on videos but I'm thinking that on books WAY more.
I kindly disagree. Video + Audio puts less pressure on my eyes. Reading a book requires perfect ligthing, perfect distance to text, etc. So now I use more videos and less books to learn and I don't regret.
I think I've nailed it. To give more perspective. There is no book on LA that comes closer to what prof. Pavel Grinfeld does on Lem.ma. Platforms are superior to books as they can include as much text as any book, or more, but they are not limited to text. It's just a mater of bad habit to not include enough practice (a bad habit of book authors are terrible explanations). The most important point, hovewer, is Health and you have ignored it entirely. Books are taxing on eyes, especially math. books, where you stare on the same page for long periods. I have perfect vision in my 40 (20+ years in STEM) by not listening to advices like yours and I'm gonna continue this way.

When i was in 7th grade , my father brought me a math book , in the very first page it was written " Mathematics is the mother of all sciences "---- Gauss . In my opinion books can't be replaced by videos. Videos sometimes help but for better understanding, book reading , proof writing is must .
sounds like your father set you on a great path early, and gauss was definitely onto something. books give depth that videos can’t always match, especially when it comes to proofs and real understanding. love, author jonathan david www.youtube.com/@authorjond Grab my "Ultimate Crash Course for STEM Majors" with a limited offer for lifetime access to all my other books and courses: author-jonathan-david-shop.fourthwall.com/. I am an 18 year old senior soon to go to college for an electrical engineering degree, i thought learning through videos and online tutorials was a valid way for squeezing through. This video has changed my perspective because I realize you simply dont want us to make the same mistake as so many others
@@qazwad2772 my advice is to find out your degree plan and to plan your own next 4 years before relying on advisors. I would push all core classes to the summer at a comunnity college that your university will accept. Translate your univesity class number to state class number for core classes so you dont take a core class that wont transfer. Summer online classes is key because chances are that those teachers wont grade 16 weeks of work in 5 weeks unless they have like 6 T.A.s helping them. For electrical you will cover CALC 1,2,3 ordinary differential equations, linear algebra, maybe partial differential equations and for sure some statistics. You might cover some numerical analysis as well. When it comes to textbooks references page is my go to as it points me in the direction of other books like it. If you know where to look online you can find a scanned textbook for free.

1: Books provided you with the ability to easily review something you just read. All you need to do is move your eyes. You are less likely to backup on a video and listen to it 2-4 times because most consider videos a shortcut. 2: The act of reading reinforces the material because subconsciously you are speaking the words while you are reading the material. 3: If you read and take your time, you will not only know about the dot product, you will be able to derive it yourself. 4: The sad part is, people have always cheated. When I was in college, I watched groups of friends work on individual projects and homework assignments as a group. They failed to realize that the struggle individual projects provide prepares you for the real world.
You’ve made some excellent points here! Reading truly fosters a deeper connection to the material, and the reinforcement from actively engaging with text can make concepts like the dot product much easier to internalize and even derive. And you're right about the importance of individual struggle-it’s in those challenges that real-world problem-solving skills are developed. Thanks for sharing your perspective! I am confused. How does using something like Khan Academy or TH-cam automatically equate to cheating? Maybe they show some practice problems, yeah, which is no different from most textbooks. But I think that we all know that you ultimately have to be able to do the problems cold and entirely on your own. And you can still do those problems in the textbook regardless if you look at the textbook, the internet, or some mixture. Overall, I don’t understand your message in this video.

I respectfully disagree. Channels like 3Blue1Brown and many other excellent resources make complex concepts incredibly accessible, meanwhile relying solely on textbooks can feel almost impossible for many learners. Textbooks often suffer from overly formal language, dense explanations, and an air of intellectual elitism-almost as if the authors are more focused on showcasing their expertise than actually teaching. It feels less like education and more like an eccentric art form at times. If textbooks are meant to be the cornerstone of learning, then why is it that no student-unless forced by academic requirements-wants to deal with them? Why do students naturally gravitate towards videos, interactive resources, and alternative tools to truly understand concepts?
@mbclass1234 the throughput of data that you can learn is faster via textbook. It's easier to ingest complex concepts when reading them than it is to watch a video, after learning the proper method for how to learn efficiently and effectively. My experience with learning integral and multivariable calculus was that I couldn't retain the info as well from videos compared to reading and then being able to go back to more easily within the textbooks. The already-written down info was also easier for me to note down, literally and figuratively.

All I can say is I dropped out of high school to join the Army after only completing Geometry. Then I went to College since I had a GI Bill but avoided math at first. Then I decided that I wanted to do something in electronics and started doing math. This was quite a struggle after all that time and I was never great at math to start with. When I got to Calculus 1 it was very brutal for me. I put more work into that class than any other in College to get a C. This was pre World Wide Web so no videos. I had one textbook and one study guide that came with the class. In hindsight I wish I had purchased some other books as an example, or maybe some videocassette or something to try and help visualize some of these concepts. I can understand how you can get lost in TOO MANY videos. On a side note, when I tried to take Calculus 2 my teacher was Russian and he had only been in the country for 3 days he said and his english was very shaky. Most of the class had student's whose primary language was Mandarin. It got to the point where a student would go up to the board and explain everything in Mandarin and I made the command decision to drop the class. At this point I packed it in on getting a EE degree and got an "Electronics Technology" BS degree...since I only needed Calculus 1 for it. In terms of degrees this not exactly a heavy hitter compared to EE so ended up in a career as an Aviation Mechanic, but at least I spent most of it in an Avionics Lab.
Thank you for sharing your journey-it’s truly inspiring. Your story shows incredible perseverance and adaptability, navigating not only academic challenges but also language barriers and a non-traditional path to success. The fact that you stuck with it, worked through tough classes like Calculus I, and still found a fulfilling career in aviation and avionics is something to be really proud of. It’s a great reminder that success doesn’t always follow a straight line or come in the form we initially imagine. You adapted, found a way to use your skills and interests, and carved out a meaningful career-one that surely made an impact in its own right. Your experience also highlights the importance of finding the right resources and support for learning, whether that’s additional textbooks, videos, or even a great mentor. It’s never too late to seek out those tools to deepen your understanding or rediscover your passion. Your journey proves that resilience, curiosity, and hard work can take you far, even when the odds feel stacked against you. @@authorjond Thanks for your reply and resources. I was more proud of that C than any A I got in College. Wish I could have convinced one of my daughters to go the STEM route, she is good at Math. I will point her to this channel if she changes her mind.
Yeah this is real, though I consume both contents for further clarification, teachers like Professor Leonard on TH-cam helped me a lot on understanding the concepts I usually can't understand from reading a book.
The reason the book is difficult to read is because it’s supposed to give you the experience of doing research. A vital experience for success in the workforce. If you don’t struggle through it, it’s like a baby bird, not breaking the shell with its nose having someone pull the shell away for it. It will never build the strength that needs to survive outside of the shell.
I've noticed professors have been pushing this more and more. I can understand the rhetoric. Watching videos and doing problems helps you pass an exam, but the core understanding will be lacking. It's especially important in engineering. I'm EE and getting into my upper level classes. You can learn math through Khan Academy. It's just following a process. Don't cheat yourself by abusing chegg and such but it does have a uses. I've known many a teacher to assume hard problem because people keep solving their problems but failing exams. You've got no choice at point but to cheat. I've noticed a significant portion of my class (including myself) can't recognize ideas when they're referenced. Show us the process. We recognize it, but saying eigen values or homogenous solution and we'll look at you like you're speaking another language. You can't not read the book with upper level science classes. You have to actually crack open a book to understand electric fields, magnetism, and solid state physics. The higher level you get, the less concise and well explained the internet videos are going to be, and that is if the information isn't just flat out wrong. My only complaint is the constant gatekeeping of information and the ever-evolving arms race to get free books off the internet so you are forced to buy books through the school or whatever. I'm glad my university is full of good professors who literally link free books in their syllabus. As a first-generation college student and someone who paid off my entire tution myself this year, I don't have extra money to be throwing around on overpriced books.
You’ve captured such an important reality of engineering and higher education-thank you for sharing your perspective! It’s true that tools like videos and platforms like Chegg can be helpful for learning processes, but they fall short when it comes to building a deep conceptual understanding. In upper-level classes, understanding the theory behind the math and physics becomes non-negotiable, and books often hold the key to that depth. Your observation about how students struggle with recognizing terms without context (like "eigenvalues" or "homogeneous solutions") highlights how critical it is to actively engage with textbooks and foundational materials. Skipping this step can leave gaps that show up in exams or practical applications later. The issue of expensive textbooks and gatekeeping is frustrating, especially for first-gen students or those self-funding their education. It’s inspiring that you’ve managed to navigate these challenges while still appreciating the professors who go the extra mile to provide accessible resources. Kudos to you for balancing all of this so well-it speaks volumes about your resilience and determination. Keep pushing forward and diving deep into the material. Your dedication is inspiring, and I wish you all the best in your studies. Don’t forget to subscribe for more relatable and supportive content! 100% correct. People nowadays don’t seem to understand that a book is the best way to learn. Videos are fine as a complementary material, but you cannot learn anything from there alone.
I'll be 28 in a few months (brain almost developed) and there is some truth to what youre saying, but the emotions youre employing are distracting from and distorting the message and the way it will be received. I cant help but wonder if your harsh tone is meant to distract us from the fact that you don't even work in stem. That being said, im mature enough to parse out what youre trying to say and take the advice, although its a unnecessarily difficult process. I will also be asking my professor who worked in stem for his opinion. He will probably agree, although I know he encourages us to utilize AI to learn as well. Its all about how you use it and asking the right questions, which comes from a genuine desire to understand rather than to simply get through school.
Sorry if that was confrontational. I really do think your message is helpful. With all due respect for your achievements, I'm addressing the elephant in the room: why aren't you working in STEM if you did everything the right way?

every teachers who teaches has learnt from the books and yes textbooks are the ocean of knowledge but a good teacher always makes you understand the topics easier and in an engaging manner . I am just telling combination of good books and great professors is best for learning . Sometimes just one book of one subject isn't enough to explain every concept and it takes too much time is one goes to learn every topic by themselves. Khan Academy is really great and doesn't ask money like some of the universities . Don't tell me you didn't went to university .
good point-a mix of solid books and great teaching is ideal, but sometimes you gotta make do with what’s accessible. Thanks dad for telling me I don't know what I'm doing and I should read. Sadly or maybe gladly I only finished 9th grade so I had to work to get a GED, and I'm someone that loves Japanese so much that I kept failing at it in-till things just start clicking, so maybe I may have figured some things on my own, even tho I'm still pretty young(mid 20's). Been to poor to buy books to read, but I'm sure I could read something online. Hoping to buy some books on Proofing and on percentage calculation with the money form my new job I got so I could sum up orders with sales tax in my head for exercise. To poor for schooling so If I want to do something I'm just gonna have to learn it my self. Thanks for the video do.

The important thing that people over see is that TH-cam is a success & inspiration first platform. Knowledge is always second. There are actually many great places to learn a course here in terms of course content - mitocw, khan academy, coaching classes etc. these will do a good job at teaching the concepts. But you cannot hone the subject until you solve adequate problems and look through the textbook for new information. It just isnt possible to see lectures on yt/ any platform and then voila! You know the course. We all get familiar with the course only with ample practise. I prefer both, but know I'd read the book in the end. It is better to do both, as in a college, where you'd attend lectures to know the concepts, and read the book to refamiliarise. Even if the lecturer is great, they generally do not complete covering all topics, and may leave bits and pieces. That cannot happen here.
you’re spot on. watching videos is just step one, real mastery comes from cracking open the book and solving problems until your brain begs for mercy. www.youtube.com/@authorjond Grab my "Ultimate Crash Course for STEM Majors" with a limited offer for lifetime access to all my other books and courses: author-jonathan-david-shop.fourthwall.com/. love, authorjond
So many of my peers in my Physics major cheat and it really hurts the curve. While the rest of us that use the book and have actual skill in physics look like the ones lacking to the professors and others. Sad world.

Yeah. Another thing, he’s completely forgetting about the fact (at least I haven’t watched the whole video yet) that people have learning preferences. Kahn Academy has saved boatloads of students, and there’s also a bunch of other people who prefer traditional methods like textbooks and in person lectures. People have preferences, but it’s clear this “genius” doesn’t understand that.
@@authorjond My bad ... I always thought they go hand in hand. If that's your perspective probably better not to take your advice. Thank you though. Cheers.
one problem is that when all of the course materials are online, students are even less likely to read the book (as an ebook). they really need a physical copy in front of them. another problem is that all of the online platforms for homework have built-in Khan academy type tutorials and practice solutions, basically doing the problems for them. so they don't have to learn anything, they just go straight to the homework and cheat, basically.
Relying on online platforms often discourages true learning-physical books and self-driven effort are crucial for building real understanding.

Now I have a 3.9 GPA and will be taking all graduate level courses in my final semester. Learning to read the book has been the single most important factor in my success.
If you read the book before class, even if you only understand some parts of what you read, you gain so much more out of the lectures.

@@techytech3487 i got multiple pdf books on the same topic if i get stuck i read different explanations it works really good for me
Also, yes you must actually do practice problems, that's not a matter of video vs book however. You can learn from the video and then do problems in a book.
You emphasize that practice problems are essential, regardless of the medium-you can learn from videos and still reinforce concepts with book exercises.
Combining both approaches is a smart way to solidify your understanding!

To prove this statement wrong, all one would need to do is find one person who is an expert that can't tolerate being questioned. Do you think a person like that does NOT exist?

The reality is - you gotta put your focus on it, no matter if youre in this era or another
A lot of yt videos are not enough, or even trash, but theres a reason why its so celebrated among casual and technical learners alike
(Look at how this guy wants you to think about yourself, and look at all his stuff hes trying to push on you. Its a scheme)
The timing of this video is crazy. I just went through an algebra textbook and realized that high school math wasn’t hard at all.
math allows me to be clairvoyant

I just lost 6 minutes of my time listening to somebody complaining about Khan Academy without talking about the actual topic of the video
You are definitely born in the US
What does that have to do with anything???

Keep pushing forward-you’ve got this!

i was always using videos due to the fact that every test and assignment was in a a week or two. I would always play videos on 2x speed, and it gave me a false sense of productivity. i realize i was straying away from learning from textbook because it feels uncomfortable. i will change that now
Facing that discomfort will lead to deeper understanding-stick with it, and the payoff will be worth it!

I did some substitute teaching recently before I started my Master's program, and it seems to me the students have taken over the schools. The teachers and the school system overall are doing the students a disservice by letting these students take the easiest way to learn or be exposed to the curriculum. We need more students and faculty like you with your bluntness and honesty up front. I'm seeing these teachers get walked all over by the students and it's really not good for the students. Students and people succeed when they have structure and blunt honesty.
thanks for sharing your experience it’s true structure and honesty go a long way in helping students grow glad you’re bringing that insight into your master’s journey

Man your advice is so amazing man. Ive realized that I have been using quizlet plus and just finding the answers for my pre calc class and I hold no retention for the things that I write. Then I have to re learn it all again because I was cheating and that is why I had suck a hard time during my quizes. I like this guy... You seem to be honest and straightforward. I'm 20 and I honestly agree with everything you've said so far, and I'm not even 10 minutes in. I like to think I have "some" idea of what I'm doing. I don't. I just try my best and try to do better every day.
Awesome! That is the right attitude! All I’m trying to do is help prevent you from making the same mistakes millions of other people do. Enjoy my life experience. 🤓

This man is the chaotic good Math Sorcerer 😭
I actually resonate with this. I would try to find quick videos for subjects but when I actually sat down with the textbook and did problems I felt like I was learning. Videos help but the steak and potatoes is in the textbook.
excellent

Thankfully, I got a job that demands reading and staying close to books so I am getting back to my first love I'd forgotten for a short period of time.
sounds like life brought you back to what you love, and that’s what matters most.

Watch my most recent video. You’re missing the point.

Yeah, this video is really meant for US born american engineer majors.

Somebody called me outdated because I suggest a book for someone to learn Python programming. He said why learn through books while we have Udemy video courses!!
This video is in relation to PLEM majors
@@authorjond Programming is similar to math and used heavily in engineering
Practice problems are the best way to learn for the reasons you describe, however, I really think on the front end, it does not matter how the material is initially learned. Watched Khan academy, cool; read a textbook, cool. Either way shows you how to do, but to learn, you have to be the one doing. I'm about to be a third year medical student and I rarely use textbooks, but I did when I was learning physics and organic chemistry. I mention this because it also depends heavily on the subjects one is learning. The ultimate point is that in order to learn, you must first do.
don't believe everything you think
I really like learning from videos! It's way better than reading textbooks! Well, at least in my experience.
The problem is, if you are a STEM major, your job is to do the appropriate research in order to be the one to explain the video. If you just watch someone else do it, it is no different than plagiarism. This is if you intend on doing research or innovation.

you not special! you not special! I feel this right now though. I got through ChemE without really needing to read my textbooks too much, and now as a professional I’m having to learn how to read.
that is about the gist of it
The Khan Academy app features problems, quizzes, and unit tests in addition to videos.
Little Miss Informative, dropping those details like a pro! Khan Academy is a fantastic tool for those who want to deepen their understanding through practice alongside learning. The real value, though, is how you use it-dedication and effort turn resources like that into real growth.
Stick around and subscribe to my channel for more tips and strategies to take your learning to the next level. Who knows? You might discover even better ways to achieve your goals.

I have been both a Textbook learner as well as video learner. I have also been to some of the Khan Academy videos.
The things that make me choose textbook these days are :
1. Self learning is Acquiring knowledge through thinking
2. You are not limited by your instructor's speed but rather your own reading speed. Increase it, learn more. You can finish a whole lot of topics via textbook.
3. Your ability to read improves.
4. You can revise much much faster.
Reasons why I am forced to watch lectures sometimes :

"Sometimes textbooks use too much of jargons to make an easy concept look too complicated"
- THIS!
So now I use more videos and less books to learn and I don't regret.
you missed the point of the message
I feel like I have encountered with you on Omegle lol
This video is super straightforward, thanks

When i was in 7th grade , my father brought me a math book , in the very first page it was written " Mathematics is the mother of all sciences "---- Gauss . In my opinion books can't be replaced by videos. Videos sometimes help but for better understanding, book reading , proof writing is must .
sounds like your father set you on a great path early, and gauss was definitely onto something. books give depth that videos can’t always match, especially when it comes to proofs and real understanding.

This is so true. The only times I gained mastery in anything was when I learnt from textbook and other forms of written resources from scratch. 😂
Grinding it hard with discipline and not taking short cuts are better for mastery. Nice video. 👍

I'm 48 and studying math for better insight into AI. For calculus I watched Professor Leonard's series which was good but I did limited problems. Now I am using a text to study linear algebra and working through an actual book. Either way I feel like I've acquired the requisite mastery as far as how these topics apply to neural networks, etc...
sounds like you’re on the right track-working through a book solidifies understanding in a way videos alone can’t.

Yes! Just want to help.

I don't read textbooks for my courses. I read teacher's slide and senior's notes. I feel like studying textbooks requires so much time and effort. Is it bad? 😭
it’s not bad, but textbooks provide depth and clarity that slides and notes might miss. try using both-read key sections of the textbook to strengthen areas you’re struggling with.

Listen to the full video I made it for you and I made it only about five minutes. The reason why using Kahn Academy & other similar resources correlates to plagiarism for stem majors

It’s wild that ppl who are offended by your style continue to watch.
At first, they don't want to hear the truth and they lash out because they don't want to acknowledge their own problems resulting in blaming others for their actions. Then, they think about it and come back and then instead of it being me that helped them, they can say they chose to receive the help making it so that they are responsible for hearing the message lol. It is like a control issue thing. I have a friend like that, he thinks that everything that ever happened to anyone is because he said something to them once... LMAO

You must be from the US. Check out my resources below, they will help prevent you from failing-that is, if you can acknowledge you are wrong. "I think, therefore I'm right."-You

These platforms are really good to get acquainted with subjects and especially complex ones before diving deep into the books so I would say they complet each other

Maybe Some people only want to use these skills in some other fields, they only want to study maths or physics for maybe just engineering or some other degree.
maybe, just maybe... do with life as you see fit and you will only fit into what you see

Thank you so much for the message, it really hit me. I'm gonna change my life
awesome!
100% correct. People nowadays don’t seem to understand that a book is the best way to learn. Videos are fine as a complementary material, but you cannot learn anything from there alone.
thanks!
I left grad school to pursue writing fiction in 2019. I am only doing the math side of this channel to document my extensive experiences as a student, tutor, and adult going back to college, getting a STEM job, getting into grad school, ... I have a unique life I wanted to share. I fell in love with fiction writing when I was studying for the GRE for my PhD while doing my masters. Interesting story I will divulge eventually.

every teachers who teaches has learnt from the books and yes textbooks are the ocean of knowledge but a good teacher always makes you understand the topics easier and in an engaging manner .

You're welcome, son. You are also grounded until you get those grades up!

Self Studying will always be superior form of learning. Because you are actively thinking.
Absolutely! Self-studying forces you to take charge of your learning, making you actively engage with the material rather than passively receiving it. It builds critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and independence, which are invaluable not just in academics but in life. Combine it with occasional guidance or feedback, and it becomes an unstoppable formula for success. Keep up the great work, and don’t forget to subscribe for more tips and motivation!

What's in "The Ultimate Crash Course"?
That is a textbook. Stewart Calculus Textbook

So many of my peers in my Physics major cheat and it really hurts the curve. While the rest of us that use the book and have actual skill in physics look like the ones lacking to the professors and others. Sad world.
It’s definitely frustrating when hard work and honesty feel undervalued because of others' actions. Remember, though, that genuine understanding and skill in physics will always pay off in the long run, whether it’s in research, grad school, or your career. Stay true to your values-your dedication will shine where it truly matters.

I mean why not use both
The point of the video has nothing to do with learning, it has to do with understanding and getting ready for a job.

I do watch some videos but mostly as a supplementary to my studies.Sometime I would come across very formal definition of certain concepts especially in discrete math, and If i am having a hard time understanding the definition I would search on youtube regarding that concept to have some professor on youtube explain it in plain English. I don't know if there's anything wrong with that right?
Btw great content as always professor
nothing wrong with that at all, using all the tools you can is how you win at learning. glad the content helps!
