Hi lovely August - I'm so excited to watch this but before I do just wanted to send you a big THANK YOU - I've never found a book tube channel where someone reads like I do before (I thrift all my books so I'm always super late to any hype parties and reading lots of backlisted things!) and you feel like such a kindred spirit!! This year my resolution is to get all of my books for free; in the UK we have this really cool initiative where people are repurposing disused red phone boxes as giant little free libraries (you would love them!). I have three within cycling distance and I'm so enjoying just picking up random, whatever-I-fancy books and reading in MY way!! Too many books get forgotten about in the rush of new releases and I love that your channel gives a platform for those books ❤

Thank you August for this. I love how avoid all the best sellers and go for books that bring joy.

Hi August, I am definitely putting Strega and The Perfect Place on my ever-expanding TBR. Some companion pieces to those books would be Hotel Silence (Audur Ava Olafsdottir),The Disaster Tourist (Yun Ko-eun) and Winter in Sokcho (Elisa Shua Dusapin). Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa has similar themes to Amatka. I love your channel and the "quirk factor" and the fact that most of the books you talk about are thrifted.

Your vlog for The Perfect Place got me so intringued to read that book. Perhaps one day I'll find it while I'm out thrifting!

Put Strega and Amatka on hold at my library. Have been in a slump this year, but these have been good Land of Milk and Honey (C Pam Zhang), To Be Taught, If Fortunate (Becky Chambers), and Eastbound (Maylis de Kerangal). ✨📚📷🥁🎵

📚✒️ Just recently found your channel and I love your videos! Such a treat to get recommendations off the beaten path. My favourite two books I read this month were Maud Martha by Gwendolyn Brooks and The Last Ranger by Peter Heller!

Looks like a great reading month!
Do you think you could make a video about your fave books with "the punching last line/sentence"? Of course, without sharing the line itself🤭
Also, I'd love a video on your fave translated books❤

It's been so long since my last read, but the kind of books you talk about always sound so much like the ones I gravitate towards that I might start reading again. I've been wanting to immerse myself again in experiencing sensations throughout literature, and I'll take this as a "hey, just start again!".
I really enjoy your content, it resonates with me a lot. I think you might enjoy 'La Amortajada' by María Luisa Bombal. It's a surreal and dreamlike story of the deceased protagonist, in wish she remembers her life as people come to see her body one by one. The poetic and synesthetic last moments of a woman that was never happy. Reading it was a unique and delicious experience, and maybe you will like it as much as I did. It has an english version written by the author herself, but she didn't liked it as much as the original one. Even though, I still think is worth a try.
Thank you for sharing pieces of your thoughts and the things you enjoy, it brings me joy seeing your videos. Winston is so cute and it makes the videos an even more enjoyable and cozy!
Hope you find even more great reads that brings you all those things you are looking for. Have a nice week!

From the introduction, I think you'd enjoy Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco!

I hope you’re doing well. It may be the unpopular opinion, but I feel like since your hiatus, life status change and channel rename, you’ve been very different. There’s a brightness in your past videos (literally even-you can almost see the “switch” just in the vid thumbnails in terms of vibe..they were just brighter, sunnier, your mood seemed cheerier) that no longer comes across under this new branding. You seem very subdued now, tired even.
I know you’ve spoken of doing way better _now,_ having moved, hanging out with friends more, having a real sofa, and everything being so much better _now_ but I too remember being in this boat after a significant life change and it being mostly false vibrato.
There seems a heavy cloud over you in these latest vids and, Idk, maybe the _past_ vids were false and _this_ is actually the real you, but I just hope you really are doing ok, that you know it’s ok to take time away and to feel sad or lost after such a major change and that you don’t have to “fake it til you make it” because it sometimes does more harm than good in the long run. I hope joy and happiness for you and Winston and that you find your bright spot again❤

Wow I so appreciate your analysis here! Actually, my past videos were the “less” authentic ones - though they were and always will be me 🤍
We’re allowed to express ourselves in different ways. To anyone feeling the same as this comment: What if it is ALL authentic? And we’re all just buoying through life without a constant? Because that is normal and okay! I actually am happier and more authentic than ever now - Fake happiness or showing happiness does NOT equate happiness 🤍
my true self is way more complicated than a 30 minute video could EVER show 🤍 and that goes for EVERYONE online
Thank you for being inquisitive so other people can take the time to explain their emotions, and how easy and also painful it is to fake happiness in real life and on social media
These new videos ARE the authentic me, without putting on the societally recommended “happy face”. I feel happiness and exuberant joy every day! And me not “showing” it in the old ways I did is okay 🤍 because I’m no longer performing
Thank you so much for your kind words. I’m actually in the best headspace than I ever have been 🥹🤍 and Winston is so happy to have a whole house to run around and play in!!!
