Air Rifle Hunting, Crown VS Crows

  • Just before the big Covid 19 lockdown in the UK and Northern Ireland really got going i was asked by a farmer who's land i have shot on for years to help out with a hooded crow problem as they had killed a lamb the day before. So we arranged a place i could park out of the way so i could shoot crows and he could work about the farm and still keep more than enough of a safe distance away from each other.

    I appreciate the real truth about your experience with a high end gun and ammunition accuracy. So many videos paint these and other guns as the best thing since sliced bread. We all know the hype the industry has about its products and how great they are. Yes some and even this one are of high quality but many of us have guns of much less cost that shoot the same at a given distance. My Nova Vista Liberty/Alpha is an amazing gun for the money and shoots just as good with many of the same features and didn’t even cost 300$. The heavier pellets do give you more energy down range but like you said, aren’t worth a damn if you can’t hit what your shooting at accurately. Very wise decision to shoot closer. Most of my pesting and hunting is done within 50 yards or so and even though the gun shoots one hole groups with a magazine of 10 at that distance...I still miss too. Hunting wildlife is a very dynamic situation and ever changing. Wind, game, temperature, the shooter, a regulator, the pellet, and anything in the moment that pellet leaves the barrel and the time it takes to get to the target. It’s a wonder we hit anything at all. Still, I think your a hell of a shot and I have mad respect for your honesty and transparency about shooting. I wish the videos could be longer truthfully. This lockdown crap has me about ready to pull my hair out, and to just think...they shut everything down here in the states till the end of April at least! WOW! Thank goodness we have TH-cam and airgun videos plus a small shooting range in the backyard, lots of lead and air. Thank you for this video and a brief getaway from this crazy situation we are all in. Take care, stay safe, and God bless you and your family.

      Thank you very much that was a great comment, the rifle has plenty of power just the pellets i was using loses accuracy at longer ranges and i don't like taking pot shots at them because even if i get a clean miss i only educate the crow which makes it even harder to deal with so i like certain shots and i have the patience to wait for them.
      Take care and stay safe.

      An air rifle wouldn't really be loud enough for that and if someone saw you shooting at them you'd have to do a lot of explaining even if you weren't trying to hit them, better just stepping out of the hide and shouting at them.

    The monsters need to be pushed at around 950 fps to be accurate. I would stick with either the jsb exact heavy 18 grains or HN Barracuda match/bisley magnums if wind is an issue(both around 21 grains). Pretty accurate out to 75 yards with anywhere from 850 to 920fps depending on the rifle. Easy on the air too.

    • @HuntersVermin
      @HuntersVermin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I was also advised to get a signed letter from the farmer stating he has given you permission to be no his land at this time and the damage done to the livestock.

    Good video David and nice little set up.
    Little .17 HMR will knock them down lovely at 130 yards; lazer accurate at that distance... bit of a 'bang' though.

    • @HuntersVermin
      @HuntersVermin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HuntersVermin Funny isn't it. In truth I probably use my FAC S510 more than any of my other guns. I think it's the fredome you have to shoot up into trees etc. without the same degree of worry about backstop.

    • @hd96cubes
      @hd96cubes 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's why I use my air rifles more than my rifle. I can shoot inside barns, take birds off trees and to be fair my 25 FX Crown is more accurate at 100 yards than my rimfire, as long as its not too windy. My Ruger is ammo fussy and I'm seriously thinking about a CZ 457 Varmint but I reckon my Crown will still be more accurate.

    • @MKChase-uj9vx
      @MKChase-uj9vx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hd96cubes Hi pal
      I'm a big fan of the CZ. I have a 455 Varmint (heavy barrel) in .22 rimfire and it is brilliant, and so far, not ammo fussy. CCI or Eley run well. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one. Well engineered and well priced.
      Nothing is as laser accurate as a good PCP, because nothing is quite as consistent energy wise. As you say, its the wind, (even a mild gust), that screws up a pellet; even a 30 grain 'slug' is lighter than your standard 40 grain .22 'bullet'.
      Once you get to 60 ftlb 30 grain slugs you need to give the same backstop considerations as you would .22 rim, (well, nearly), no shooting into the air etc.
      Like you, I use my .22 PCP (AirArms S510) more than anything else really; quiet and versatile.
      Lol... not much getting shot at the moment though... fookin virus 😷👍

    Enjoyed the video, I also shoot with a Crown in 25 plus my Impact in 22. I find I get better results with the JSB Exacts than the Hades. The Hades have a very thin skirt and are more susceptible to damage than the Kings. I shoot the Kings about 920fps in the 22 and 900fps in the 25. Both are deadly accurate out to 70 yards. I use a hold of 1mill on the 22 at 70 yards and the 25 is still on zero from 35-70 yards. It just takes practice with different pellets at different ranges to find your marks. I have taken crows at 100plus yards before but you really need a calm day to do that. I've just got some of the FX hybrids but I'm on lockdown so I don't know how they'll perform.

The hybrids I'm thinking will need to be travelling about the same speed, but we'll have to wait and see. Gr8 content. it's really good that u have a more than capable rifle and experience for the longer shots but your very honest about option not to take them I wish other channels had the same approach as your self they never really show how many misses it takes to get a good kill they must be edited and edited it's guys like yourself that make it all worth while. some channels just want to promote sponsored big names keep up the good work

    • @HuntersVermin
      @HuntersVermin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much glad you enjoyed it. I have nothing against promoting stuff after all that's how some channels get great stuff to show us but i'm there to control vermin and i can't afford not to miss by taking pot shots at crows just to see if i can hit them because even if i get a clean miss i only educate the birds which makes them even hard to deal with.

I was also advised to get a signed letter from the farmer stating he has given you permission to be no his land at this time and the damage done to the livestock.

    Good to see hoodies take a bash. The 500 barrel in the crown will not handle the monsters at range without a pellet B liner. Hybrids won't like the crowns low speed so best stick to the Hades or the 18.13 JSB which will shoot sub1" easily out to 70m and better still you can mix and match the 2 without re-zero. If you want to shoot heavys, or slugs its new barrel liner or better still hybrids and slugs with a 600mm barrel that will give you the velocity but again slug or pellet liner change may be needed too depending on what you want to feed it

    • @HuntersVermin
      @HuntersVermin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I've been told the 500mm barrel is going to hold me back with the slugs but i have the hades running at 964fps which seem to group well at 30 yards but i'll not get any longer range testing done till after the lockdowns lifted. Thanks for the info.

    • @happyhalfwit8862
      @happyhalfwit8862 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HuntersVermin would back the hades off to about 920 either with the power wheel or a retune. Frankly the 18.13 @920 are phenomenally accurate. Set up for the slugs then power wheel back to get this speeds and u have an all rounder

  • @muratmustafa4532
    @muratmustafa4532 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    People are commonly reporting a high-speed (950+ fps) is required to stabilise those 25 grainers at long range (50+ yards) and I did not see anyone able to get that speed from an FX Crown. If I had a FAC airgun and would not able to shoot 50+ yards due to accuracy issues, I would be crazy! I am doing an MOA group at 50 yards with sub 12fpe .177 Air Arms in an indoor range. Of course things would different when there is a wind.

    • @HuntersVermin
      @HuntersVermin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd have to change the 500mm to a 700mm barrel on my crown to get any higher speeds which would make it too long for hide shooting. It shoots the 18 grain JSB very well at 50+ yards but i was looking for more knock down power with the heavier 25grain pellets which worked but the accuracy sucks past 50 yards. I have got much better accuracy with the JSB hades and the FX slugs but due to the lockdown i have not yet tested them on live quarry.

  • @johnemerson2k10
    @johnemerson2k10 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'd personally change pellets. If they're doing that after 40 50 yards I'd not bother. I take them shots all day with a 12ftlb 177. Looks how far air hunters and airarmssa take shots. Although saying that decent video

    • @HuntersVermin

    Beautiful looking Crown, but you've shown why this rifle frustrates me! Beautiful stock, but simply just doesn't have the power of the Impact to allow use if slugs/hybrids, and thus you are limited to the 35-40 yd range with pellets for ethical kills. I'm no airgun designer, but there MUST be something stopping them from putting the same internals into this rifle😒. Sorry TX, not going to spend $2000 on a rifle that won't shoot slugs.

    Why dont you just use your .22lr in those open fields? Faffing about with a very exspensive airgun seems a waste of time. In those farm sheds ok but not outdoors. I really enjoyed your vid with the rim fire, they did not flop around when you hit them with that.

    • @HuntersVermin
      @HuntersVermin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You have a good point a decent CZ .22lr with sub's is cheaper and very effective i could even have used my .17 Hornet there but i enjoy using the air rifles as well and the challenge of decoying the birds that little bit closer for a clean shot, its a bit like some people like hunting with a catapult or a bow when they could quite easily use a shotgun or rifle.

  • @brotherhood_ofstreetracers4268

      Well if its the silencer your talking about the crown comes with a full length shroud which you can extend and acts as a silencer.

    Too much movement not enough camo especially the plastic camera thing on the side of your scope.

      Well the plastic camera case is actually well inside the hide so shouldn't need camouflaging.

    You need to stretch your range!

      I have shot rabbits and magpies out to 70 yards with various air rifles but the 25gr JSB monsters have plenty of power but aren't accurate enough in the crown for consistent kills out past 40-45 yards but i intend to try the JSB hades and slugs to see if i can get more consistent results at longer ranges.
