I (36F) needed black dress pants for a retail job a while back. I went to like 15 stores looking for a pair that was A) durable enough to last more than a few weeks, B) made of a fabric that wouldn't pick up dust or lint specks if you looked at it wrong, C) had pockets deep enough to hold a box cutter and a sharpie without them falling out when you crouch to pick things up (I took my box cutter with me while shopping to check), and D) didn't wrinkle easily.
I ended up having my retired military dad take me to the closest Navy exchange and buy me a pair of *their* women's dress slacks (I paid him back of course). I took those pants to a local dry cleaner to get them tailored to fit me and pockets added.
They didn't have any pockets at all by default, but it turns out tailors can generally add stuff like that to almost any pants that aren't skintight. For not as expensive as you'd think.
It cost me like $100 all in all (pants + tailoring and this was like 8 years ago so it'd probably be more now), but those pants fit me perfectly without needing a belt, looked great, had wonderful pockets, and lasted me several years even though I didn't go easy on them. Zero regrets.

Yup, can confirm. When a piece of women's clothing has _functional_ pockets it is genuinely one of the most happy/exciting finds on an entire outfit. For most of high school I straight refused to wear "women's" clothes because it just wasn't practical or cost effective; I could go to the men's section, get better quality clothes for a MUCH better price. For pants I just re-stitch the bottoms so they don't drag (and double perk was it is far less of a puzzle trying to find the right size!). Nearly all of my shirts to this day are from the men's section because they get the comfy thick cotton rather than the itchy thin (nearly see through) cotton and I'm spending at _least_ half as much for the same, if not better, shirt.

    1. Men's jeans fit my hips and waist way better than any women's jeans ever did, and I've got a bit of a curve to myself
    2. I could fit my hand well past my wrist into the front /and/ back pockets
Needless to say, I've bought those jeans. And multiple other pairs. They're my favorite jeans now.
If you're a woman thinking about trying on men's jeans just for the heck of it, do it. You might be a bit limited in terms of sihlouette, color and accessorization, but otherwise, men's jeans are just superior. Try them on, and marvel at just how comfortable jeans can be.

I would love an episode about inconsistent sizing, which mainly happens with bras but also jeans (and pretty much everything else, realistically). For women's clothing, it's almost a requirement to try the items on when buying jeans because you can have two of the same exact pairs of jeans (brand, style, everything) and they'll fit differently. This is likely due to the manufacturing process, but I _hate_ trying on clothing in-store. Why is creating consistent and universal sizing so difficult?

    • @InvaderZinga
      @InvaderZinga ปีที่แล้ว +40

What sucks is that men have better sizing. For example pants; women have numbers like 4 or 6 which is arbitrary whereas men get stuff like 34x42 or something, giving the waist size and the length of the leg. Why can't they do something for woman pants? But to your point yes, it's crazy that you can be a small in one brand's clothes but be a large in another brand.

Also, a possible style theory idea: Is it possible to make an outfit or clothing item that can easily tear away, like they do in spy movies and cartoons? Something to think about.

They only held your more useful tools [keys, watches, writing tablets like dance cards, for example, that you need to be out and ready so you don't have to dig into your pockets. Chatelaines as well shown a person in charge, the clinging of the sound of the chains basically told them "I am the matriarch of the household and you better focus on me."
I also would recommend you to if you're looking for facts in the Victorian era you can look for Bernadette banner, and the other fabulous dress historians around that court of TH-cam. she is quite the expert on the story of corsets, as she was a corset wearer ever since she was young to help combat her scoliosis issues.

Abby Cox has a couple of recent videos about purses and the pockets. Really great stuff if you're really geeky about history. I think she mentioned how the fall of pockets due to the rise in popularity of the purse could also be correlated to the rise of the modern cosmetics industry - i.e. preference to carry cosmetics in a purse vs pockets as you can change a bag much easier than you can rip out a pocket and sew a new one in should there be an accident with cosmetic pigments.

Which isn't fair when you like said T-Shirts as a woman. I noticed unless your a certain age demographic, you don't really get to choose much as far as Anime T-Shirts or something at Walmart for example and have to go into the mens to get them otherwise you get plain, flowery, cutesy and more basic design options unless you go to a store that does so purposely (like hoptopic or something) you can't find them at basic stores that carry clothes for women. It's especially worse if you have to have plus size clothing as well. If fact while it's important to be healthy still it's wrong that they shrink and carry less for those that need to wear plus sizes especially considering you need clothes to go out to walk or do any said exercises besides normal stuff in the first place unless you don't mind being a nudest, exposed to the elements or risked getting arrested for indecent exposer you don't get to chose what you like to wear when plus sizes especially as a woman.

Probably partly because of pockets, but the women on her side of the family definitely kept that fiery Scottish defiance through the generations even after coming to Canada long before. My mum's own mother lied about her age and said she was 16 when she was 15 so she could go to university in the 1940s. I was told she was set to help work on Canada's first computers when she met my grandfather and had to give that up to travel with him for his first year of work as a doctor up north treating the native communities there. My wife was excited that dress pockets came back over the last couple years. Sun dresses are my big love in women's fashion so I was right there with her in the excitement when she wore sun dresses with pockets. Viva la pocket revolution!

I swear when I started wearing "boys" clothes I was amazed about the size of the pockets (I could probably fit my whole life in there)

I think the oxymoron that infuriated me most as a teenager was "lipstick pocket." Anyone who wore female clothing in the 90's, could you fit a lipstick in that pocket? How about a house key, maybe? ... how about 25 cents? Yeah, exactly. I was so mad at being forced to pay more for this lipstick pocket that served absolutely no function but to hike up the price, (and also dig into my hip more on one side than the other on a packed train), that it's precisely when I started wearing clothes made for males. Never looked back.

Is that what those small inner pockets were suppose to be used for??! I never knew. Man those are dumb.

@RabidFanGirl Yehp, they are officially labeled "lipstick pocket." At least, they were in the 90s. My mother explained it to me because she was wearing jeans when the lipstick pocket was first introduced, (70s, I think), so what that little pocket was supposedly for was in the marketing for female jeans.

@@trinketsphinx3212 You learn something new everyday. I love that marketing companies put more emphasis on giving women lipstick pockets instead of practical pockets. Because that makes sense.

I grabbed my school laptop, just shoved it in my Jean pocket and walked into the next class. Meanwhile, there was a girl in that class that had a phone that was half in the pocket. It was hilarious, like this computer was fully submerged to my blue jeans

I love how purses are basically expensive versions of the strap on pocket that are even easier to steal and potentially even more valuable than whatever's inside. 👍

honestly this always bugged me and seemed so damn unfair that my girl friends all had these false pockets whilst wasting the effort to sew it in, it's nice to have a history lesson on why and more importantly why it's still happening and I'm glad that there's efforts and companies pushing to change that , equalizer being man purses but we got fanny packs and messenger bags already so it's uneven, give ladies their pockets back!!

(whenever pockets of any kind come up, my brother yells "Y'ALL HAVE PURSES - I wish I had a purse" and it leads to a HUGE argument, though, he never actually takes it up with a man who would object to it - namely his dad) (never minding the difference between a purse and a messenger bag, when we're actually talking about the latter - my apologies for ranting, but could your parents please adopt me so you can be my brother instead?)

Thanks for bringing this issue up. I’ll add that one of the worst things about pockets in women’s clothes right now is fake pockets! They’re everywhere! Where they have a seam where one should be, but it’s sewn shut with no actual pocket underneath. That’s just adding insult to injury!

I think one of the funniest parts of pants I have had actual pockets that came sewed shut. Two in the front two in the back, all big enough to hold my phone and wallet, just… sewn shut for no reason.
