I always thought the chevy II-nova from 62-65 (box novas) were the square bodies, (trucks are totally different story) 66 and 67 they were rounded a little then in 68 the classic nova shape came out and ran until the new body was released in 75.. I had several 71 and 72 Buick Skylarks that shared that body style. In 75 they came out with a narrower car with a much larger side window like hunters or my late grandmothers nova rs

Speaking of one horsepower, I live near a community that has a number of Amish people, and a man was taking his kids for a ride on a pony cart, and I commented to the man that that wasn't even one horsepower, to which the man just laughed.
I love the work ethic of the Amish, as you almost never see lazy Amish people. They're not afraid to get their hands dirty, and could run circles around a lot of us.
I had a buddy whose family bought a pair of new Novas in 1970. One had a 307, three on the tree, the other a 350, with the same tranny. The 307 would broil ONE tire forever, the 350 posi one was terrifying!!! A hard launch, and 2 good shifts would put you past 100 MPH easily! Building a Wont Go that will do that is like crazy,Man!

Worked on many turbo 350’s back in the day. Usually the biggest issue with them was the vacuum modulator went bad.
Hopefully Hunter this time got right length transmission bolts 🤣

Everyone mentions how Paul and Ben interact with the boys - wait 10 years and see the men they become. I grew up in such a similar environment. My dad and co-dad always treated me like an adult and gave me responsibility beyond my years- well it turns out I caught a horrible case of responsibility and hopefully passed that on. Now my dad treated me like an adult but that came with the consequences of yelling a lot at times. I figured out how to eliminate that- just like Paul

Gentlemen, I've never had a manual transmission fail in all my years of driving dozens of different cars.
Sounds like you're not driving them hard enough. I blew up many transmissions in my youth.

I agree perfect example look at rorys truck, and the and the use it see's. Also I use to work on a maintenance crew at a ups depot 98%of the trucks were manual and never had any problems with the trans seen quite a few driver twist drive shafts when the had a loaded truck but that was it .the 2% autos were garbage they ended up being taken off the lineup constantly.

AS a 27 year trans tech, you ALWAYS do a complete teardown, ALWAYS!!!
When having to pull down a valve body when it's still in the car, you always tie a rag around both wrists, it keeps the fluid from running down your arm and ruining your clothes. I've probably taken 2-3k valve bodys apart since 1996.
You don't need to torque valve body bolts, but I doubt they go over 10-15 ft lbs. I would use a gun also, just have to feel it. But if someone hammered it down, I have seen it lock up a valve before. Kinda hard with those older cast valve bodies.
Also you NEVER have to fill a torque converter, it's a total waste of time and serves no purpose. It's filled in a second of starting the engine.
Also you should never reuse a converter that came out of a trans that had a failure and had metal in the pan. Just throw it away. You'll NEVER get all the crap and metal out of it unless you cut it in half and clean it out(waste of time).
You will basically take a perfect rebuilt transmission and kill it within seconds by getting that metal and debris into the valve body. The transmission parts should be as clean as a surgical instrument that you would use in the hospital. Totally sterile.
Also, you don't need that expensive fluid. Just buy the cheapest synthetic they make, it's perfectly fine.
Also, what was the spring you left on the bench just as you guys were taking the tranny of the stand? Looked like a band piston spring. Did you change one out?

The reason there’s no drain plug in Tran tray is back in the day most folks did there own oil changes. It was common they mistakenly drained the tranny not the oil pan. Since the trans was suggested change only 80k vs every 5k for oil. And most trans were serviced at the dealer. Plus you had to remove the pan to remove the trans filter so there’s the reason.,.

I think a lot of the issues guys are having is over torque from the motors Merlin builds and the most of the transmissions are used and worn

Swapping a TH350 by yourself with only a floor jack is way more fun, with the car on jackstands. However watching Paul blow that one apart and put it back together is pretty dang impressive.

This is why manuals are life 💯 If you break a manual you must’ve made it a point to ignore maintenance and abuse the HELL out of it.

A built 383 perhaps? Nice stage 3 mid rpm cam on a 106 LCA. Like the vortec heads with larger valves, AFR or Dart. An LS would prob be a cheaper upgrade long term... but a sbc 355 can make 400hp but you know all that. A nice clamshell parts washer would really be a sweet addition to your shop! I use mine all the time! From engine blocks, transmissions & Tcases to jackstands & drain pans... totally steps up your cleaning ability!
Hunters seems like he feels pretty guilty about them having to help him, shows his good heart. If i had any advice for a person like that I would inform them that you are also giving them a gift letting them help someone they love.
My bet is, it had a 200 metric, and someome swapped it with a 350.
The amount of patience you have for transmissions is unreal. I owned my first vehicle I ever bought for 16 years (69 F250 that I cummins swapped) and I really really like that truck, It was even a bit sentimental to me but after two rounds of getting the trans rebuilt and only making it 100 miles I impulse sold it. Kudos to you for never giving up

Paul is going to Automatic school to learn how to imagine how many transmission jobs he'd get ,he could then build up a spares program ,spares for all the toys he has and others that use them .
Actually a good lesson with this video,I didn't know about the converter spacing and that gear drive .

I like the rims on hunters car but Id 86 the clunky plastic caps and replace them with inverted stainless steel cat food bowls and paint the rims red with a body color pin stripe. my 2000 ford van has 3 trans coolers, a recent fluid change after busting a line was 15qts @$12qt!!

As many transmissions and engines you R&R. You have a metal lathe so why don't you turn the heads off several bolts, rounding them very nicely to stab transmissions and engines to transmissions, transfer cases, doubler cases, etc.? As an old machinist I try now to work smart and not hard. haha
I stabbed many engines and trans by myself. I didn't have a lift other than a 20 ton cherry picker with two 15 ton air jacks that had a hose for a remote control to lift the engine or engine transmission combination. It also had two 12v gear driven motors to move it while I was under the rides guiding the work.
I raised the rear of the vehicle as high as I could get them so the front was nose down. Set up the engine and trans so they are at a steep angle. Then lower them into the bodies, until the back of the trans contacts a padded floor jack. As they are lowers and moved rearward I would jack the trans upward until they were aligned with the body. Wala, motor mounts and stab the cross member.
There's your dinner!
Try using some 'stabbing bolts'. You may like them.

For those you who may have wondered, we have so little water in Utah that we just call creeks “rivers.” Also, you might say, “just build a bridge Paul” but we’re also used to the “rivers” having no water in them. 😊

You need to take all transmission work to a "REAL" transmission shop. Paul's shown experience on transmission repair is a big fat "0". That Hunter would even let Paul touch his car shows his stupidity. Let's get real if Paul wants a good transmission he goes out to someone else.
Paul said he does engines and not transmissions. RIGHT, THAT'S THE REASON HE TOOK HIS ENGINE TO MERLIN FOR REBUILD.
PAUL give up on auto repair and go into construction where you can just pound nails into a 2 X 4.
