    Actually ties did once serve a purpose. They prevented your shirt from hooking onto what you bumped into. Buttons are a very recent innovation. Before buttons we had hooks and loops. The purpose of the tie was to cover the shirt's hooks so you didn't hook onto something else that came across your chest or stomach. This is why originally the tie was longer than it is worn today and tucked into your pants since this anchored it on both ends of your column of hooks and loops. With the invention of buttons, you might think then the tie should have then died off. But by then, the tie had already gained a second purpose. That second purpose was to provide color to the male business attire. This second purpose is why the tie is still with us today ... though usually shorter in length since few men still tuck it into their pants. For you see the average business suit is very dull color-wise. Commonly black, gray, navy blue (with or without pinstripes), and dark blue. Even semi-socially-acceptable summer suit colors are also very dull with brown, paige, and even white. The tie spruces up the business suit. Gives it color. Lets the businessman express their individuality. Speaks of how lively (or not) they are.
    And while we're on the topic, until relatively recently, the tie was almost always helped with a handkerchief in one's jacket breast pocket. The handkerchief being of the same color as the tie. However, facial tissue paper has made the handkerchief a socially disgusting accessory today. So now the handkerchief in one's jacket breast pocket is also only for decoration and commonly a very small handkerchief and even made to only peek out of the breast pocket just a little bit. Some men still wear handkerchiefs in their jacket breast pockets (Fox News' Special Report's anchor Bret Baier [c510383.r83.cf2.rackcdn.com/photos/PhotoDB_Repository/2009/2/custom/Bret%20Baier%202009.jp-258x318.jpg] always wears one [note how the color of his tie and handkerchief is the same]), but the practice is falling out of fashion leaving the tie as the only color most businessmen now sport.

      Buttons are not at all recent invention ! Buttons came in much before Tie.

    • @faramund9865
      @faramund9865 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no way this is true. Ties have been actually shorter in the past. And has only become longer in recent history, 20th century.
      Also the shirt with buttons all the way down is a 20th century or late 19th century thing too. Buttons would usually be only at the top third of the shirt. And thus a shirt would be pulled over the head.

    Ties are here to stay because it's one of the few ways that professional men can express themselves. Women get to wear anything they damn well please (within the fairly loose social restrictions), while all men are stuck in the same boring uniform. Sure, a suit looks sharp, but the tie is where the personality comes through.

    A significant portion of " fashion" is merely decoration, a finishing touch to pull everything together and, often, to "make a statement," in the case of a tie, whether it be one of "seriousness," "respectability," "business," "officiousness," "formality," etc.

    I always felt like the success of the tie is based somewhat on the fact that it makes a man look somewhat harmless. Kind of like if you walk around with a noose around your neck in a group of people. You'd not look very intimidating and would look like you'd be easily subdued. The tie could be used very easily to strangle the wearer. It's very odd really.

    You say they're "not warm like a scarf", try some wool ties. That's half the reason I wear them, because they keep my neck warm. I live in AZ, it's rarely cold enough for a scarf, and scarves are just... meh. Also, ties are typically worn with a button-down shirt, it hides the buttons, giving a more tailored appearance. Also, when you sit, sometimes your shirt may get a bit tight, and pillow out between the buttons. Ties hide this.
    What I can't stand, is when people wear a tie, with no clip. Or tie pin. Just let it flop in the breeze, dangle in your work, and generally be something to fuss with.

    The primary reason for wearing a tie is as part of a uniform. The types of clothes worn by men who are engaged in serious business and government affairs are as much a uniform as any attire worn by the military or police. The tie has been a necessary component of that "business" uniform for a long time and change is not likely to happen anytime soon.

    • @michaelpritchard2350
      @michaelpritchard2350 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's an interesting opinion given the fact that the dress codes of Google, Apple, or any major social media company indicate the opposite. Particularly if "revenue" factors into ones definition of "serious business".

    • @wsc31
      @wsc31 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike P The businesses you cite are hardly traditional and indeed have relied for their success on creating new products, new markets and new customers. As the innovators in the segment they have the ability to be innovative in many aspects of the business which includes creating their own "uniform" code. Uniforms are valued as a shorthand way to identify people, their professions and their status. The jacket & tie paradigm is no less a uniform than that worn by the military or police. An entry level executive and CEO both wear the suit & tie but are easily distinguished because one wears clothes off the rack and the other wears bespoke attire. A uniform is simply an outward display of identity and though the particulars may vary it remains a uniform because it conforms to a dress code.

    Well, it dies hide the buttons on your shirt. And if ye're a corpulent individual, the ties somewhat hides the belly.
    Personally, I eish gor the tie to fade away and for the toga to cone back in vogue.

    I think it's unfortunate that a person feels like he must wear a tie for special occasions and to not wear one might be viewed as disrespectful... Who gets to make these rules anyhow?
    Jehovah's Witnesses still wear neckties while attending their online zoom meetings (during the covid fiasco). They view as disrespectful not to. I wonder if Moses will be given a tie to wear when he's resurrected and if he'll have facial hair.

    He sort of looks like Better Call Saul. I think a good looking tie and a good looking suit look amazing. This set up he's wearing just makes him look like a fat used car dealer. There are much better fitting suits than that for his build. And better colors too.
