  • 📜 History of Saladin & the 3rd Crusade: The Next King of Jerusalem
    King Baldwin IV is in a bit of a pickle. He's dying of leprosy, but unfortunately, there are very few options for a suitable successor. There are Sibylla, his sister, and his nephew, Baldwin V. There's Guy de Lusignan, the first cousin to the King Henry II of England and married to Sibylla. And then there's Raynald of Chatillon, a noble pirate (of sorts). And all of them are vying to be the next king of Jerusalem. You know, while it's under siege in the middle of a crusade.

      Something that always interested me is that Game of Thrones is actually incredibly simple by necessity of story compared to the periods of history it's trying to emulate.
      In reality if GoT was in the high medieval period each great lord would have 20 cousins and uncles and nephews each trying to gain advantage over the other, and the fealty relationships of the great lords and the other lords wouldn't be anywhere near as neat. The lords of each place wouldn't even live in that place, nor would they ever be sure how many other nobles and men they could count on the support of. It's all just politicking around the capital.

Well the king died and his son acquired the kingdom of Castille and the peninsula fractured in small competing kingdoms.

      In my newest run, i played as navarra and my son became heir of france and navarra. After the king died, a decade long regency happened. 9 months before coming of age, the son got stabbed by his sister. This sister then kills her other sister's son (because this son inherited the kingdom of navarra). this son's mother then inherited the throne of navarra after her son and the murderous sister inherited France. The murderous sister then got deposed and the other son of the queen of navarra became the ruler of france. This neatly ends with the death of the queen of navarra and the unification of navarra and france.

    My understanding is that Leopold V of Austria also had been personally insulted by Richard, and that also played a big role in the capture and ransom. Apparently, after the successful siege at Acre, the leaders of the various armies put up their personal banners indicating that they had won- and Richard tore down Leopold's since Leopold was just a duke and not a proper king like Richard, Philip, and Guy. Leopold was so angry that he immediately quit the crusade and was back in Austria before the year ended.

The deal she made to secure her throne was that she would annul her marriage to Guy on the condition that she had full control over who she married next once she became queen. THEN she remarried Guy. She didn’t go back on any promises and showed herself to be quite politically savvy. I respectfully demand this be handled in the Lies episode!

    The rest play as Crusader Kings each vying for the throne of Jerusalem and getting extra points for various things like leading successful battles, holding other crusader states, and dying the least often (players come back as the heirs to their throne)

Just having people actively working against the crown within the court caused enough problems to cause the state to fail after a long enough period of time. The Turks would see this as well during the Ottoman Empire.

    • @htoodoh5770
      @htoodoh5770 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Well, cousin marriage wasn't incest but were prohibited. During the 11th and 12th century, close cousin was prohibited so rulers have to marry distant relatives. However, this was only ecclesiastically law and dispensation by the pope was allow.

    • @joellaz9836
      @joellaz9836 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Cousin marriage was also prohibited in the Middle Ages. In order for a noble to marry his cousin, he would have to seek permission from the pope himself.

    • @rosiehawtrey
      @rosiehawtrey 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not incest it's the usual biblical bollocks. There's a verse that says if you marry your brothers ex, the marriage is cursed and childless (which could make a kind of sense because if one bro infertile the other is more likely to be firing blanks - among other reasons for infertility - one including unusual blood proteins if I remember).
