All-new Mercedes-AMG SL43 Review - World's most expensive 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo?

- The Mercedes-Benz SL is an iconic nameplate. It's been with gracing roads around the world since the Gullwing 300 SL, examples of which now cost more than Australia. Sure, over the years, there have always been hardcore versions of the SL, and we fondly remember the SL55 and SL63 AMGs. There was even the highly memorable SL Black Series.
But for this new 2023 generation of SL, there will be no softcore SL500 version, at least as far as we know. And this "entry level" SL43 AMG now features a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder mild-hybrid electric/gas turbo drivetrain, which has certainly raised some eyebrows.
There will be V8 versions of the SL coming soon to our market, but right now, in South Africa, the SL43 AMG is the only variant officially on sale.
Our video journalist, Ciro De Siena, decided to take this stunning new roadster to his hometown of Sea Point, Cape Town, which features slow traffic and palm tree-lined, beachside boulevards. The perfect place to test an SL of old.
But how would this generation SL43 AMG fare? Well, it certainly drew a lot of attention; it is a real show stopper.
However, perhaps less importantly for some...how does it drive? Only one way to find out.

Single-handedly the most fun review produced in SA - hands down!! Singing Ciro all day err day!! (would not spend my R2.5M on an SL43 - no freakin' way - waste of money as this car doesnt know what it is or what it should be)

Porsche 911 Cabriolet sends its regards 😂 if you must have a convertible the BMW Z4 M40i can be had at almost half the price, fully specced and with the glorious B58.
You must be a die hard mercedes fan or really love the look of the SL43 to choose it over one of the many amazing options available 😂

Exactly what I've been saying and I echo those sentiments from 15:30. There's a thin veneer of Mercedes on new Mercedes at astronomical prices. It'll hurt the brand more in the long run. While they may make better profits now because of cost cutting, it's very evident in the poor quality of the products they're putting out. I used to be so in love with this brand. And I have such great memories of all the Mercs my friend's parents had from the early 2000s all the way through to the early 2010s. From the W211 E55 and W220 and 221 S500 to the W212 E63 and V6 normal C classes from those times. I remember what those felt like and drove like. They felt so special and so solid and something engineered by the best engineers in the industry. The price could be justified. Now it can't. The new Mercs don't feel like they are engineered machines but rather just feel like an ordinary product produced by an ordinary company prioritizing cost cutting over everything else.

The problem with Mercedes is making everything optional... I tried to spec C43 on the configurator it went to R1.9M easily. Audi is forgiving

R2,8mil will buy you W113, R107, R129 and R230 shape SL’s in one go and some change. 4 true Mercedes tanks that will appreciate in value vs. a plastic Gucci flavoured Mercedes-light.
MBSA are pricing themselves out of the market. R2,5m for a 4 cylinder? Same sentiments for the upcoming C63S!

Im so happy someone else is finally calling out Mercedes (and other brands) on their declining interior build quality. Recent Merc products have terribly put together interiors, creaky, squeeky, and rattly. This car is stunning, given, but seems like shocking value for money.
Me too! Because for far too long in the recent years Mercedes has been getting away with shoddy quality at inflated prices. It's to the point where, as a Mercedes owner for the last 10 years, currently driving a 2014 E350, I will not buy a new one. I test drove several. The new C. The new E. The new GLE and GLC. All absolutely shockingly bad build quality. My dad has a 2005 C220 cdi with 340,000kms on and the interior looks and feels new with barely a rattle and absolutely no squeaks. When my E went in for a repair at Mercedes, they loaned me a GLB. The first thing my dad said when getting in it was how plasticky and cheap it felt. He was even more shocked when I told him the price of it. My friends purchased a Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max and honestly the Chery is a better car than the GLB at half the price. It has better interior build and material quality and feels like a more solid vehicle. I'm very disappointed in this brand and they've lost my loyalty and respect.
Rather buy a M4 convertible and run circles around this 2.0 litre banana.
On the topic of fuel economy: still not convinced that downsized high performance engines are more fuel efficient compared to big engines. I mean 18L/100km is Jeep 5.7 Hemi or SRT territory

Making a solid, good, luxury car these days is surely no longer cost effective. I can't imagine that it is. Fluctuating currencies and skyrocketing prices in steel and other solid commodities are a major problem in this space and will only get worse. There is not enough supply and a massive demand for such commodities and using them on cars is becoming increasingly unsustainable.

Own a 2022 220 GLB, and I agree! the interior is not up to the "old Merc standard". My previous 220 GLC was way better. I would rather take the Porsche in your comparison Ciro. Great job Ciro, love your reviews.
I was at Mercedes Benz to enquire about the SL55, interestingly SL43's are not selling well at all. People want the bigger engines, for now they don't know if they will be getting the SL55 or SL63.
That is because they are garbage. I will get a 911 992 or 991.2 generation over this nonsense.
Mercedes doesn't listen to their customers. Who wants 4 cylinder cars in these segments. No one.

This review is extremely truthful in its honesty: Merc cars today are not great quality, check the interiors and build quality of some new C classes and GLC, for example.
2.5 million.. Forgive me I'd rather the Lexus LC 500
for that kind of money, i would get the Lexus LC500, its better looking, and sounds better because of the V8 and the materials used inside are nicer

This thing is not even fast. It will do 0 to 100 in 4.9 sec. That is slower than the A45s or rs3.
With Lexus updating their LC500, SL43 doesn't seem worth it. Especially since the Lexus will come everything standard for the same price of R2.5 million.
SL did really become rather a disappointing revival.

Pads have defs been glazed on this car previous drivers had their way with it shame man and here i thought mercedes stock brakes dont squeak i buy cheapos that dont even squeak after some franschhoek pass driving..this is a cool car i like how they had to make a segment for this car because you can get a C43 AMG cabrio thats pretty nice. I like all this added clips really helps support your statements.

Those Golden brake calipers last I checked represent Carbon Ceramics, which are noisy if you don't get them up to temperature. To shut them up you gotta go for a hard run and do an emergency stop.
Those are yellow, not gold. Steels meaning their quality is just bad

This car is quite frankly, utter crap considering the price. A VW R has the exact same engine size, will beat it in a drag, and costs less than half the price. And the SL's interior looks identical to the C-class which is again half the price.
And as Ciro said, it's way too firm and uncomfortable to be a dailyable cruiser, which was always the point of the SL. How is the new SL any different to the AMG GT? It's got the discomfort of a track-focused sportscar without any of the performance to make up for it.
It's clear Mercedes' cost-cutting has gone way too far. There's barely any difference between the interior of an A-class and an S-class, the GT and SL are pretty much the same car, and they can't afford to manufacture real buttons and physical controls. Step inside any new Merc model and it feels so much cheaper than the previous gen model. Really disappointed with Mercedes nowadays.

Let me start off by saying that I'm a die hard Mercedes fan. Always have been. I currently own a 2011 W164 ML350, unicorn of a car with only 75k km on the clock. Apart from it being in showroom condition still, and even though it was built by a bunch of Hillbillies in the USA, it still has something of that bank vault build quality of old. Everything on it just feels invincible. Like it would last forever. The bodywork, the metal itself, just feels like it must be twice as thick as most other cars. It does not dent easily. Same with the paint. I have one stone chip on it. You very accurately described newer Mercedes as cheap with a thin veneer of Mercedes over it. Nail on the head. Very sad. I honestly don't know what I will replace my ML with, as the newer Mercedes just isn't "The Best or Nothing".
I'm not that irked about the price, I'm more concerned about the amount of power they're extracting from a mere 2.0l I4 zylinder😢 on the c43 it's at 310kW. A highly strung boosted engine, let's see how it fares in 8 years from now.

For the Tenderpreneur who had a successful year shipping all that coal to Richards Bay, or built that R15M sportsfield at a "cost-cutting" Price...what's a few 100k of options here and there..
Sorry but I can't justify that price for a 4 cylinder Mercedes AMG SL. There's far better value elsewhere in the market from other manufacturers. The BMW M8 Competition Convertible or the Porsche 911 GTS is a superb open top Sports Car. The New SL is just too expensive .

40k extra for headsup display. Suzuki offers it as standard for free.....those optional extras are a rip off.
The price of this cruiser shows that this obviously a pleasure buy, as in you buy this just for the pleasure of it.

From what we know... all the round the world. The c63 has not been received well by the majority of people. So there's almost a halt in production. So we have to see what happens right now😊
People are a lot of things, but they are not stupid.
This was never going to end well for them with what they did to that car.
It’s worse in every imaginable way.
They dropped the entire ball with that car and BMW seized the opportunity to keep making the M3 better than ever (controversial front-end aside).
I believe they are diverting production to the C43 instead since the car is almost the same minus the different hybrid parts. The 2.0L 63 is already considered a flop so they are changing their forecasts for sales most likely.
the v8 is coming in the face lift year end 2025, so I don't see that hot mess of a 2.0L c63 coming to S.A, I mean who is going to buy a R3mil 2.0L
@shasha023 from what I've heard on the news. Mercedes is NOT bringing back the V8 for the c63... this is from Mercedes from what I can remember. It's very unfortunate. They believe that the 2.0L is the future and the replacement for the v8.
