This would be even better if you included foods that are unique to Okinawa. Yakiniku, gyoza, ramen and soba are all mainland Japanese foods. Okinawa soba, goya champulu others would give people a better idea of how unique Okinawa is!
I was on Okinawa 1975-1978. There were distinct boundaries. They were easily identified by English or Japanese neon signs. Americans did not go to Naha. They stayed in Koza. I made several Japanese friends, many of who had moved to Okinawa from Tokyo for a slower paced life. The Japanese are very mindful of others. For example, even with bumper to bumper traffic, you will never ever hear a horn honk. I moved there from Oakland CA to follow a lady I had met back to her home island, the girl I should have married but then we all make mistakes, don't we?
It did not look anything like that when I was there dirt streets no nothing but beautiful people when I left Okinawa in 1962 I took one of them with Me but only in My heart and there is where She has been all this time.
Go to Okinawa the 1st two weeks in October. You will be there for the Giant Rope Festival. A giant Rope weighing about 80 tons. There is a parade down Kokusai Dori (International Drive) to Rt. 58 where the Rope is laid out for everyone to grab hold of a line and wait for the signal to begin. Awesome time.

Not at all. The flight is less than 3 hours - I have one booked right now.
