I am from Okinawa.🏝 Thank you for introducing Okinawan food in this video.☺️ All the foods you introduced have been familiar with since we were young. I hope more people from all over the world will come to my hometown. Sorry if my English is strange.😅
I was born in Naha and I am half Okinawan and Italian. I watch your videos almost every day. I love Tabieats❣❣❣ I've been stateside for almost 50 years. I've been back to Okinawa once in 1990 and I'm hoping to go back in November this year. My mama will be 88 years old and I want to celebrate her birthday with her.💜 I'm so anxious to try King Taco and drink Orion beer. Thank you for featuring Okinawa on several videos. I've watched a dozen times already. 💜
While I LOVE Okinawan food. Think I'd rather eat the Italian squid ink staples rather than the Okinawan...let's just say it didn't agree with me when i first tried it.
@@boomdos4265 not really sure of squid ink. I don't remember if I enjoyed it as a child. I know I'm not a fan of sashimi. Never was . Although my family loves it.
Udon and soups from *Okinawa are good for health.* The light soups are good for digestion and intestinal health. This is one of the reasons that the people in Okinawa live a very long life. We can be very glad to live by their example.
Thank you for making these Okinawan videos. My grandmother came from Okinawa and I remember eating many of these foods with her. There is something I didn't see that she made quite often, and that's fall apart pork ribs. She had a technique to boil with soy sauce and a type of vinegar, that would just melt the meat down to the point you don't have to chew. Lol It sounds pretty good doesn't it. I wonder if Okinawa does that too? The red bean buns are my favourite aswell. Edit: Nice videos👍
I love all okinawan food I guess l'm lucky my wife is from Okinawa so I get all different kinds of okinawan food plus we go back to Okinawa every year and planning on retiring there
When I was stationed in okinawa I used to always go to Gen House right outside of the marines base foster for the okinawa soba. By far my favorite Japanese noodle soup. The taco rice was the life saver for my shop because it comes on a food truck on base when we do not have time to go to breakfast.
Thanks for the overview of Okinawan cuisine! I really want to try umi budo, sata andagi, Blue Seal ice cream, chinsuko, dragon fruit, and the peanut tofu. So many things to try! I really love this series.
Oh my goodness! YUM! I just found an Okinawan restaurant in Tustin-about 45 minutes from where I live. Brother! They have umibudo!! Thank you for sharing this with us! Because of you boys, Okinawa is now definitely on our travel bucket list! ❤️
Habuya? I was just about to tell you to go to this spot called "Shin Okinawa" in Torrance. But it's closed. Honestly it was the only Okinawa place i knew of, and the food wasn't all that great.
Thanks TabiEats for the list! 1. Goya champuru (stir-fried bitter gourd with pork) 2. Okinawan soba 3. Umi budo (sea grapes) 4. Jimami tofu (made from peanuts & potato starch) 5. Rafute (fatty pork cooked with Okinawan black sugar & Awamori alcohol?) 6. Sata Andagi (Okinawan donut) 7. Taco rice (esp. at King Taco) 8. Tropical fruits 9. Blue Seal Ice-cream 10. Chinsuko (most popular Okinawan souvenir to bring home. Lard used instead of butter)
You missed the most important thing. And Shoko already said it. Awamori. Awamori w/ Shikuwasa juice...or even better something i've copied after living in Okinawa...Koregusu...I put it on everything i eat if i get the chance to grab a bottle of Awamori.
Goya is called ampalaya here in the Philippines. I used to hate it too but now I always crave for its bitter taste. Umibudo/sea grapes are also common here but I don't eat it whenever my grandma buy it.
I grew up eating goya champuru and sata andagi in the Philippines though we had different names for them. I thought they were just common filipino foods, but turns out they're common in Okinawa too!
Same here.Grew up on that stuff...and sure enough I'm in Okinawa eating the same thing hahaha. Okinawans also have a form of "Longonissa" forgot what they called it, but I remember seeing it. I read it came to Okinawa by way of Hawaii, which in turn got it's influence from the Portuguese. BTW best Longnissa is the Portuguese "Linguica", had it in Porto. If you're ever in Porto. Look for the Linguica.
okinawans love bittermelon. absolutely loooove it to the point of obsession. bittermelon candy, bittermelon snacks, bittermelon drinks. they exude bittermelon.
Yum!!! :D I hope you guys do more Street Food videos as well!! Also, I love sea grapes xD Growing up in the Philippines, I used to eat a bowlful of these!! Since moving to Australia, been caving for it and hoping to visit my hometown next Feb xD Just a quick question, are there a lot of Filipinos in Okinawa like in Hawaii? Because ube (purple yam) is a favourite Filipino flavour- we love it as an ice cream, a cake or even as a snack itself- grating some boiled fresh ube and mixing it with condensed milk :D You can use freshly-made ube as a snack or condiment (kinda like azuki) especially in halo-halo or to make ube ice cream/cake!!! Please try!
There is also a Blue Seal ice cream at Ebisu Garden place for those in Tokyo who can't make it to Okinawa. Although I must say somehow it tastes better in Okinawa. :-)
I was stationed at Camp Foster in 84-85. Wish I would have had a more open mind in my youth. I did not get the nerve to try Okinawan food until I was almost ready to go back to the US. Wish I could go back and try all the things I missed.
I just started watching again after a recent illness, can you talk about some of the broths that the dishes you share are made in? I had to have slot of broth when I was sick.
Orion is the best beer made in Japan I've tried so far. Kirin is the second best. Sapporo has a big, malty bottom end that is probably popular, but I personally don't like. Asahi tastes similar to Budweiser. Not bad, but not much flavor to speak of.
Okinawan style okonomiyaki will blow you away. If you're a fan of the dish and you're on the islands, do not pass it up! Oh! Where's that cutie Satoshi today?
Wished I'd seen this 15 years ago. Spent 2 years living on Okinawa and only tried the taco rice and ice cream from your list. Can't believe you left out their versions of yakitori and yakisoba. Also you mentioned the fruit but left out pineapple, which they produce a lot of.
I have to try umibudo some time if I get the chance. It looks so delicious.. EDIT: Saw a store were you can order some her in Sweden. Let's see how fresh it seems.
Saburo you are very funny.a sin not to eat a ko-cookie 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆. I seem to grasp a few words in your language ko means hirl and kun a boy. Am i right ? So for now i can guess a girl cookie a sin not to eat .hahaha 😆😆😆😆😆
Well it is the most informative Okinawan food video I’ve seen so far, BUT! I have a problem with you calling yourself a foodie and then in the same sentence say you don’t like bitter melon? That’s a sin. You better learn to love bitter melon or I’m gonna wonder if you’re just a pretend foodie vLogger!!!!!!!!!
I have to say I am so glad that we are Uchinanchu. Okinawa today has many things to offer however we need to read their history how the people have suffered, the overthrow from the Japanese and their plight today from the military bases & crime against the people from US military personnel & their accidents that have hurt a school etc......
Should try these foods for the next time in Okinawa!

Okinawan dishes are my favourite Japanese dishes. Especially rafute!
I’m from Okinawa and I also highly recommend trying out zenzai! It’s a sweet red bean soup dish with mochi and sometimes barley
Okinawan food is my favourite Japanese food.
My soul is still in Okinawa MCAS Futenma. The people are so humble and kind. The food is amazing and out of this world.
I live in Oki right now and I love all these tips. Especially the blue seal salt cookie ice cream.
Dre Schell salt cookie ice cream is incredible and I miss it

Okinawa Soba is the best. I’m glad I can find fresh soba here.

Edit: Nice videos👍
I am living in Okinawa and have tried 8/10!! Fave of all Okinawa Soba and Blue seal Ice Cream
The food is my favourite thing about Japan! Definitely will have to check out Okinawa!
I love all okinawan food I guess l'm lucky my wife is from Okinawa so I get all different kinds of okinawan food plus we go back to Okinawa every year and planning on retiring there

My personal Favorite is OOmani Soba I used to eat it in a Basement Restaurant in Naha.
It all looks great between food and karate i think i would enjoy a stay in Okinawa someday

Great tip, thanks for sharing, must visit someday!
We aren't Okinawan but mom just made rafute yesterday because we love it so much. Everything looks super yummy!! Thanks for sharing!
I’ll need to make mango salsa when I’m there. Thanks for letting us know about the fruit variety there!
Oh my goodness. I must go visit Okinawa ASAP. delishioso !!
This place sounds a lot like Hawaii and I am so intrigued by the sea grapes since you can't really get it in the states.
I can’t believe sweet bean cakes are not on this list. On a cold Okinawa morning, a hot, sweet bean cake is amazing.
Sata andagi are like the Palauan version of Tama so good!
I have the SATA ANDAGI recipe. I will absolutely be making this recipe.
Thanks TabiEats for the list!
1. Goya champuru (stir-fried bitter gourd with pork)
2. Okinawan soba
3. Umi budo (sea grapes)
4. Jimami tofu (made from peanuts & potato starch)
5. Rafute (fatty pork cooked with Okinawan black sugar & Awamori alcohol?)
6. Sata Andagi (Okinawan donut)
7. Taco rice (esp. at King Taco)
8. Tropical fruits
9. Blue Seal Ice-cream
10. Chinsuko (most popular Okinawan souvenir to bring home. Lard used instead of butter)
Mimiga (pig's ears) was also very delicious in Okinawa. Goya Chanpuru, rafute, mimiga and Orion beer makes me miss Naha.
Rice is magic. We love chili on rice, great on a gloomy cold day. I might make the taco rice and see if hubby will like it, it looks so yummy!
Looks so delicious. Although I would still be hesitant to eat goya.
Hey guy! Here are my personal top ten favorite foods in Okinawa. Did I miss anything? Let me know what some of your favorites are.
TabiEats Love shikuwasa juice, spam musubi
Awamori sake, especially "kusu" (aged sake).
You missed the most important thing. And Shoko already said it. Awamori. Awamori w/ Shikuwasa juice...or even better something i've copied after living in Okinawa...Koregusu...I put it on everything i eat if i get the chance to grab a bottle of Awamori.
I'm going to make some taco rice. I forgot how good that was until you showed it. I remember the tomato being diced though.
Goya is called ampalaya here in the Philippines. I used to hate it too but now I always crave for its bitter taste. Umibudo/sea grapes are also common here but I don't eat it whenever my grandma buy it.
Salted Okinawan blue seal icecream 🍦 is very very oishi!
Looking forward to trying all 10! Okinawa is coming up next:)
That tofu looks amazing! Now I'm curious how well it would work in tofu puddings. (And the sata andagi look adorable!)
It all looks positively delicious! Thanks for the great video. :-)
This list is awesome... love that umebudo. Thanks for sharing!
+SoloTravelBlog glad you enjoy d this. Love your channel!
I love Okinawa 💕 I consider it my home away from home.

Goya! Love it!!!!
okinawans love bittermelon. absolutely loooove it to the point of obsession. bittermelon candy, bittermelon snacks, bittermelon drinks. they exude bittermelon.
Ana Carolina they love pork more
Hi...
Whatttt??? Bittermelon candy???
Not all okinawans love Goya
It’s why they live forever. I’m force fed Goya and ginger every time I’m at my obas house
Okinawa minha raizes .Culinaria delicioso!!!
OMG, I love Kings tacos and blue seal. I wanna go back to Okinawa
Goya chanpuru .."chanpuru"インドネシア語にある言葉と似ている意味はmixingです。
Agu is so good but it's kind of rare now so I really don't mess with them anymore.
Yum!!! :D I hope you guys do more Street Food videos as well!! Also, I love sea grapes xD Growing up in the Philippines, I used to eat a bowlful of these!! Since moving to Australia, been caving for it and hoping to visit my hometown next Feb xD
Just a quick question, are there a lot of Filipinos in Okinawa like in Hawaii? Because ube (purple yam) is a favourite Filipino flavour- we love it as an ice cream, a cake or even as a snack itself- grating some boiled fresh ube and mixing it with condensed milk :D You can use freshly-made ube as a snack or condiment (kinda like azuki) especially in halo-halo or to make ube ice cream/cake!!! Sata andagi reminds me of hushpuppies. It's typically served with fried fish at different seafood restaurants in the US
Saata andaagi are different than hush puppies. In old Okinawan, it means fried sugar and they're more like a donut hole than a hush puppy.
Looks so yummy ! Will have to someday and try those yummy cookies Cx and soba :3
There is also a Blue Seal ice cream at Ebisu Garden place for those in Tokyo who can't make it to Okinawa. Although I must say somehow it tastes better in Okinawa. :-)

Thought the Marines lived by a code of "no ragrets" lol.
I just started watching again after a recent illness, can you talk about some of the broths that the dishes you share are made in? I had to have slot of broth when I was sick.
Please do a food review on the tuna peanut butter salad in Okinawa. A recipe would also be much appreciated. Love your show.
Ohayo gozaimasu, konnichiwa and konbanwa I have been watching your channel and Satoshi San is very very sweet 🙏 I love your channel
I have seen Okinawa is the best and longest living people food so you have to eat if you like good health.
Awesome video
this is so useful! thank you satoshi!!
The tofu reminds me of flan.
thanks Shinichi...lovely vid!😀
No mention of Orion beer, which many Japanese like over Asahi and Kirin?
It’s the Budweiser of Japan, consumed because of advertising, not quality.
Orion is the best beer made in Japan I've tried so far. Kirin is the second best. Sapporo has a big, malty bottom end that is probably popular, but I personally don't like. Asahi tastes similar to Budweiser. Not bad, but not much flavor to speak of.
@@KJKP I think that's true of Asahi. But in my opinion, Orion has more flavor than most other Japanese beers.
Okinawan style okonomiyaki will blow you away. If you're a fan of the dish and you're on the islands, do not pass it up! Oh! Where's that cutie Satoshi today?
Mamasans taco cheese and rice! 🍚 Kinville! 😋
One of my biggest wishes is to visit Japan one day. German food seems so boring compared to your food and I wanna try your food so bad 😍
Do you have any videos about vegetarian food in Japan? You have a number of items in this video. : D it’s very helpful!
We also did one for vegetarians on convenience store food.
Been there. It's beautiful
Yes sea grapes!!! Had them in Tokyo!!! But caviar better!!!! ❤️
Can you please make a video on how to make rafute.
Wished I'd seen this 15 years ago. Spent 2 years living on Okinawa and only tried the taco rice and ice cream from your list. Can't believe you left out their versions of yakitori and yakisoba. Also you mentioned the fruit but left out pineapple, which they produce a lot of.
Salted cookie sounds so amazing!
I think I’ve had it all! Except for rafute. Do you remember the name of the place you had it at??!
We had Rafute at a random izakaya but this can be found almost anywhere.
taco rice = yummy!!
沖縄のぜんざい忘れてますよ!沖縄に行ったらこれも絶対食べてください。
If you live in Okinawa you should remember Cinnabon, yeah? Rip Cinnabon 2017
I've always wanted to try real champuru. Can't find anything like that in Obihiro -o-
You know champuru means stir fry in the okinawan language
caviar of the sea ? where do they think regular caviar comes from ??
I love Bitter melon!
I love dragon fruit. X)
"the caviar of the sea"
doesn't caviar already come from the sea?
ItsJayCross it comes from fish which in turn comes from the sea.
Well, Sturgeons are frequently freshwater or estuarine fish, rarely inhabiting open ocean, so not that much, actually.
Caviar comes from the Caspian Sea - but you could argue that it is the world's biggest lake.
I have to try umibudo some time if I get the chance. It looks so delicious..
EDIT:
Saw a store were you can order some her in Sweden. Let's see how fresh it seems.
If you guys got a job offer from NHK, would you take it?
That tofu looks bomb
Fruit and Lawrence!!!!! 🤣
10? Why not everything?
So true!
please stop you’re my type of person
Why are the sea grapes referred to as the caviar of the sea? Isn't a lot of caviar from the sea anyway? Or is most of it farmed now?
Nice
Sadly I can't have the Okinawa tofu cause of the peanut stuff in the tofu
Lard and butter makes everything better! Like bacon :D
You forgot もずく and purple sweet potatoes.

Is Okinawa not famous for sweet potatoe. Especially on the okinawaian diet there is a high amount of sweet potatoe on the list.
Is it true Saimin comes from Okinawa Soba?
+Joey Karate I wouldn’t be surprised if it was. The soup tastes very similar.
awamori sake
Is there any vegan food in Okinawa?
Probably but very difficult to find when it comes to local cuisine.
forgot ORION BEER! :)
