  • I'm back flying the Cirrus again this week after a few months. But what's that first flight back like, and how does a pilot's brain prepare you for it?

Noel, another good video. Even after 30 years flying I still take a deep breath before takeoff and remind myself to be careful. After not flying for a number of weeks I take two breaths and make sure I haven’t missed anything on the checklist. Humility in a pilot is a good characteristic. Good on you.

I’m so glad to hear that I’m not the only one who gets nervous in the lead up to a flight, especially after some time away.
I get deeply in my head before flying. Staring at ForeFlight, planning alternates, checking weather, reminding myself of things I can work on. It’s really wild.
But, like you said, once I get into the plane, it feels so natural again.
Just yesterday, after being unable to fly for almost 4 months, I got back into a PA-28-140 for my biennial flight review/rental checkout - and the flight was going to go into night, no less! - and man was I nervous! But it turned out great! Lovely smooth flight. And now I’m even night current! 😅
Great stuff as always! Thanks for sharing!!

When I used to have flying lessons, and I haven't ever even been solo, I was always nervous. I can imagine it's similar to that feeling when you first pass your driving test and go out on your own for the first few times. Although I'm not solo, I think a healthy amount of fear is good; I think the main reason for probably having a little more fear than usual is because you don't fly every single day, it's funny how the brain works.

1:13 Skydive Perris in Southern California(Perris Valley Airport L-65) has a Short SC-7 Skyvan 3A-100. I see it flying every weekend. Reg # N549WB .This is the same operator that was trying to get their DC-9 in the air after sitting, but haven’t heard anything about that in months.

Noel, nerves before a flight is better than over confidence, from my own experience it also encourages me to prepare thoroughly for the flight. As a PPL where I fly from a grass runway in the north west UK, every winter unfortunately means breaks of several months. For various reasons I have my first flight next week following a break of just under a year, so extra nerves as it is also a check flight. As you said it all comes back and the nerves so when you start operating the aircraft.

Rely on all your checklists!!! I was surprised you had never been on a Shorts since they were made in N. Ireland! Back in the 1980's, US Airways flew them out of DCA (where I lived) and been on them many times. The wings are so small n tiny and I was always surprised they got off the ground! There are very few flying these days. In 2017 there were 42 Short 360 in service: 17 with Air Cargo Carriers, 6 with TransAir, 4 with Skyway Enterprises, 3 with Air Flamenco, 2 with Benair, Deraya Air Taxi and Freedom Air (Guam), 1 with Ayit Aviation, Comeravia, Gryphon Airlines, International Trans Air Business, Malu Aviation and Nightexpress.[10] The Short 360 specifically proved very popular with the UK's regional airlines including the Isle of Man-based-Manx. This fed passengers into larger hubs in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland. PLEASE make a vlog finding one and riding on one! Cheers Noel!

Noel what an amazing day to enjoy flying
I supose it is the truth that if you not nervous prior to flying then you become complacent and that is when trouble of some sort usually appears
Being ex cabin crew I to used to feel alittte nervous prior to each flight.
It was'nt until my onboard check lists were complete and passengers begain boarding that I became relaxed into the job.
I think also it's the fear of the unknowen.
I love to witness your experiences I feel in a way apart of your flying journey
Another great vlog thank you Noel

I think there's a healthy balance that's needed between nervousness and overconfidence. Too far on either side of that isn't good. Lean too far into overconfidence and you risk dying. Lean too far into nervousness and you risk not living.

Noel, back in the early 1990s I flew as a F/A for a regional carrier in the United States that had a fleet of Dash 8s and SD-360s. What can I say about it? Noisy, dated, unpressurized and pax HATED it. We could never get above wx. But 'Sky Pig' was adored by the flight deck. Good times!

Good to see an SD-360 (aka ‘The Shed’), I started my career at Jersey European Airways down at Exeter and used to fly on the night mail run between EXT-BRS-LPL-EXT on the jump seat several nights per week, it’s an awesome plane, albeit noisy and early, it that adds to the charm! It has a tiny jump seat that slides out, just behind the Captain’s seat, not the most comfortable of seats it has to be said!
Nice to see you back in the Cirrus, I will be in Mesa for 6 weeks in January with our G650 on maintenance at KFFZ and will be doing some flying around the region, but especially to KSEZ, KGCN and the Winslow Meteor crater.
Keep up the good work on the videos on both channels!

Ooh careful with the clips on the oil filler cover - the covers have been known to crack where the clips hit if you don't cushion them with a finger. The SR20 is an absolutely lovely aircraft though - hope you're enjoying flying it again! 😁

Listening to your conversations with the tower for information upon takeoff and landings, I'm curious if you had trouble with the "lingo?" Being a non-pilot I'm amazed that you can understand each other. You speak so quickly with distortion from your radio. Keep flying high Noel, I really enjoy your adventures....Oh and welcome to America❤️👍🇺🇸

The nervousness is normal. I’m a CA at a popular airline and I’m on vacation. I’ll go through my procedures and flows a bit before I jump back in the deck to be 100%. Anyone who doesn’t do so is either better and smarter than myself, or full of it. I’m always listening for your voice but no dice yet.

Noel, the Shorts 360 is a great plane I hope you can get a ride.
Many (many) years ago I was flying to and from the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia doing property inspections.
At the time Hazelton Airline was flying this run in a Shorts 360.
On one occasion while returning to Sydney from Merimbula Airport to Sydney via Moruya Airport I took the opportunity to go to the open cockpit door while the passengers were loading at Moruya.
Had a great talk with the crew and the Captain asked me if I flew, I stated only on a flight simulator. He invited me to sit in the jump seat for the flight back to Sydney.
I was told that the Shorts 360 is known as the Irish Concord and Max Hazelton himself ferried the two planes to Australia (amongst other things).
Greatest time ever on a flight.

The Shorts 360 or sheds are brilliant. I wish they flew more of them. I don't think they make them anymore. I used to work for an airline that used them. Only a 36-seater plane. An unpressurised cabin, Formica cabin decals. Pilots used to enter the cockpit via the cabin, and a sliding formica door. It wouldn't get past aviation security these days. We used to get scared if the majority of passengers were male. The combined weight meant the Shed might tip, so we had to deny boarding to many. You really felt like it was flying. Boxy, but good. Very very slow flying, embarrassing landing at large airports and seeing large jets parked up. Flying caravans. RIP GO-BHD, GO-BLK the late Jack Walker of Jersey European Airways UK (prior to Flybe UK)

Thanks for the video, nervous Noel. I can compare your situation to driving a car with a manual transmission (I believe Americans call that a stick shift) for the first time in several years. Even when one is confident because they have driven one before, and drive an automatic transmission car daily, the first moments are a bit tense. That has happened to me and I believe to many other drivers. The first clutch release in 1st gear is always a little awkward but the feeling and confidence return by the time one has shifted into 3rd gear. For a car there are no checklists to review or handbooks to consult, it is purely muscle memory.
Nice landing and I look forward to watching more greasers in the Cirrus.
