    Not only did this story evoke mystery and horror, but it also provides a brief lesson in chemistry. This story also gives the reader a good idea of what rural life was like in America before The First World War.

    The descriptions of Mrs. Gardner's deterioration are some of the best and most disturbing instances of horror fiction I've ever read. When I'm introducing someone to Lovecraft, I always start with this story and The Haunter of the Dark.

    I reckon I have read and reread this at least 5 times when I read the three full omnibus of his works .
    This being my first audio book .
    And each time the chil and goosebumps physical reaction seems to incrementally increase.
    Only Brian Lumley ( The Necroscop novels and added work s that touch upon and extend the Cthulhu mythos.) can begin to approach the baroque master of 19th century horror .
    Lovecraft's craft is sublime genius .

      @@puglord6349 So is Wayne June the one that does the majority of the other ones? I think I might have them mixed up. The one that narrates CThulu, The Tomb, Under the Pyramids, and all the other great ones; is that June? Because that guy is my favorite.

    • @puglord6349
      @puglord6349 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@LigneBrisee Not sure who you mean that does the majority, most stories have been narrated by several different people over the years. Almost all of the ones with the picture of HP Lovecraft infront of a brick wall, are narrated by Conrad Feininger. I rarely listen to other ones, as I prefer the monotonous narration, with serious accents reserved for important characters and no music or forced drama. Old timey sound quality too, as they were all recorded on tape. Wayne June is a much more recent narrator, who did an excellent job in the Lovecraftian game: Darkest Dungeon. Should be easy to find June online as he is quite popular, I think he has his own YT channel too.

    • @erc3338
      @erc3338 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think they were referring to whoever read, for example, The Nameless City or Dagon, as they both sound recorded on cassette and both have a monotone voice.
