Saw him many times, but I enjoyed him best at small venues, like a night when he stopped playing, and asked the crowd for a joint, it obviously arrived! Was lit, and with a smiling nod of approval, he broke into 'Solid air'.... times like that will never be forgotten.. Top man.
My dad was lucky enough to go to two John martyn shows, back when he was young. He saw him in a venue in an old shipping warehouse in Bristol, and John martyn lit up a joint and passed it around the audience. I am proud to say that my dad shared a blunt with John martyn 😅😅😅. I brag about it fairly often ahah. Unfortunately John died when I was four and I never got to see him. He is my absolute favourite artist of all time, and my biggest inspiration. I’m pretty Gutted that he is gone. I really wish I could have seen him. No other music in the world makes me feel this much emotion…
He was 25 at the time and what a great album this is from. That era produced some wild talent. He still had his best years ahead of him. Pity this isn't included on the Live at the BBC dvd. I'd watch it all night!
probably the best song by the best singer/songwriter. i will forever miss john martyn he was amasing RIP big man if i cant get what bi want i'll get what i can! genius
Once bought John a triple vodka up on stage in Galway. Gonna miss not ever being able to see and feel your power up so close again John. Love You Man!!!!!!! Sean XXX
“Make No Mistake” is a real GEM of a song...well, just about EVERY song John wrote is a real gem! He had, without a doubt, FAR more talent as a musician and singer, not to mention BETTER songwriting skills, than 99.9% of the popular singers in the 70’s & 80’s that you heard all over the radio. John Martyn was a true INNOVATOR. The REST? Well, they were just POSERS! ‘Nuff said...
your right the man was gorgeous simply gorgeous, that look at 0.25..and to sound like that too..listening to him is like taking an arrow through the heart..
Pure. Hearing these OGWT sounds is wrenching. I loved JM -- saw him live 30+ years ago and still listen to Inside out and Solid Air on old old cassettes.... RIP
First time I saw him live was Glastonbury 1986 (Radio one live in concert CD was recorded there) and he was brilliant. Last time I saw him was on the sunshine boys tour with Danny Thompson. Once again he was brilliant.
Ditto to all the above, excellent upload. Dues due, if you like, to the amazing Danny Thompson (Pentangle) looking very young there on the double bass.
The last time I saw JM at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, he posed the question, "How do you know you've had a Deadhead as a visitor???? They're still there." Bless the weather for John Martyn. R.I.P. forever.
This is wonderful. Bit annoying that when the "John Martyn at the BBC" dvd came out, they were saying it was all his Whistle Test appearances, but this isn't on it, nor is "Outside In"... great to find it here though :)
That I love J. Martin, is an understatement. The epitome of what guitar /voice should sound like...when I was around 20, biy , did I make love on this vinyl!!! Boy, I mis JM.
I really dig this. it is a type of Fusion,as if a hippie folk singer somehow met Marvin Gaye. John Martyn seemed to have had the ability to draw on many different types of music and let himself be inspired by the best. A very talented artist indeed and sad that he's now departed.
@deepenough2die He had double pneumonia. I couldn't believe it when I heard. If I can't be a peaceful man, I will be who I can If I can't get everything I want, I'll just get what I can I was alright before I walked out the door I was alright inside But outside I had to look again, again, again... Beautiful.
Gladly. I'd recommend you check out Solid Air, Bless the Weather, Sunday's Child, On the Cobbles, Grace and Danger to name a few of my favourites. Start with Solid Air though, it is his most famous recording and there's a reason for it.
Blast from the past. Hey does anyone have his cover of "somewhere over the rainbow" almost as good as IZ's, in fact on par but different. If someone could post it... I'd be greatful. Cheers
Can anyone tell me why this man so split opinion. Apparently some people couldn't even bear hearing his name mentioned they hated him so much and others like the one and only Danny Thompson (I think playing upright bass here) obviously loved him in spite of his very temperamental nature. I'm genuinely curious to know why?
Arthur Gunn from Nepal did a cover of this song. Found out about John through his cover. Link is below if anyone fancies a listen. soundcloud.com/user-350893459/make-no-mistake-cover
@@Waggonerslad are you sure? I know MNM can and probably was usually DADGAD, but the fingering here doesn't seem to match. Have a feeling JM was using a different tuning from a previous song he was playing and therefore had another way of playing this one, as he so often did.
@@Wasimple He did like to change things up a bit right enough but I'm pretty certain it's in DADGAD here. Just watched his fingering again and it looks exactly as I (try to) play it in DADGAD.
@@Waggonerslad Cheers for the reply. Man, I've been knocking around with DADGAD and typically my hand is somewhere around the fifth fret for much of it, so since seeing JM playing it here I've been trying to work out how I can be playing nearer the headstock (for the verses, I mean). Got any tips you wouldn't mind sharing?
The cause of his death was a double pneumonia. I also heard it only now. A great musician. I loved his music, his kind to play and his singing and not least his compositions. I´ve also a lot of memories with this music ...
@happyhour2624 I think you'll find a lot of people are in agreement with you. Have a look at how many views it's had. I suspect it may well have influenced my favourite guitarist; Vini Reilly of The Durutti Column non-fame! Martyn and Reilly two of the most criminally underrated guitarists and song writers of all. unfortunately for poor Vini, the man just can't sing!
This is what musicians should aspire to be. This is what we should aspire to create. Pure, unfiltered emotion and beauty.
can't understand a word ... oh well. guitar is sweet.
@@elle39 He deliberately slurred his words which allowed for vocal expression; the voice being an instrument.
John, rare, unique, gone before too soon, poet, excessive, creative. Miss you John.

Had the pleasure of hearing him play in his house several times between 2006 and 2009. R.I.P. Lovable rambunctious bastard
Beautiful. I sang harmonies with John on his Well Kept Secret album in 1982. A big talent gone too soon.
God, i love this song! John Martyn is such a performer! I saw him live in Liverpool on his "final" tour, amazing musician!
I'm listening to this a hundred times a day. I wish the sound quality was better. Would really appreciate a better rip of this!! John is worth it!
A masterpiece. His genius is truly timeless.

BEAUTIFUL.
one of my favourite John martyn songs ever.
RIP
john martyn's music gives the most souly blues jazzy folky feeling you can hope to experience
This is from John Martyn's second Whistle Test appearance in 1973, on Tuesday October 16th. The second number he played was 'Outside In'.
god bless you john for giving us this music

It's not a song for me, but it is truly piece of art - I fell real "LOVE" reading between the lines.
saw John and Danny at Glasgow and it blew my mind....about 2001
Fantastic. So many great memories.

Was there ever a more beautiful sound than John's guitar and voice and Danny's Victoria?
Classic John Martyn slurred vocals, exquisite acoustic guitar with the main man Danny Thompson on bass. Nice one.

how did he die? i didn't know and i am quite sad.

@AcousticMinja Welcome to a very privileged group!
I like his playing but when he sings it's a bit like he's had a few ciders and forgotten the words. 😂
no john martyn
