Dirt Bike Magazine tests the 2024 KTM 125SX 2 Stroke at Cahuilla Creek Motocross Park. The 2024 KTM 125SX is the most technologically advanced 125cc motocross machine that KTM has ever produced with an electric starter, two optional pre-programmed maps that can be changed on the fly, electronic power valve, electric starter and a throttle-body fuel-injection system. Combined with all the other features like Brembo braking components, WP suspension, a tool-less-access airbox and hydraulic clutch, this has got to be the best 125cc made, right?
Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet, because with technological advancements almost always comes some bugs that need to be worked out. Compared to the previous generation, the 2024 KTM 125SX only retains the use of the WP fork assembly, Brembo braking hardware, wheel fitment, Magura hydraulic clutch actuator and a few other components.
If you are a serious racer in the intermediate or pro division, the 2024 KTM 125SX might not be the smart first choice for a couple of reasons. But, for the average 125cc pilot, this bike is easier to keep in the meat of the power, has an electric starter, the guessing game of jetting is eliminated by fuel injection, mapping options are on the fly, has great brakes and an overall handling package that fits a wide variety of riding skill levels. You just have to be honest with yourself about what you are looking for.

I bought a 2024 KTM 125 sx a few weeks ago and I assure you it hits hard! It hits harder than my 2022 KTM 150 sx with a fresh top end! The 125 hits hard then keeps pulling giving it the illusion of a “Linear” powerband mentioned. In my experience ,it doesn’t “sign off at the top” as also mentioned! Any real 2 stroke guy will figure this bike out within minutes…just feather the clutch and hold on tight!!!

Two strokes are meant to be extremely simple powerhouse engines. A piston slapping around in a jug with a couple holes to let air in and out while eating up a high volume of oil & gas. Once you start “modernizing” the design and trying to make it more efficient by giving it computer controlled fueling and throttle control etc. you might as well put a cam in it and make it a 4 stroke.

@@mbproductions2292 I’m sure if I were to spend more time on an EFI oil burner I could learn to use its smooth powerband and perhaps be faster in certain situations. I also admittedly only have a very small sample group of one single EFI 2 stroke that I’ve ridden so far, that being a GasGas 125. It was a nice bike, don’t get me wrong. But I still have an old 2005 KX 125 in my stable so we decided to race around a bit and the old carb’d Kawi murdered the GasGas out of the hole and coming out of corners. To be fair the GasGas was 100% factory stock and my KX has a V Force Reed valve, an FMF Fatty pipe w/ Powercore 2 Shorty silencer and Uni filter. Both bikes were running fuel from the same can; 100 octane Sunoco GT mixed 32:1 with Klotz oil. The GasGas only had maybe 10 hours on it and my KX probably has twice that since its last rebuild.

I don't like the idea of not having a kick start but I am interested with the fuel injector.. I'm an average rider that will probably never see a track and really love the classic too stroke.. Being much older and just wanting a good bike to ride. This might be the best of both worlds... a 2stroke that rides a little easier...

I have the 2023 TC125 Heritage, I was originally and supposedly going to get the 300tx 😂. I’m glad I didn’t, it would’ve been WAY to much bike for me to handle i also feel a 250f would be way to heavy for me coming off from a KX100.
My Skill is around intermediate and I’m pretty light weight. The bike is just perfect for me for its lowered seat height, less vibration, and flickable.
No im no pro, not even just a weekend warrior it’s by chance when I get to ride really.
I really do like the TBI bikes but not the spark plug issues i had at first…
If you have the TBIs and fouled a spark plug get a KTM 85 plug, drain the dealers mix, or put it to white map.
I’m hoping the 24’s ironed out those issues.
If you want an easier time with two strokes this bike is great especially not having to deal with jetting, or kickstarting (I wish we had an option for it however) just keep in mind of charging it that’s all.

Eeh I stick with carburetor .. the hard hitting 2 stroke power is actually largely do to mediocre needle selection by manufacturers. Wich results in lean spots followed by proper fuel air. Or rich spots followed by lean or various combinations of inconsistencies in the rpm range vs fuel air ratio. Manufacturers Focused seemed to be in proper full throttle Jetting and off idle as they are typically mx race bikes. Unless the motor is just ported in a manner resulting in a very peaky rpm range. Wich isn't uncommon for a after market port job targeted at mx and peak hp. But bike can also be ported to have smoother wider power delivery. Or have squish band and port hight altered to shift rpm range. Or pipe selection as well.
Jets r us is a good place to purchase needles or j.d jetting does a good job of selecting a decent needle for most applications.
No the power valve is not what gives them their hit. Many w strokes have no power valve.. and the hit hard. Cr500 never had one... and basically any pre 90s 80cc or smaller never had one. Power valve kinda gives you 2 different power bands by altering exhaust port hight or compression. Allowing manufacturers to port the bikes to have better rideabillity throughout rpm range.

I don't get it. How is changing from carb to EFI making the bike lose horsepower? My understanding was that EFI would not sacrifice horsepower, only make the power curve and delivery more useable. I understand that power delivery is as important or more important than peak power. Hard hitting power is useless if you're on the clutch as much as you're on the throttle. But I thought that peak horsepower remained the same, only the curve and delivery was changed. I hope this just a gremlin that can be tuned out with ECU and mapping adjustments.

Why do you test all the same bikes over and over again?? There are other bike on the market like TM racing, Kove, Beta . Ktm bike are now boring they change the color and say it’s a new model and now they’re going to be making in China. I won’t buy any KTM bikes because of that! They’re are selling out to the Chinese and Indian because they’re afraid to make premium bikes like Ducati
